Everyone is shipping Tavares to Toronto, but I just don’t see it. I don’t think Toronto is really too different than NYI. Marner, Mathews and Nylander are obviously great talents - but past those three, I don’t see a lot to be excited about. They are still missing depth, their defense still has holes in it, and their culture is still running guys like JvR out of town. Toronto had a good year and made it into the playoffs. So did Edmonton last season. Look how that turned out. And that’s my point, Toronto still needs a ton of work to actually be a contender. And now that they aren’t drafting 1OA, you gotta question where is it gonna come from?
It’s like this:
Pavelski = Mathews
Couture = Nylander
Hertl = Marner
But who equals...
Burns? Not Gardiner
Vlasic? Not Anyone, lol.
Tierney? Not Bozak.
Kane? Not Kadri.
Thornton? Not Marleau.
Dillion? Not Roman Polak.
And those are the “core” parts. Even the “depth” they have no answer for. Karlsson, Donskoi, Braun, Heed, Ryan, Labanc, Timo, hell Eric Fehr. Past those top three, Toronto is still a team in progress. They may compete one day, but they still have years to go in their rebuild.
San Jose is gonna compete next year. With or without Tavares. Hell, Jumbo doesn’t go down, and PDB players Ryan from game 1 and we are very likely a third round team this year.
I just think Toronto thinks way too highly of itself. It’s really a lot closer to Buffalo or Edmonton than it is San Jose, Tampa or Nashville.
