"WE would be pretty disappointed if they are not" doesn't signal to you that he's talking about his team? Why would he want Laf and Kakko to be top-6 guys elsewhere?
Not saying elsewhere.........saying it was open ended as to when.

Do you honestly think Kakko has no idea why he was scratched? I mean, he was demoted to the 4th line a few times this playoffs, what was that about? Coaches just don't all of a sudden pull a move like this, it usually happens after numerous requests from to coach to play a certain way and the player not doing that. If you think Gallant is gonna come out and bury the kid you are sorely mistaken. What was he going to say? " I told him since the start of playoffs i wanted him quicker on pucks and to shoot more and he never listened "? He's not doing that, he took the high road and from Kakko's comments today the message seems to have been received. This is absolutely going to help this kids career, and everyone talking about development and dismissing this as something mean spirited hasn't a clue about actually developing players. This was a huge wake up call for Kakko.
Great, we'll see the wake up call happen while he's playing on another team. Just what we wanted, right?

After Game 1 Kakko did not have a good Tampa series, unlike the rest of his playoffs where he should have had about 4 more points but was snakebitten/cheated.

But a lot of guys had poor Tampa series’s.

Kakko was still a better option than Rooney, Hunt or unhealthy Strome. Hell he may have been better than healthy Strome.
Gallant needed somebody that could take face offs in case Strome couldn't finish. Kakko was 1 and 6 in faceoffs in the regular season. I'm sure there were other reasons for the move including Kakko playing very soft the previous 4 games.

Rooney isn't that guy either.

The right call would have been to shift Copp over and just run with Zibanejad-Copp-Chytil for most of the game and spot Goodrow-Motte in with a non Rooney forward.

There is no excuse to play Rooney.

Chytil & Lafreniere got the message to play more fast and physical in the playoffs. Kakko really didn’t despite brief flashes. I honestly see it as a motivational thing with KK (who probably does need a kick in the ass), it was just kind of insane for Gallant to choose that situation. Hopefully it makes Kakko a better player.

Ahuh. And Hunt?

Let us be real about this season.. it was great for development of our younger players and we made the the playoff..
BUT
It was almost completely on the back of Shesty and he covered for our bad team defense a lot..
We where a bounce away from getting knock out of round one or round 2.
We cannot lock up and vets for more than 2 yrs tops.. other we screw ourself signing our 1st rounds picks..

I mean it’s their right to keep their health private. Not sure why we’re entitled to know about it. If they want to share it they will.

Strome retires and joins NYR as Panarin's full time travelling shrink?

If we re-sign Strome just so Panarin has someone to lament the inevitable terminus of life in an ever-expanding universe, the impermanence of humanity and the pointlessness of struggling to find meaning therein and the insane frustration of having your allotted years fall in this blighted moment of strife and international incompetence… I can think of cheaper solutions than a 6M linemate.

If we've learned anything this year, it's to not believe what Gallant says.

I wouldn't go putting much stock in his "100% we expect them to be in the top 6 next season" comment, he just wanted to get outta there and drive 300MPH back to PEI.

This is a f*** up in any job. If you're doing that, you tell him before the game. If Strome can go, you're out. If Strome cannot go, you're in. Simple, easy to understand.

He's a 21 year old basically third year player. He's done almost for this organization-- Gallant does not "owe" him an explanation.

The explanation probably would have been, " we are making a change here Kappo. Nothing against you but we need to shake things up." Do you honestly think coaches explain every single decision they make to the players in great details?

He’s also the potential future of the franchise. The Rangers apparently don’t handle Laf or Kakko with special gloves. Given the club’s poor track record developing elite talent, I question that approach. Treat these guys like third line grinders, don’t be surprised if that’s what they develop into.

This is not the Kappo player thread but " future of the franchise" is highly doubtful. He's looked like a middling NHL player who can't seem to score and is slow and stick handles without a purpose all the time. His best attribute is he can retrieve the puck well on the forecheck but he's not shown anything near a skill set that would elevate him above " a nice piece." Just because he was drafted 2nd overall does not mean he's owed anything. A nice piece seems right- future of the franchise, a HUGE stretch at this point.
