Comrie played for two of the most goalie starved teams in NJ and Detroit and couldn't stick.

That's WAY disingenuous.

The year Comrie was with NJ (20/21), Jersey was absolutely committed to Blackwood as their starter. Wedgewood was coming off an OK season as Arizona's backup and was a known quantity to NJ. Comrie had 9 NHL starts at the time. Of course he "couldn't stick"......he wasn't really given much of a chance to.

The year Comrie was with Detroit (19/20), Detroit had Howard and Bernier splitting the nets. Howard had been a good soldier for Detroit for years and hadn't bottomed out yet. They weren't sending him to the AHL. Bernier was flat-out playing better than Howard. Comrie never had any sort of chance to stick.

Last year was the first year he was given a legit chance, and he was rock solid for Winnipeg. Then for us, he had a solid if unspectacular month of October......then was absolutely left hung out to dry by a lack of NHL-level defensemen....and then got hurt. Yes, he looked rusty against Seattle but looked fine against Winnipeg.

We don't know what we have in Comrie..........but I like what @old kummelweck said -- he seems to make the saves he should right now. In Calgary and Edmonton, he made a bunch of saves he shouldn't have; he's shown that ability.

I'm not willing to pay the price needed for a Demko or a Saros or someone of that ilk unless they come dirt-freaking-cheap, which they won't.

If we were getting league average goaltending as measured by save percentage we would have 10 fewer goals allowed. Not sure how many more points
that translates to.

Will fix everything

I mean....it's hard to equate goals against into points. Especially when comparing goalies in different systems behind different rosters. You can't say "Oh if we plugged in this goalie at that is .905 on team A, we'd have allowed 15 less goals". That goalie might not be a .905 here. We have an exceedingly young roster, on defense especially. We don't really have a goalie friendly system. I do think improving our goaltending is probably one the biggest pieces in improving our roster, but I think changes in front of the goalie are important as well.

If they go into next year with UPL and Comrie they better make f***ing moves around them. Because its a disaster.

On the bright side maybe 2 more years of missing will force someone somewhere to do something

Comrie hasn't had much of a chance this year due to injuries, and UPL is just starting to look like an NHL goalie as of 2 months ago. It's impossible to say that it's a disaster next season. They've both had some excellent play this year and some subpar play this year, but neither has had any kind of consistent rhythm.

It's all about what they did in their most recent games. Just look at how many people were saying Dostal sucks last night, and that he's a bad goalie. Yet if you look, he's had 6 games with a save % over .900, and 2 below. 5 of those games he was a .920 or better. Also he has faced 40+ shots in 5 of those 8 games, and 38 shots in another. He had a bad night, every goalie does.

This board is very what have you done for me lately, but even some who have been very critical of the goalies have admitted it's as much of a system issue as it is a player issue.

I like UPL, but you really need a steady NHL guy to help him. Comrie, to be frank, isn't that guy in his first year as a starter.

The UFA market isn't as bare as previous years. Andersson, Talbot, Raanta could all fit that mold as a short term veteran to compliment UPL.

Raanta is a guy who could be a real low key bargain to me. He's put up solid numbers his entire career mostly as a back-up and seems like a guy who can be whatever you need him to be whether that's a short term starter, 1A/B or back-up. I do wonder what Carolina does though. They have Kochetkov likely penciled in for next season, do they re-sign Anderson, Raanta or go with someone else to platoon?

The first 2 lines describe Comrie, as well

Raanta has a long track record, Comrie didn't. I don't believe they'll give up on Comrie next year, but I would absolutely take Raanta/UPL over Comrie/UPL if given the choice. It's nothing against Comrie at all I just think Raanta is more stable. His numbers were pretty close to Kuemper in Arizona, and Lundqvist while he was in NY.
