Confirmed with Link: All-Purpose "Days of Our Meruelo" Talk

I'm a little confused here. We already knew if the AM loses the auction, they're almost certainly relocating, XG even said as much, and we already knew the location would be Utah. So of course they're going to start getting all of that ready in the event AM doesn't win the auction. Unfortunately for rt (and all of us really),I think Feck has been right all along, they can and absolutely will relocated to Salt Lake in the off season if they need to but to do that you start working on it now. That's how a contingency plan is supposed to work, you prepare ahead of time even if you hope to not have to use it.

So I guess all I'm asking is what is new here? Because unless I'm missing something, everything still hinges on June 27th. :dunno:

This is what my initial thought was... as someone who has been following all this everyday... I genuinely didnt think this was anything new from what XG said. I always thought this was all just the contingency plan... but idk

The team literally said if they don’t win the auction they will relocate and now the earth is shattering because it’s come out that the league is making two schedules just in case? Or am I missing something?

I don't want to sound like a know-it-all prick (even though I know for a fact that I will - and, in fact, always do ), but I DID try and tell all of you this weeks ago. This was always an option... in fact, the option. It hasn't changed.

The only wildcard now is whether there's any possibility that Meruelo dumps the team in April and banks on an expansion team, or if that particular bit is just wishful thinking by Smith boosters and BoH speculators. And I don't think anyone but Alex Meruelo and possibly Gary Bettman knows that for sure.

There's nothing new, but engagement farmers want to farm engagement, so they keep making the same articles over and over again, framing them slightly different to pretend it's new. It's still the contingency plan in case they don't win the land auction. But people think because they learn details of the contingency plan, that means it's not just a contingency plan.

My two cents. Having a Plan B (relocation, which means scheduling as well as a deal with SLC in place) fully ready to implement is surely a requirement from the NHL for AM to proceed with the auction.
Yes exactly, it would be foolish of them not to get their ducks in order in the event AM gets beat out at the auction. It seems he's the real deal and will win it but still they'd be dumb not to plan for the possibility that he does not.

I think it's this:

1. Primary goal is to win the auction.
2. If they don't win the auction, they play in SLC beginning next season.

All today's news confirms is that there is no Arizona-based Plan B to the auction such as a different site (Mesa, etc.) and another viable and locally based owner (Ishbia, etc.).

Edit: If they do win the auction, all the pre-work SLC has put in (logos, etc.) can still be used for an expansion team.

I'm confident nothing happens until after the auction. And then it will be dependent on the outcome. I believe what XG said in his last presser more than anything else he's ever said. It seemed genuine and wasn't sugar coated for once.
Well, what if the team is sold April 18th??

What’s new is the assertion from Seravalli and Friedman that this may happen in April. That’s what people are worked up about. Friedman said on the Marek podcast there’s a good chance this happens this month.

The hardest part of today's "news" is that it made the idea of relocation more tangible. It didn't make it any more likely IMO.

Then I guess that would mean I was wrong?

Still, none of this "news" says that relocation is for sure. I won't treat it like it does.

Even if there is relocation confirmed before the land auction, I'm assuming they continue to focus on winning the land auction, and then immediately (as soon as a stadium is built on that land) bring in an expansion team back.

It would absolutely suck to lose these young guys (there should be some mandate that Josh Doan at the very least has to return to Arizona if this happens). I would have preferred they just go play in SLC for a few years and then return when the arena is ready, but that's messy too.
