I do think Tavares is in an interesting situation because of the 35+ contract thing.

If he signs a 7 year, he's 34, and some team could still sign him for like a 5 year contract without the 35+ penalty.

If he signs an 8 year, he's 35, and a team will be less likely to give him a 5 or 6 year contract for the threat he could retire or stop playing.

I just think if he had already made the decision to leave he would have been open with the Isles about it and they would have moved him at the deadline or on draft day for something. I think hes open to it, but hes looking for something to push him over the edge. He already knows all about northern california so what is that push going to be?

I have hope, I just have zero expectations
I think Parise was similar. Obviously not the same caliber player but similarly important to the devil's organization. He kept the devils guessing all the way till the end

Interesting point, I hadn't considered this. Still think 8 years might be appealing simply for the certainty it gives him in the here and now.

Not sure if any players were at the meeting today, but Pavelski's instagram shows that he is very much not in Los Angeles.

I think thats an oversimplification. Does Tavares want to wait till his early 30's (another 4 years) before he COULD have a chance to compete with NYI OR does he want to be competing right away and also on a yearly basis.

Given our record of making playoffs I think that will be our biggest selling point.

Not surprised to see Ross take the safe opinion. Right if he stays, wrong if he doesn't, but who cares cuz Sharks get Tavares in that scenario.
His hockey insight/connections is no better than Ratto.

Still waiting for him to tweet that Tavares re-signed only to realize hours later that he's looking at a tweet from 2011.

Dont get my hopes so high :crossfing:cry::cry:

Eh, I really just read that as a fan being hopeful. Sure, the owner leaving a meeting in the middle (and being escorted out by bosses) can be a good sign and often is. But not always. I put it in the same category as Leafs' fans thinking that Tavares was meeting with teams in the order in which he has them ranked (so Leafs are #1, Isles #2, etc.).

Yah. I dont think this is going to be about $$ at all. It is going to be more about the environment/culture of the team AND area than anything else. Looking at it as neither a NYI or SJ fan, I would really be curious to know as to why he would chose NYI over SJ. I really cannot think of many things that favor NYI other than them being an east coast team (and lesser travel).

I agree. I don't understand why he would go back to the Isles except bc of loyalty and familiarity. If he wants to stay in the northeast (to be somewhat near his family and have the best travel), either Boston or Toronto would be better teams. If he wants a Cup soon, Tampa, SJ, Nashville, or even LV would probably be better.

He gave the Islanders a sweet contract (possibly the best in the NHL), and they did nothing to support him. They took his money and threw away his chances to compete, even in the playoffs, much less for a Cup. The new changes are good but they're still unproven. If they would have gotten new owners, a new GM, and a new coach a couple of years ago, I'd be more understanding. But they made their own bed by not giving themselves enough time before Tavares's contract expired to show him that it would work.

I think loyalty can be good but only if it goes both ways and it hasn't here.

Yep. This seems different for sure. Whether we land him or not, have to give kudos to DW for giving it his all.

I'm more impressed with Hasso coming to the meeting. Maybe I missed something but, so far, I haven't seen anything from DW that I wouldn't expect from a GM (or any exec). Has he done something to go above and beyond what the other GMs are doing?

Rumor is DW has offered up the use of his personal tanning bed for the 2nd Tuesday of every month for JT's use.

Do we know what presentations were made to JT? No.

Visiting players may see DTSJ or Santa Row, but often don't have time to really get to know area. So, they might have highlighted SF, NorCal activities/adventures. Deep sea fishing, sea lions in Farallons -- can't do all that around NYI.

Perhaps a discussion of his possible role on team, opportunities for community involvement.

And perhaps asking JT what he wanted (in terms of role, etc.)
