I wouldn’t mind grabbing a scrappy player today.
In line with the direction we seem to be going and need to go.

Canes just keep loading up. Now adding Bunting and Orlov.

Not many reasons to be optimistic as a Jets fan so far. Unless subtracting Wheeler turns out to be addition by subtraction, we are weaker up front and stagnant on the back. Let's hope that changes.

Sprong to Detroit 1 year $2m. Solid flyer on a guy who just had a breakout season with the Krakheads.

I know it is still way too soon for this conclusion but - more and more I think we are going into the season with Scheif and Helle. Extended, or not. Traded at the TD, or not. Walk for nothing, or not.

I guess it is the lack of buzz around either one. And that is where it is too soon. Teams have been occupied with the draft, buyout deadline and now FA. Also the ghosts of off-seasons past have my expectations low.

But they really should have been traded before the draft.

Anyone else here old enough to remember this guy?

Their lineup for next year is just about ready, with no less than 356 prospects in the pipeline to fill in the gaps. The question is, do Bunting and Orlov solve their problem of having no scoring depth whatsoever?

Also, I have absolutely no clue why they brought both Raanta and Andersen back. Yes, "injuries" is the correct answer, but they're paying Kochetkov an actual salary now. Should have promoted him and let one of the oldies go.

The Canes are everything I want/wish the Jets to be.

they just need Svechnikov to be healthy and Jarvis to take another step.

I don't agree. They don't have a single forward capable of taking over an entire game on his own, and I don't see Svechnikov as one either. Brind'amour's coaching style might be effective, but it has now systematically fallen short for quite some time. It feels like they could really benefit from someone who doesn't just shoot from anywhere to be effective.

I mentioned it before the draft and I'll say it again. I think both are likely going to be dealt later this summer if they are. Teams need to see what their rosters look like after FA frenzy.

Not many teams have a forward capable of taking over a game. there is only a handful of them in the league and some teams control a couple of them. Those tend to be found at the top of the draft and you usually either need to bottom out to find one, get extremely lucky in the draft or one needs to fall into your lap on a trade. The Canes are a good team, they are contenders and a few bounces more and they are in. You don't go to 3 straight conference finals as a bad team not capable of making it.

I don't think I said they were/are a bad team.

Sure, now that FA is here.
There are often trades before the draft.
You can turn that around and say that teams want to acquire key players before FA Frenzy so they know what they are shopping for.

By mid July everyone's core roster is set. The only trades then are for depth that they didn't get in FA. The FA disappointed by the offers they got are shopping for whatever they can get. After FA, everyone has spent their cap. That goes double for the contenders who had less cap space to begin with. They cleared space for FA and now they are done.

Helle wants a contender. Not much chance of that 2-3 weeks from now. It is even extra difficult to move contracts to open space for him. I assume Scheif is in the same boat. He won't want to go to a rebuilding team either.

Edit: Going back to NJD. They have 5.6 in cap space with 19 on the roster. Fill the 4 spots with 1mil players and they are down to 1.6 cap space. So any deal is going to have to have a lot of cap coming back.

Not Schmid, but Vanacek. Not Holtz, but Toffoli. That is not altogether bad for Jets. He is the better player. But he is only signed for 1 more year. Then add Marino. That's all we get.

It solves NJD cap issues with enough to sign Helle. Helle replaces Vanacek. Holtz steps in for Toffoli. Nemec replaces Marino. So it makes sense for NJ. It isn't much for us though. Vanacek is Pavlecian. Toffoli is gone in a year. We get Marino for 2RHD. Then we need to make room for him.

Maybe we get Holtz instead of Toffoli. The cap might still work. It would be tight for them but that is a better return for us. Though from what I read NJ fans are disappointed in Holtz and would be glad to get something for him.

I wonder if Helle ends up going to Buffalo. They need to make the playoffs and they have tons of young forwards.
