"BJORKMAN, BRUGUERA, IVANISEVIC, MARTINEZ ON TENNIS HALL OF FAME BALLOT
The overall results and the complete Induction Class of 2020 will be announced in January. The 2020 Induction Ceremony will be hosted on July 18, 2020 in Newport, RI." Bjorkman, Bruguera, Ivanisevic, Martinez on Tennis Hall of Fame ballot

I think the only retired man that has kihei's stamp of approval is Hewitt. I don't know if there are any retired women that have his approval. I imagine him living on the Kihei beach pictured above.
That's me in the speed boat.

My best friend lives there, so through the years my family and I have spent over a year on Maui. Couldn't have a better home away from home.

Wait so your username DID refer to THE Kihei beach? Lol and all this time I thought it was some obscure non geography-related reference.

I like the Youzhny hire, if that's what it is. Mikhail wasn't greatly talented but he was technically impeccable. I hope he works on Denis' tactics, for starters. but there are plenty of other issues, too, starting with Shapo's tendency to overhit putaways and pound them into the net but also including his return game where he often overhits as well. Maybe Youzhny can help him to think out there.

Well, the user name refers to the area on Maui which we stay, not specifically to any of the beaches of Kihei of which there are several. Kihei is as funky and affordable as Maui gets with lots of bars, nightlife, restaurants, stores, markets, scuba shops, etc. Just a neat place to hang out and watch the sunsets unfold and the whales jump (Kihei waters provide a sort of nursery for humpbacks who put on some spectacular shows for all to watch from mid December through most of May).

You can already see a difference. Way more chip returns by Denis this week just to get the ball back in play instead of trying to blast winners. Plus picking the right time to come to the net and more patient during points.

Youzhny could really be the perfect fit for Denis.

Denis will get the winner of Tiafoe/Hurkacz tonight in the SF. They are still playing in the 2nd set. Could be an advantage for Denis.

You don't see this set score everyday--Paire over Johnson 1-6, 6-love, 6-love. By the end Johnson just wanted to go somewhere and hide.

Just caught up with Shapo's match against Hurkacz. Denis' return game was the pits most of the day and Hurkacz played defensive-minded, well thought out tennis. Pretty much an open and shut case.

Happy Birthday Althea Gibson!

Qualifier Liggett wins her first tourney and Hurkacz wins also against the talented bearded Frenchman Paire who likes to speak French to himself during matches. I'd like to see a Paire vs Kyrgios match someday. Hurkacz is one to watch at the US Open.
I never thought Paire was as talented as people say he is. He has a nice serve and forehand when he is on his game, but how long is he ever on for. He's inconsistent as hell, his ground strokes can break down under pressure, often of his own making, and he is a still a disaster volleying at the net. Plus, he is a nervous closer, average, at most, return of server, and uses a wacky forehand grip that breaks down when he is not on his game and insures frequent forehand errors. He's good enough to be in the 25 to 50 range now. But that's definitely the ceiling.

.... And happy birthday, Althea, too.

Andy Murray will continue his comeback tour today in Mallorca. He'll be up against some 17 year old with $150 career earnings. This was posted over on MTF but I thought I'd share it here. Too funny

I'm watching a match and the announcers made a point I made here. It's only in the last 20-25 years that most of the top players have played all 4 majors every year which has made winning more majors possible.

That’s actually a fair point, the Aussie Open was the ugly duckling of majors for a long time, because of where and when it was. If you take the Aussie Open wins off the big three the conversation about greatest ever would take a bit of a shift since Djokovic won it seven times and Roger six. Their totals without:

Nadal 17 majors
Federer 14 majors
Djokovic 9 majors

When did that really start? I recall Lendl skipping the French open so he could practice for Wimbledon and it being a big deal (and an anomaly) That would have been about 25-30 years ago.

I can definitely see it, as I imagine the cost and trouble of going to Australia wouldn't have been worth it for a lot of players back in the day, but I'd think the big name players would have the incentive to do so.

The Australian Open used to be the last open of the calendar year in December I think, that was part of the problem. Sort of like the Belmont for horses, people didn’t want to go unless there was a Grand Slam on the line, say if Borg had ever won the US Open and got the first three legs then he’d have gone to Australia. It’s less avoidable now that it’s first up on the schedule instead of last up.
