Sure, now that FA is here.
There are often trades before the draft.
You can turn that around and say that teams want to acquire key players before FA Frenzy so they know what they are shopping for.
By mid July everyone's core roster is set. The only trades then are for depth that they didn't get in FA. The FA disappointed by the offers they got are shopping for whatever they can get. After FA, everyone has spent their cap. That goes double for the contenders who had less cap space to begin with. They cleared space for FA and now they are done.
Helle wants a contender. Not much chance of that 2-3 weeks from now. It is even extra difficult to move contracts to open space for him. I assume Scheif is in the same boat. He won't want to go to a rebuilding team either.
Edit: Going back to NJD. They have 5.6 in cap space with 19 on the roster. Fill the 4 spots with 1mil players and they are down to 1.6 cap space. So any deal is going to have to have a lot of cap coming back.
Not Schmid, but Vanacek. Not Holtz, but Toffoli. That is not altogether bad for Jets. He is the better player. But he is only signed for 1 more year. Then add Marino. That's all we get.
It solves NJD cap issues with enough to sign Helle. Helle replaces Vanacek. Holtz steps in for Toffoli. Nemec replaces Marino. So it makes sense for NJ. It isn't much for us though. Vanacek is Pavlecian. Toffoli is gone in a year. We get Marino for 2RHD. Then we need to make room for him.
Maybe we get Holtz instead of Toffoli. The cap might still work. It would be tight for them but that is a better return for us. Though from what I read NJ fans are disappointed in Holtz and would be glad to get something for him.
In think their contract demands are likely also a factor. Teams are gonna look for cheaper options before circling back.
