After a disappointing first set, Shapo dominates to win in three sets over Sousa. Definitely a step in the right direction.

A very nice, come-from-behind three set win for Opelka over Coric, 7-5 in the third. Reilly seems to be getting more confident in his game as the year progresses.

yep
not nearly as much as a boring serve-bot as Isner but he did have a fault today that was hit so hard it got stuck in the net

Londero is making a bit of a late-bloomer run up the rankings, currently #54, and he is fun to watch. He has the looks of a Euro Vogue high fashion model (the Hydrogen gear helps), and every now and then a touch of the hauteur. But despite his slight build, he is a real bulldog with a bone out there and possesses a gnarly game. Normally. Though that hasn't helped him too much against Roger tonight....

First Canadian woman to win the Canadian Open in decades, a teenager and in front of a crowd that saw 4 games. I'd say it was perfect. She was having fun after one hell of a week.
Technically true (it's been driving me crazy hearing the commentators talking about this without context), but here's what it looked like when Faye Urban won in 1969:
1R
Benita Senn-Marian Munroe 6-2 6-2
Jade Schiffman (USA)-Shari Barman (USA) 6-3 6-4
Tish Adams (USA)-Michelle Carey 7-5 6-1
Louise Brown-Susan Eager 6-4 4-6 6-0
Patricia Montano (Mex)-Janice Tindle (4) 6-1 3-6 6-4
Andree Martin (4)-Kathleen O'Grady (SAF) 6-2 6-0
Inge Weber-Della Lubin 6-4 6-2
Jane O'Hara-Noreen King 6-0 6-0
Mary McAnally (GBR)-Ardis Savard 6-2 6-1
2R
Faye Urban (1)-Penny Sparling 4-6 6-0 6-0
Benita Senn-Stephanie Green 5-7 6-1 6-3
Jade Schiffman (USA)-Tish Adams (USA) 7-5 6-3
Louise Brown-Patricia Montano (Mex) 7-9 6-2 7-5
Vicki Berner (2)-Vivienne Strong 4-6 6-2 8-6
Karen Wills-Heather Young 1-6 6-3 6-4

Faye Urban (1)-Benita Senn 6-1 6-4

75% Canadian players, plus some foreign players who happened to be in Canada at the time. What Andreescu did is unprecedented.

Eugenie lost in the first round of the tournament in Vancouver to extend her losing streak. She showed promise in her match against Bianca. However, after Bianca won, she joked on twitter that it meant that she could have won their Rogers Cup.

Yes, it's a Twitter joke, but, it kind of sums up her attitude. She seems to want the spotlight that comes with being an elite player, but doesn't want to put the work in.

Here's the Rogers Cup tweet from a few days ago

It's a joke.

She doesn't need to be an elite player to get the spotlight. She's got it already, and outside of the tennis world is probably the second most famous women's tennis player behind Serena.

She's just not that good at tennis.

It was a bad joke, IMO. I doubt she meant any harm, but it can easily be perceived as undercutting Bianca's accomplishment.

I just find it pretty funny to make that statement, even as a joke, and then flame out in the first round of a low level tournament.

I'm not even sure she's in the top 10
I think her name recognition has faded really quickly, it's not as if she got a boat-load of endorsements that have kept her mug out there*
*this may be different in Canada, for sure

That's fair. I definitely don't think she was trying to undermine Bianca and I'm sure Bianca doesn't think so as they seem to have a good relationship.

I may be influenced by Canada, but in terms of social media she is easily top 5. I'm not sure how many people recognize other women's tennis players other than Serena. It seems to be ever changing who the top player is and not many have staying power. I suppose Venus and Sharapova may still be up there as well. Maybe Wozniacki too.

There are probably herrings swimming in the North Sea who can return serve better than Shapo is at the moment. 3-5.

Denis drops the first set due to a break in the first game and is now serving in the second set to start, and he isn't making it easy on himself.

Tsitsipas lost to Struff in 3.

Zverev loses again.

Denis loses.

Pouille has a remarkably easy time against Denis, and on hard courts no less. Despite landing only half of his first serves, Pouille somehow didn't allow a single break point opportunity. Of course, at the rate that Shapo kept spraying service returns into the net and past the sidelines, Pouille didn't really have to do anything even remotely special. Denis wouldn't even give him a chance to choke even though Lucas, ever helpful, donated two double faults in the final game that Shapo took zip all advantage of.

I wonder what the brain trust is thinking about at the moment. Maybe about a landscape with big, stormy-looking clouds.

The numbers 5-7 men in the world all lost today.

Del Potro is out of the US Open with a bad right knee.

Shut the hell up Nick. This guy complains about everything, the act is beyond tiring. 1st class talent, no class clown.
It's not entertaining, it's idiotic.

Edit: And he's about to throw the match in typical Nick fashion. Good riddance.

Could do without the Nick vs the Umpire + Serve Clock subplot, but this Krygios/Khachanov match is providing plenty of intrigue so far.

I went to bed late in the second and was pleasantly surprised to wake up to the result. He is such a miserable person. He had a code violation early in the first game fir slamming a ball into the stands. Who gets that pissed off so early? And then all the crap about the ump and the time clock. Go away Nick.

As far as I can tell other players seem to like him for the most part, minus the shananigans bit. And he is one of the few players out there beside the demigods who actually attract paying customers. I agree he needs a long suspension--or something that will actually catch his attention--and he needs to commit to counselling that he takes seriously. I guess what I am trying to say is if I had a magic wand that would remove him from the tour right now, I wouldn't use it.

Agreed with all that. I'm not defending his behavior. He's talented enough that he could go to the semis in a major. I have seen some data that suggests he is the 5th most popular player on both tours after Serena and the Big 3.

Rublev takes out Roger. Seema to be a good tournament for the young Russians.
I have to see this. I like Rublev and he has finally got his mojo to work once again.

When I saw Kuznetsova at the Roger's Cup it was like she was on her deathbed, a totally spent force. Up against Stephens in Cincy, I bet all my remaining vcash on Sloane who I felt was the lock of the century, if not the millenium. Final result: Svetlana wins one and two. Nothing for me to do but to laugh and tip my hat to her.
