I'm glad someone brought this up. I will say if Auston wanted Canadian endorsements, he'd get those endorsements. He's a different cat and fans need to recognize this. American stars are much different from Europeans in that they aren't just happy to be in the NHL playing for any team. A lot of them want to be in the US. Auston strikes me as the type who likes the limelight but not the fervor that comes along with playing in a Canadian NHL market.

Hope I'm wrong, but I've said it before, there are a lot of tea leaves to be read here that point to a departure earlier than most of us would want. And personally as a person who has lived in warm weather climates, including Los Angeles for several years, I could see why an Arizona kid might want to give it a go during his prime and onward years.

Just an opinion folks. Not hoping for it, just calling it as I see it.

ps. And they should have made him captain when it was up for grabs. Such an idiotic short sighted move that was.
At the same time, I believe he wants to play in a market that truly cares and where he has the potential to become a true icon/star, and it just isn't the same opportunity with the LA Kings. His thinking may be that spending his career (or the bulk of it) in Toronto and potentially winning a Cup with a bunch more personal trophies will be a lot more meaningful than going to LA or somewhere else in the US.

Matthews loves Toronto and was willing to sign for 8 years. I can see Tavares passing over the C in a few years to him.

Anyone know what type of surgery was done, the likelyhood of success, and the risks involved with it?

With his shot being a key part of his game, this surgery is absolutely crucial

if showing your underware (from a distance) is harassment, shouldnt the thousands of idiots that wear their pants 1/2 way down their butts be charged on the daily?
I dont condone the action in any way, it is very disrespectful and offensive.
the part that i think is far more serious, is that they tried to open her car door (one of the group) 'to see what she would do' and that could make anyone fear for their life thinking it was a car-jacking attempt, or potentially something worse!
but, it's not like he punched a cabbie over a 0.20 cent dispute. ...though these days, you get fired if you tweeted something mean/offensive/not PC 10 years ago.

I don't think we should be critical of certain groups of people's choice of expression through fashion. I would recommend listening to those groups to better understand their culture vs calling them idiots or comparing their attire to what a young, drunk, entitled athlete did to harass a female trying to do a job.

The attempted breaking into the car was another bad decision by this guy who was supposed to be captain material. Any woman in that situation would be fearful for her life. I wouldn't for a second try to diminish her experience as I've never been a woman in a car at night being approached by a drunk man trying to get into my car who has just exposed his underwear to me. It's impossible to walk in those shoes, so I will just assume it was a scary experience and say that it demonstrates how ill prepared Matthews is to lead anything.

Hopefully he has paid restitution to the female and grown up in the process.

Speaking of injuries. Freddy Andersen was no where around for Denmarks Olympics qualifying yesterday in Europe. He’s not taking any chances i suppose.

I noticed that as well (or Carolina doesn't want him to take any chances).

I've trashed Freddy my fair share but he could have been well below 100% at some points of the season, he's still dealing with lingering effects from the sounds of it.

Then why did he wait 2 months after the season ended to decide it was hurt and needed surgery ? Being a fanboy seldom makes sense either but here we are , Look at the list of guys that were hurt in the playoffs and almost to a man they were in the hospital getting repaired within days of their last game so they could maximize their recovery before next season .

Yes I realize that but the point wasn't the name of the guy as much as the situation , seems pretty fishy he waits 2 months to realize he is hurt bad enough to need surgery . Insert fanboy excuse here.............

Injured it during offseason training.

I really hope this is the case. I do see this same glimmer but I wholeheartedly believe the only way that this scenario plays out is if Leafs Management gets their stuff together and does what it takes to build a sustainable winning team. Nobody wants to play here when the fans turn on them. We're standing on the doorstep of someone getting Larry Murphy'd and once that door opens, we all know things get real ugly after that.

that wasnt him, but, he needs a better quality of friends it seems

He was still there and I'm sure did nothing to stop the act. It's the combination of events that makes him look bad. Regardless of who did what specifically. He should have been the voice of reason. Instead he traumatized a woman in the middle of the night. Not a good look. Not someone you want to them trot out as the next captain of a storied brand like the Leafs.

I dont understand why you wait two or three months after the season ended to get surgery that now takes you to training camp.what happens if there is a set back of some sort and he needs another month to get better.
He should have had the operation as soon as the season end need so he would be 100 per cent sure of starting the season on time

Management did get their stuff together.
Matthews scoring 2 goals in a 7 game series would have been the difference to advance. maybe Matthews is directly responsible for the team not advancing more than management. is 2 goals too much to ask for?
Just Saying...

Surgery is only the first option when it's the only option.
Rest and Rehab always come first.

You don't know that. None of us do. No point speculating about what he did or didn't do.

His groin is held together with duct tape and prayers. I don't think anyone's going to see Freddy at 100% again, he's going to get managed workloads to keep him just good enough to play 1B.

He had 35 shots in 7 games, and just went for wrist surgery. To endure that sort of pain and get that many shots off is proof that he did indeed show up.....
I don't buy this because he was visibly different the first 3 games vis a vis the last four. Like his play literally just fell off. If he was feeling so poorly initally, surely those 3 games couldn't have contributed to his wrist being thaat messed up for the next four games. And lets say it did, how does that impact his legs? Cus he was lethargic as heck.

I mean he led the league in goals with the wrist bothering him most of the year. I highly doubt anything they could have done would make his shot worse.

Because maybe, just maybe.....he aggravated the injury further during the series? Injuries are injuries. They affect play. But he got 35 shots off in 7 games. That's hard to do that no matter how good you are.

I have no clue why people are trying to make it look like he didn't care. That is the ultimate in stupidity. Not saying you in particular are saying that he didn't care, but the ones who do are indeed stupid.

I understand the aggravated part. But I just can't understand how he started skating less. There were times where he was downright invisible. I think he was good and a lot of it was price. But that wasn't a 11m performance at all and I don't think that its harsh to be criticial of his play.

I don’t wanna hear any excuses from this guy now that he’s had his surgery. When the playoffs roll around, he better be firing pucks on all cylinders. If he takes a light slash and says he couldn’t shoot anymore he can f*** off. Bergeron is a guy he should look up to. Injuries throughout his career but clutch and a leader every time he’s in the lineup.

no more excuses period.

So it is 1 month since ...

Question is how long after the 6 weeks will he be ready?
Readiness is almost always pushed back due to cardio. He’ll be skating so it shouldn’t take long after, unless he’s lost a considerable amount of muscle mass.

Guessing there's no chance. I would bank on him missing about 10 games and taking a couple of months to be even close to himself. I have no idea what procedure he had but there will be a lot of confidence issues after someone's wrist is opened up and played around with. And it's not like he has some meat-and-potatoes wrist like me, he's an elite athlete with a honed set of skills that depend on "feel" as much as muscle memory.

The good news is he showed last season he has a lot of tools to compensate.
