I'd been thinking about this comment since I read it. I had also been musing about Medvedev and thinking he might have a shot of ending up better than all the Next Gens ahead of him, mainly because his unorthodox game was so solid and it just looked like he was getting better and better as the season progressed. In his age group only Sascha really has his number and who knows what direction Zverev is headed. His match tonight against Nole lends more fuel to the notion that he has a higher ceiling than I initially gave him credit for.

You're right it sure does. And I certainly did not see this coming either. Maybe he is really good? Let's see what happens tomorrow.

Well, wasn't that unexpected? I tuned in at 2-1 in the third and waited for Djoko ice to break and then win. Surprise!

#62 Sveta has 3 top 10 wins this week and faces #13 Maddy.

#15 Goffin makes his first Masters 1000 Final to face #7 Medvedev who has played 15 matches in 19 days. The depth of the men is under rated, because of the dominance of the Big 3. I still think Thiem is the 4th best man.

I like Canada/Russia rivalries. We might get one in tennis in the Davis Cup. Who do you like? Felix, Milos, Denis or Daniil, Karen, Andrey? Pretty good match up either way.

In the first set yesterday, according to a graphic that came up on the screen, Medvedev averaged 98 mph on his second serve in the first set; in the final two sets, he average 112 mph on his second serve. That borders on the unbelievable, but it sure as hell is one way to change a losing game. All tennis coaches ever born tell you to do that but few actually accomplish the feat this dramatically.

Svetlana served for the first set at 5-4 and then played three weak games to lose 7-5. Definitely a quick turn around.

2nd set: Keys wins the breaker 7-4 after a well played set by both women. Madison definitely ready for New York. Great tournament for Svetlana.

While not the masterpiece we saw yesterday, Medvedev wins a first set breaker in a set that contained patches of very clever play from both players. Goffin had some success drawing Daniil to the net and survived an early break, but in the end Medvedev had all the answers. It appears there is no such thing as playing too much tennis for him.

2nd set: Daniil gets another early break and isn't threatened until he is attempting to serve out the match when he falls behind a rejuvenated Goffin 15-40. He responds with a fit of pique and four aces, one on a second serve clocked at 123 mph. Wow. Looked fresh as a daisy, too.

Roger Federer Wasn’t Clutch, But He Was Almost Clutch Enough

This chart claims to show the most clutch men's tourney performances since 1981. Obviously, Novak at the last Wimbledon is #1.

Felix will move into the top 20 tomorrow (#19).

Officially Canada's #1.

He may hold that title for a little while. He only has 169 points to defend the rest of the year. Raonic and Shapovalov have 325 and 345 to defend respectively. Shapovalov in particular needs to get his game in gear, or risk missing main draws on some tournaments.

While breaking into the top 20 is big for Felix, I don't think he'll move much higher this year. He still seems like he needs to sort out some big pieces of his game to bring some consistency. If he continues to work at it though, and has a healthy 2020, he should be able to move up nicely.

Agree with those points.

After the USO he's heading to Asia. He's on the EL for Chengdu (Denis too).

I wonder a little about fatigue (both physical and mental). First full year on tour and it's a grind.

To quote Mark Twain, there are lies, damned lies and statistics. How could Ivanisevic be #3 on that list when if he had not finally won the championship on his fourth tortured match point, he was in danger of going down as the greatest choke artist in history. Those first three match points were the very antithesis of clutch. And where is Roger's 2017 Australian championship when he recovered from 1-3 against Nadal in the fifth set and saved two break points in the final game before winning. If that is not one of the greatest clutch responses in the history of tennis, especially so given its context, I don't know what is.

So us tennis junkies aren't the only ppl who've been ignoring Daniil Medvedev. Not only has his victory generated hardly any buzz in social media, but as of today he has 15.8k followers on twitter, which is insanely little fanfare for a top-5 athlete in one of the most-watched sports in the world.

You know what? I'm with Tuggy.... I hope he continues his ascent and gets more recognition as he does so.

Sandgren wore a white undershirt against Murray. Have some self respect. Here are the things I would change about tennis:

1. Wear a decent outfit. No undershirts. Wimbledon should remain almost all white.
2. No grunting. It doesn't help. Some players make a 3-4 syllable bird call. Have some self respect.
3. No WTA on court coaches visits during the match. Tennis is an individual mental sport and strategy is king.
4. You can only use a towel in between games. In between points is ridiculous and unnecessary.
5. You kids, get off my lawn! ;)

Funny thing, I noticed that about Sandgren last night, too, though it didn't bother me. I also noticed that his socks, his ball cap and his shorts each had a different logo on them. I wonder if he has had trouble keeping a sponsor, given his anti-gay tweets (now deleted) and alt-right dalliances (now disavowed, for the record anyway).

Andy lost a tough match to Sandgren, though, 7-6, 7-5, especially after coming back from two breaks down at the start of the second set. Gonna be a slow process for him, but he looked better last night than he did in his first match back against Gasquet.

Lee Duck-hee won his first match on the ATP tour last night. Why is that noteworthy? He is deaf. That's an amazing accomplishment for Lee as hearing is so central to the game.

I wonder how big a deal it is to someone who has been deaf their whole life. For us who hear, it sounds like a huge deal but for someone deaf, it could at times be a benefit. They wouldn't hear the sounds in the crowd that are so irritating to us who can hear. They'd be used to not hearing the ball hit the racquet or ground. It will be interesting to see how far he comes.

Denis beat Sandgren in Winston-Salem tonight. Denis was cruising along at 6-2 3-0 and then things went a little off the rails. Went to 3-4 then 6-4.

Whatever, he needs the wins.

Rumblings that Denis might be striking up a coaching partnership with Mikhail Youzhny.

Youzhny could definitely help with the mental side of the game since Denis tends to be a ball basher most of the time.

I think the only retired man that has kihei's stamp of approval is Hewitt. I don't know if there are any retired women that have his approval. I imagine him living on the Kihei beach pictured above.
