Gotta wonder if this is a Bobby Ryan situation ? He broke a couple of teeth playing pickup and couldn't afford to fix them so he went into camp and knocked them out while drunk and then the next day pretended to get hit with a puck in practice , dropped the teeth on the ice and spit a bunch of blood so the team had to pay for his dental work , Mathews could have done something stupid and waited until pre-camp workouts started to make the team cover the surgery . " I don't know son it looks like a masturbatory accident to me".
Wrong player.

Terry Ryan.

Surgery delay is likely due to personal/vacation/golf. Its done just in time to recover at start of training camp. No coincidence. A red flag if I ever saw one.

Yes its almost like they had a plan where if rest and rehab didn't heal it by a certain date, they would get the surgery to make sure he was ready for the start of the season. A typical offseason recovery plan if I ever saw one.

Is there any proof he played golf? This seems like a very silly take on it all.

I don’t know why this is such a big deal that he waited. It’s normal to wait and see if over time something heals. It didn’t unfortunately but he acted fast enough to get surgery so he’s ready for training camp.

What's the red flag?

Matthews wasn't the only one deciding when they should get the surgery - he's in contact with the Leafs medical team on a regular basis.

Physical therapy and rehab always comes first if it might need surgery. Physical therapy and rehab didn’t help so the surgery was required in time for him to play the season, it’s really not that uncommon. If surgery was for sure required it would’ve been done right after the season finished imho

its not like Matthews played 1/2 the season with his wrist injury and missed a bunch of games because of it, right?
trying to be 'funny' seldom works...

This was Terry Ryan not Bobby Ryan. Big difference in type of player and contracts....

WHY WAIT 2 MONTHS? lol.

According to the link I posted "Matthews encountered discomfort upon increasing his on-ice training earlier this week. After consultations with specialists and Maple Leafs medical staff, surgery was the recommended course of action. His recovery will be a minimum of six weeks."

Reading is hard.
