Per Friedman on 32 Thoughts

With the KHL potentially hitting at least some form of financial crisis and the quality of life in Russia slowly descending because of the sanctions, no wonder the Rangers seemed like a good deal after all.

And I do hope for him to succeed, there's a very clear opening in the top-9.

I'm not sure I can remember a player such as Strome in the current scenario he's in. One of the longest tenured players, same age as most of core, top 6 player, loves being a Ranger, leader on the team and yet the vast overwhelming majority of the fanbase (myself included) has less than zero interest in bringing him back even on a team friendly deal.
I think he's just not that versatile of a guy. That's what it comes down to. That, and he and Panarin disappeared 5v5 for most of the season.

The more I think about it the more we need a guy like Motte. How many guys do we have with the speed and desire to take the body like him??? Kreider doesn’t really do it anymore so I would say we don’t have anyone. Sucks that we gave Nemeth more than one year that could have easily been the money to easily re up Motte.

We can go 10% over the cap in the summer as long as we’re compliant after the final preseason cuts. Sign Motte, worry about unloading Nemeth later, attach a pick if you have to in order to get it done.

Not exactly the same especially in terms of age and tenure but Michael Nylander was a similar player in a similar situation for us.

Pure offensive player with no interest in defense who found new life by meshing well with one particular big impact forward (Jagr).

He walked, we added Drury and Gomez which seemed to be a big upgrade but ended up not being such an upgrade.

Only way where its okay to sign Strome is if you get him on a 1 year deal and you commit to separating him and Panarin. They've both played better away from one another for a while.

Who knows, maybe he gets surgery and it will be significant enough where it bonks up his market and he bets on himself.

Yeah sure I’ll believe it when I see it. I don’t even see either of them playing pp1. Fkin joke

What does PP1 have to do with being a top 6 player?

Other than Strome, who would they replace on PP1? I think Laf replaces Strome on PP1 and Kakko slides into Laf's spot on PP2.

Different situation, to me. That group was in desperate need to replace Nylander with thought-to-be upgrades in talent and grit. This group has a deeper talent farm and players like Blais and Kravtsov returning.

Why do you guys do this to yourselves?
Never hurts to call. San Jose called about Samsinov and ended up getting Joe Thornton. Espo had an agreed upon player trade for Gretz but Gulf and Western said no to the 15 million. We did trade for Messier. We also had a trade for Lindros in place that Quebec agreed to but the arbitrator ruled against us. Slats agreed to a trade for Stamkos but Tampa's new owners overruled it. Make the calls. Long Distance is free. :)

Just don't even entertain this, or Drury would be a fool. Strome is not the answer to success. The team cannot be deferential to Panarin anymore.

And Strome is not taking a 1-year deal.

If Laf can get a little faster still, I could see him eventually be an almost Marchand type of player. I could live with that - Prime Marchand is a beast and a good pest to have on your team.

I can see that, though he's a lot thicker than Marchand. I can see him becoming a Shannahan-like player. I think that's a better comp than Marchand.

He saw his Rubles turn into the value of Pesos, so it makes sense to try and lock in 875K American, even with NYC taxes.

Also with the 1 way deal, he'd get 875k playing for Hartford. Not saying he'd clear waivers, but if he did, he isn't making peanuts. His minors salary was 70K. I'd be pissed too if I knew I could make at least 10x's that much back home, probably even more likely 15-20x's the amount of money.

It's really why the European players need to stay put until they are ready. Financially and developmentally, they need to be closer to home. These are traditionally kids that don't have much. Imagine if Panarin was drafted, came over to the US when he was 20-21 and was sent to the minors to make what probably would have been 50K on a deal. He'd leave too cause he knows there is a chance at millions if he goes and plays in the KHL for a year.

Kaprizov did it too, just that he waited and waited until he knew he'd get a 1 year ELC and get paid right away. We just have to hope Kravtsov can make a big impact, but not one that puts him past a price point we can afford.

Yea, the powerplay wasn't exactly the issue this year. For that to be the thing you're pissed about given everything else the team needs to work on is just dumb penis-waving stat-stuff about how many points our top drafts have.

The powerplay was absolutely lethal this year and won us dozens of games. Putting Laf or Kakko on it this year wouldn't have magically resulted in a stanley cup.

Getting a cup from this squad is the goal now. No seeing how many stats the kids can get.

Sounds like it worked out with Krav.

That's why you don't have to give in a trade demand by a jilted young player.

Clean slate next season. Hope he can be a difference maker
I mean, we'll see right? The agent and Drury did their part. Now it's on him.

He's coming to NA early this summer to workout here. A running issue NYR had with him was his conditioning, that shouldn't be a problem this time. They'll have eyes on him.

Actually there was brief period where the Ruble fell against the dollar, and then it became more valuable than it was previously short after. Neverthless, the Russian economy is screwed, so yes it was in his best interest to get out of there.

Given the limited cap space the kids are going to be really important next year. I’m really intrigued by Kravstov coming back.
In order to bring back Vatrano, Motte and Copp, the contracts have to be crazy team friendly.

Vatrano - $2.25 cap hit (Pay cut, so not likely, but you'll never know if you don't ask.)
Copp - $4.5 cap hit (Not a pay cut, but man is that asking for a discount. Again, see above)
Motte - $1.5 (Same as Copp)

However, if the guys buy in, this team would be lethal for a long time. Reaves and buyouts off the books after next season as well as another million increase in Cap can sign Miller long term. I am an advocate of moving Panarin at that time and then signing Laf and Chytil, if he proves to be what we need at center.

Kreider-Z-Vatrano
Laf-Chytil-Kakko
Panarin-Copp-Kravtsov
Motte-Goodrow-Blais
Reaves
Panarin might be good enough to play 3rd line for Arizona maybe........but the Rangers ?

I am seeing big number thrown around for Motte. His current contract is for $1,225,000 per year. Before that he was league minimum. I don't think he would pass on a 3 or 4 year contract @ $1.5 million per year. If he does I would let him walk. I would love to sign him but we have a limited amount of money that can be spent.

We need to dump Nemeth and his salary one way or the other. Love Reavo but we might not be able to keep him. His age was starting to show. If we can free up the salaries from those two it would go a long way in signing 2 of Copp and Motte and Vatrano.

If no one currently with Hartford can grab 3rd pair LD then resign Braun for a year at league minimum.
