NHL players didn't get paid last week. Why it matters –...

Why players didn’t take their pay
If the NHL doesn’t play the playoffs in 2019-20, it’s going to have a massive impact on league revenues. Talk in hockey circles is the damage will likely fall somewhere between $1 billion and $1.2 billion.

Because players’ pay is tied directly to hockey-related revenues in a given season through the escrow system, they will be significantly impacted by that drop — regardless of the dollar value on their contract.

A $1.1 billion shortfall, for example, would mean more than 20 percent of NHL revenues weren’t realized, which makes sense given TV contracts will have to be redefined and gate revenues for 15 percent of the regular season and all of the postseason would be lost.

Mommy, I have always wanted to be sick as a dog for two weeks.

I despise parents who bring their <10 yr olds to a rally, holding a sign with something the parent thinks. I hate parents who are able to act like their <10 yr old kid is able to reasonably come up with a "Mr. XY can keep his poison" quote. Disgusting people who are using a kid to push their opinion.

Finally finished reading that Athletic piece. Bottom line is the league, and the players, really need to have the playoffs this summer.

You wonder, however, if all 31 NHL teams will be able to remain solvent long term in this environment. There is already talk of some owners feeling strain, after a little more than a month, given what’s happened to the markets and many of their businesses across North America.

What happens if revenues crater further and owners want out? How profitable will some of these teams be if there is no gate revenue, even if player salaries come down dramatically? The reality is that the NHL is far more vulnerable in this situation than the NBA, NFL and MLB, who pull a far higher percentage of their revenues from massive television deals.

For now, the primary hope at the league level is that they can get back to playing games in neutral-site locations this summer, which would allow them to fulfill their television and sponsorship deals and ease the revenue shortfall as best they can for 2019-20. Then they’ll worry about 2020-21 and beyond after that point.

I've become more sympathetic to people who are anti-vax. Their movement is unquestionably ridiculous, but I understand some of the motivation for decision to act. There are reasons to be upset with the healthcare system the multitude of anti-vaxxers are just poorly informed and threw their energy into propping up a conspiracy theory.

Try to remember that this parent is convinced that they're doing right by their child.

It's a powder keg for sure. You've got a clear dropoff in the confidence of operational profitability after 12 teams -- NYR, MTL, TOR, CHI, BOS, LAK, PHL, WAS, PIT, VGK, VAN, and DET. Then you have a middle class with teams like NJD, STL, EDM, MIN, and DAL.

But there's a sizable amount of teams that are going to be in trouble even with empty-arena resumption. Everyone knows about Florida and Arizona, but Columbus, Nashville, NYI, Anaheim, and Winnipeg were already likely going to be operating in the red before this happened.

I understand the motivation and usually try not to ridicule their opinion (which may sound ironic given some of my sarcastic posts on HF) - but using my child as a mean to push what I feel is incredibly despicable

You have a responsibility to your child not to be an idiot.
Whether that means don't text or drive drunk with the kids in the car, or doing due diligence about things that may harm them, like failing to vaccinate them.

Anti-vaxers (and that includes the Kennedy idiot) simply are stupid, lazy people - you can spend a couple hours on Google and learn about vaccines, including the origins of the anti-vax movement and the lack of credible studies supporting their position.

If you love your children, there's no excuse not to be properly informed.

I agree, I don’t like when either side does it. I think it’s highly irresponsible.

I think ridiculing the opinion is fine.

At some level, this person should be held accountable for their error in judgement. However, I'm not sure if it's productive to attack anti-vaxxers for their actions. People who are driven to act by feelings rather than evidence are probably not able to be convinced of an opposing position. I'm more interested in understanding how this movement started and how we can use that knowledge to quell misinformation campaigns. For me, this is less a discussion of morality and more a point to go after bad actors with power to spread misinformation.

I know I'm generally more on the sarcastic side, but I'm legitimately curious on this one, and my work PC wont allow me to open the article for some reason -- Trump was quoted sometime last week that the crisis response was on the states, right? So following that logic, wouldn't it stand to reason that Hogan should be applauded for not causing a 'drain' on the federal government, and attempting to manage the crisis on his own, at the state level?

Unfortunately Trump didn't seem to realize that he would look feeble and bad once states actually started doing this, so now it's bad if you do it.

But also he's not going to help you either, so I guess the only option he approves is doing nothing and letting people die.

I do remember that those parents are convinced they're doing right by their child...by defying and denying overwhelming scientific evidence and selfishly pushing their own outlandish and harmful agendas with no regard for others or their children

It was a joke...

I'm not going to read the articles because of how everything from the President is flip flopping so much. Whatever was said will be different in a month.

There should be jail time for that if he survives:thumbd:
The way I read it a second time makes it seem like he waited until he was already into his quarantine period before announcing that he tested positive. Meaning he was beyond his quarantine period before going out.
