Dion seems a lot more chipper this year.

Glad someone posted this. I agree - he seems BIGTIME more "chipper" as you put it.

Then, he did get engaged for what that's worth & has had plenty of time to reflect on things.

One can only hope that Carlyle is considerably more clear than the one Wilson delivered...that has got to help this group of D.

The way Carlyle is talking about intimidation etc, I can't wait to see Tyler Biggs at training camp next October, not to mention the likes of Ross & Devane.

You have to think Fraser/Holzer's toughness will be much in demand & it should be intersting to see who is prepared to go to "war".

Seems like Carlyle/Nonis will have a way better chance to play the way BB had always intended which yet again raises the question: If Wilson was never going to play the way BB wanted a team to, why keep him on as long as he did? BB was clearly jaded in respect of this, it makes no sense whatsoever.

Looking forward to watching these guys bring it on asap!

Lupul-Bozak-Kessel, MacArthur-Kadri-Kulemin, Connolly-Grabo-JVR, McClement-Hamilton-Brown, Orr-Steckel-Frattin, Komarov-Lombardi,

Those are a lot closer to the lines we might see on opening day.

I like the idea of putting Kadri between 2 good 2-way players like Kulemin and MacArthur.

Grabovski with JVR also seems good on paper.

Overall, again on paper, I like these lines. Replace Orr with Komarov and it's not half-bad.

Switch Connoly with Fratin and those look like 3 decent #2 lines, which may be how we win. Offence by committee

At the end of last year they did say they were going with a top 9 bottom 3. This works. I think Kadri and Grabovski switching on their lines makes sense though..

MacArthur-Kadri-Kulemin

If that's who Kadri is skating with in camp good for him. I'm just wondering, does anyone know why there is doubts about Kadri's inability to play top 6 for us? Even in a third line roll, wouldn't leafs coaching staff or management want to cut someone other then him seeing as this is his 3rd camp? I know camp just started and we don't know whether or not he makes the team or not yet but I always have my doubts and I love the kids offensive skill and he's dynamite in shootouts (not exactly our strong suit).

edit: I realize his defensive play isn't all that fantastic, but same can be said about other leafs forwards.

I would like to see:

Lupul Bozak Kessel
JVR Grabbo Kulemin
Connolly Kadri Frattin
Brown McClemment Komarov

Don't much care for Steckel, Lombardi, Orr, Hamilton, or Mac.

I wish we would've just made the deal for Mac last year, but maybe this year he plays his way to earning us a late 1st by the deadline. Steckel wins faceoffs and not much else, Lombardi is a spare part, and Hamilton is a Marlie.

I like those lines a lot. I would put Frattin on the third line though. And JVR switched with MacArthur. Although MacArthur and Kadri did have good chemistry last year.

We did talk about switching to a top 9 - bottom 3 approach.
Carlyle liked having
All out O
Sheltered O
Shut Down
Grinder

So I could see something like
Lupul - Kadri/Bozak - Kessel
Kulemin/JVR - Grabo - Mac
JVR/Kulemin - Kadri/Bozak - Fratin

That look like an exciting top 9, and Kule-Grabo-Mac was our shut-down type line 2 years ago

@HennyTweets: Leafs add 2 ouaa practice goalies for camp...brandon maxwell (guelph) and josh unice(western). #leafs

Must be awesome and terrifying all at once for those guys.

Hopefully Carlyle gives Dion the greenlight to throw a lot of big hits like he did earlier in his career. I think it will give him more confidence and make us just that much tougher and scarier to play against. It might be worth a couple penalties if it makes guys overthink what they do when they see Dion on the ice.

Dion seems a lot more chipper this year.

I liked Burke, but the more I think over his firing and watch nonis, the more I'm liking the move by the owners. The negativity that Wilson and Burke brought and displayed on a regular basis put the team in a bad light. It's refreshing to see our coach and gm smiling. I'm sure the players feel the same way, at the end of the day their jobs are no different then ours, it sucks working with and especially for people who aren't happy.

The negativity comes from losing and only losing.

If the team doesn't improve under Nonis and Carlyle, the negativity will be back.

If I had to make lines, based on what Carlyle has done:

Lupul-Bozak-Kessel
JVR-Grabo-Kulie
Mac-Kadri-Frattin
McClement-Steckel-Komarov/Orr

I honestly think when Nonis said "you may see some suprising decisions" and somethign to the effect of "Some players may have to adjust to the AHL" he meant that the likes of Connolly and Lombardi, if they don't impress at camp, won't be on this team.

I honestly don't see a place for them, to me they don't offer value above Kadri, and certainly don't have a place on a grinding line.

Bull****, Burke and Wilsons rough exteriors are their trademarks, win or lose.

That's not negativity, that's their style.

If they won, there wouldn't be negativity around the club.

It does play a factor though.

Losing with a more positive approach of building towards a goal, developing young talent and getting better everyday is quite a bit better than losing with a negative approach where the coach is calling out players, the GM is open with the media about how he wants to make changes etc. Makes it alot easier to come to work and "get back in the saddle"

It plays a factor in what?

Making it easier to come to work? What does that have to with the negativity from the fans and media? There is only one cure for that.. winning.

I don't think the original poster about this "negativity" was referring to fans and media. He was referring to the demanor of people in the organization, like Nonis, Carlyle and other players.

But certainly it can affect the fans and media. Edmonton's fans and media haven't been nearly as hard on them for a team who has faired so poorly, because they know there is a plan in place and that the young players are developing.

Having a GM and coach who can back up that sentiment and let everyone know there is a plan to build up the young talent while still trying to win is better than a GM who says he "hates losing" and "wants to accelerate the rebuild" and a coach who calls out young players put in compromising situations because his job is on the line like he did with Kadri.

I've said for the last year and a bit the reason Burke would get fired early is because of his friendship with Wilson and the amount of rope he gave him to coach this team ... This resulted in a severe lack of success, which was a big reason for Burke's firing.

Glad to see Nonis and Carlyle working on the same page, I'm excited to see the Leafs in a more physical and defensive style of hockey .. Especially with the above players mentioned coming up through the system

Maybe he kept Wilson for so long waiting for Carlyle to get fired..? I guess he could've got rid of him sooner but then Burke wouldn't have been able to get his guy.
