Some more fun facts about Matthews "awful" playoffs the last two years.

While his 11 points in 12 games the last 2 years are certainly a little under what he should have been at (hot goaltending and an injured wrist this past playoff just surgically repaired played a part here too of course), here is how he ranked 5v5 among the 48 centers to play at least 200 5v5 minutes the last two playoffs:

TOI/game: 1st out of 48
Fewest Expected Goals Against/60: 1st out of 48
Fewest Goals Against/60: 1st out of 48
Fewest High Danger Chances allowed/60: 1st out of 48
Most Takeaways/60: 1st out of 48
Blocked Shots/60: 4th out of 48
Fewest Giveaways/60: 1st out of 48
Shots/60: 1st out of 48
Individual Expected Goals/60: 1st out of 48
Individual Scoring Chances/60: 2nd out of 48

Biggest standouts to me are:

Having the highest TOI and leading almost every category there. Any way we could give this guy even more minutes?
The most takeaways AND the fewest giveaways? Thats just insane. Pure two-way dominance.

Yet with all those awesome stats he didn’t manage to score a goal, when we needed him most.
For almost 12 million he needs to be a “big moment player”…….score in OT instead of the opposition.
It’s great to simply rack up points but that’s only personal achievements if it doesn’t help the team win

This is called cognitive dissonance. The inability to believe the facts put forth in the face of a feeling.

How about the wrist that he had surgery on too?

Shittiest take ever.

Lol. The “facts” as you call them are totally without context.
You cannot dispute that he did not contribute to the Leafs moving forward in the last 2 years.
If you stick at it long enough you will eventually learn the the game is played on the ice, not the stats book.
Don’t forget the old saying
Figures can lie and liars can figure

He wouldn’t carry the puck in the last few games of the playoffs, let alone shoot.
His wrist was injured.

Yea, he was snakebit with all those posts and ran into hot goaltending but he was so dominant, he still scored goals at a higher rate than Barkov, Couturier and Seguin the last two playoffs and put up better points production than Bergeron, Stone, Crosby, Ovi and Kuznetsov to go along with being arguably the best defensive forward in the playoffs.

Was dragging dead weight at the same time too. Imagine if Marner was not awful and Hyman was able to play like he normally did.

I don't see why people think he was invisible unless they only notice someone if they score or lay out a big hit. He did pretty much everything except score... which is obviously important but if this is him having a bad series, imagine what happens when he is scoring at his normal rate?

Yeah, gonna say lost cause replying there.

He hit several posts and had some chances robbed. Had absolutely nothing to do with effort, or disappearing.

Yeah, but in reality, we haven't won a playoff round and can't afford new depth players to replace the depth players we are losing because we can't afford to keep them.

Would it be a good idea, to have someone on Matthews wing to take the face offs initially for a couple of weeks.

We could, but we can also get along without him until his wrist is 100%.

If he isn't able to easily take faceoffs, I'd rather him be on the sideline. We know when he needs to be good for and it isn't the opening week of the regular season.

His game sort of deteriorated after Game 3 or 4, coinciding with the Leaf meltdown. Can't underestimate the way Shea Weber, Ben Chiarot and friends play to injure.

I hated seeing them hack him over and over. Would have loved to see a face puncher absolutely destroy them, knock them the f*** out.
