This is not the Kappo player thread but " future of the franchise" is highly doubtful. He's looked like a middling NHL player who can't seem to score and is slow and stick handles without a purpose all the time. His best attribute is he can retrieve the puck well on the forecheck but he's not shown anything near a skill set that would elevate him above " a nice piece." Just because he was drafted 2nd overall does not mean he's owed anything. A nice piece seems right- future of the franchise, a HUGE stretch at this point.
I used the term potential for a reason. I think Kakko has the talent to be a gamebreaker, but it needs to be cultivated. All the more reason for the club to handle him with special gloves.

He's also 21 years old. Some of us would like to see them get playing time in big situations over plugs like Rooney and Hunt.

He's a 21 year old basically third year player. He's done almost for this organization-- Gallant does not "owe" him an explanation.

The explanation probably would have been, " we are making a change here Kappo. Nothing against you but we need to shake things up." Do you honestly think coaches explain every single decision they make to the players in great details?
I mean that would have been perfect if he actually said something like that to Kakko, but he didn't talk to Kakko at all. That is the issue. Way to make your 2nd overall pick feel completely unimportant, to the point the coach doesn't even think it's worth trying to help you to improve.

Look, Kreider is who he is. Now, he had an unforeseen 52-goal season, so maybe it's not out of the realm of possibility he can further evolve again. 52-goal Kreider was someone who played within himself, and the optics were he floated around lazily, but that's just the way he thinks he needs to play to be successful. He was an opportunisitic goal scorer. Once the postseason began, all of us were expecting him to turn into a madman and run around and crush people and stuff. He's so strong, he's afraid of himself getting penalized for hockey plays. He never played a strong cycle game as far as I can remember, but maybe this is included in the next iteration of Kreider, who I remind is not going anywhere for a long time.
Put Kreider with Chytil and Kakko and he'll learn how to cycle.

Point is he doesn't have the pedigree nor the accolades that would warrant such behavior.
Sure he does.

One of the better coaches in the league. Has won and been nominated for the Jack Adam's separated by 4 seasons

You don't do that by being a medicore head coach.

Additionally, any answer will be ok with some folks, not ok with others thus opening himself to a never ending stream of questions.

He, I'm sure, answered Chris Drury's questions which is good enough for me.

By the way, the sicko fan who sucker-punched the Bolts fan is facing six criminal charges for assault, disorderly conduct and harassment. And he's banned from MSG for life. He'll be arraigned on 6/29.

Oh.

And you were great on The Sopranos.
Keep telling yourself Panarin was good in the playoffs with that stupid colored chart. The reality is he and his entire line were dog shit in the playoffs. The fact is one of the highest paid players in the league was allergic to the dirty areas in the playoffs and constantly threw lazy blind passes to nobody because he was afraid to get hit to make a play. But don’t worry, he’ll probably score 80-90 points next year too, with a lot on the power play, and be a non factor in the playoffs again next year.

Respectfully….Let’s remember these kids lost a year to covid in development. Let pump the brakes a little..

Yea that probably would have been better. Now would that have been so hard? A whole 10 second conversation? He doesn’t owe him that? This is suppose to be a professional team, not little johnny not getting a shift at the grocery store on the weekend.

So we're really never going to hear about some of these injuries huh? So Panarin wasn't playing hurt? Yikes...

Maybe another way to look at it is what we do know and what we pretty much suspect strongly. Strome talked about a both sides pelvic injury and against Tampa he sat out one game and really struggled in the last few games. Copp was probably injured late in the season and though not nearly as hurt as Strome was most likely pretty banged up as well.

Both of them were Panarin's line mates for the most part and Strome IMO was about as useless as it gets at the end. I don't think it's a stretch that when both your line mates are playing hurt and one of them is pretty badly hurt it's going to effect your play too.

Should Strome have played that last game? Not really. I didn't understand Kakko being scratched either but at this point it is what it is. Apart from Chytil the Rangers really didn't have much option for a 2C though so I don't think the somewhat strange decision by Gallant really would have changed the outcome even though we managed to keep the game close and anyway Filip and Artemi have never had a whole lot of chemistry. Tampa did have most of the best chances and most of the momentum throughout.

and there's been limited practice time/ice time.

You will not get better by playing 10 minutes a game.

I'm hoping ALL the kids are fully dedicated this offseason after a small break/vacation.

You’re right this is a professional team. Which is why gallant doesn’t have to baby Kakko. And also why Kakko didn’t take it personally.

Absolutely! That’s why I added in the “basically” ahead of third year. I’m not even old myself but I just agree with the old school mindset. Coaches coach, players play, players play when coaches want them to.

Keep it simple and keep the players focused on their games- not making decisions.

Whats "its a professional team" even supposed to mean? That because they get paid they're supposed to immediately understand why their being sat?
Im going to assume Kakko was straight forward with his comments yesterday and said that he's going to use it to get better, but a quick 20 second conversation is the minimum that should've happened. We had inklings of it as early as 3pm, that kakko didnt know until warmups is shitty.

A simple "hey we need more forechecking on the 3rd line and thats gonna move goody up there. We're gonna put hunt in on the 4th because he can kill penalties and your game isnt suited for the 4th line"
No one is asking gallant to give more than a quick message to a kid, but please remember he is a kid. He can barely legally drink in the states, and while he's a professional athlete, almost every high level coach has basically said coaching is far less X's and O's and far more managing expectations with personalities, and making sure everyone understands their roles.

Im sure all of the people defending gallant right now want to go back to Mike Kennan as coach. A guy who ran the locker room by fiat. Those coaches don't exist anymore.
