I'll turn this one into a Tortorella thread. If a discussion about Sather arises, then someone can make that respective thread.
 
With a win on Thursday this thread will for the most part dry up....to be replaced by threads stating we're going to win the Stanley Cup. Then a loss over the weekend, and we'll be right back here... :dunce:
 
Just because we're winning, doesn't mean all is solved. Four out of four points is great, but I still need to see more out of this team.

Avoid playing to your competition. No reason not to absolutely dominate Florida tomorrow night.

Also, last night there wasn't much puck possession, there wasn't much time "below the hash marks." What there was, was offense generating off of the rush with skill players playing to their strengths. Del Zotto's goal, coming down on the rush shorthanded. Hagelin's goal was created by zone time. Nash's goal was a simple rush.

Two of three goals coming off of letting the skill fly. If this is a trend that continues, then perhaps Torts is coming along.

There's no need for the Richards line to be forced to play a certain way in the offensive zone that is counterintuitive to the skillset those players have. Asking Richards and Gaborik to grind along the boards beneath the hash marks is meaningless. That's not Gabby's skillset, and it's really not Richie's either. Nash can handle that kind of game, but he's best suited playing a different style.

Wake me up when Torts realizes this. Just because they're all on the same team, doesn't mean they all have to play the same way.

The last two games are meaningless if they can't back it up tomorrow night. You want to see the boards in a panic? Imagine a typical Rangers letdown game tomorrow night against the worst team in the NHL. There are no guaranteed wins in today's NHL, Rangers can't sleep on the Panthers.

This is such a canard on these boards, that Torts isn't letting skilled guys make skilled plays. It's just absurd. Deboer himself said specifically that the Gabby-Richy-Nash line makes plays off the rush very differently than the Hags-Step-Cally line which looks to get the puck down low.

I don't know how else to wake up the torts hater and open his eyes. Just try to watch the game with an open mind and see what is actually happening instead of going in there specifically looking for and focusing on what the hater in you wants to hate on. Sometimes yes, everyone is going to dump and chase. But to say Torts isn't letting guys make plays off the rush is just counter to reality and is frankly an embarrassment to our boards that this falsity keeps coming up all the time.

You speak the truth, DeBoer did say that. That's completely ignoring the fact that Tortorella IS asking Gaborik to become a player he is not. Do the Rangers generate plays off the rush? Sure, sometimes. A lot of the time though it's dump and chase hockey. As I said, two of the three Rangers goals from last night were created off the rush, and I'd like to see MORE of that. Yet, Torts hampers that can't of hockey by employing the personnel he employs (see: the Rangers two fourth lines).

True, yet he did that as a RW, not LW. Gabs has looked a bit more comfortable on LW the past two games, I'd chalk that up to Nash being on his line more though. Nash creates space, which is good for Gaborik. However, Gaborik can create his own space as a RW. I'd suspect if Nash was taken off of Gaborik's RW, we'd see the early season Gaborik come back quickly.

I'm not sure I get this. By employing the personal he employs Torts is stopping Gaborik from scoring off the rush? Or by playing him on the wrong wing Torts is preventing Gabby from playing a creative game? The two fourth lines can grind while the top two lines play more creatively. I don't really agree with this assumption that Torts is telling skill guys not to play a skill game. He's seen Gabby play over the past few years - he knows that Gaborik can score and be a game breaking player off the rush. I really don't think he's dumb enough to suddenly insist that Gaborik not play that way at all. I think it's far more likely and far more logical that Gaborik has lost the edge off of his speed and his shot power and he's not playing an assertive game because of it.
 
all the people who support torts say "oh well players can carry it in if they want, torts doesn't ban them from doing it." sure maybe thats true to an extent but the guys who aren't good at carrying the puck up the ice aren't going to try it often and they're certainly not going to get better at it since dumping and chasing is the main strategy. why doesn't torts (since you know he is a coach and all) focus on the rush and transition game and implement it as part of the gameplan? how about they actually practice rushes and carrying the puck up ice in practice instead of torts saying "i dont focus on offense"

and people like to claim we have no puck carriers for that kind of play. carrying the puck through the neutral zone isn't rocket science. i mean good teams FOURTH liners do it all the time. maybe if they practiced it they could get better at it?

I think you're taking a few of my points and combining them into one when they are separate entities. That is probably my fault from the way I worded that post.

Bolded part: Funny, because Gaborik scored 40 goals as a RW and now he's a LW who looks more and more uncomfortable every night, so that's weird.

I admitted to Gaborik playing a bit better on the left side as of late, yet I think that's more Nash's doing than Gaborik's ability to gain comfort on the left.

Kreider coming up is a start in eliminating the Rangers two fourth lines problem.

Who cares whether or not he's "letting" them do it? The fact of the matter is they don't do it successfully on a consistent basis, and under him, they never really have. There are always other issues, even this season, but the bottom line is this team has never been very good at scoring under John Tortorella, even as the talent on the roster has risen.

By the way, never ceases to amaze me when this board's version of Chico Resch tells other people to have an "open mind" or has the nerve to call other opinions embarrassing. :laugh:

You can lead a horse to water but you can't make him drink. The coach isn't on the ice, if he's not forcing them not to play O and they're not playing O then that's on the players not the coach. I dispute the veracity of that point, but that's the way it would work logically.

Well it always amuses/creeps me out how you respond to such a high percentage of my posts, frequently in doing so giving me roles you think I'm playing: Slats, Torts, now Chico. Sting, I don't think of you in that way. I see you more as a brother.
 
What kind of system did Torts play in TB that year they won the cup. It seemed pretty high octane and high paced for a dead puck era team. It kind of ended that era before the lockout did.
 
Yea, he's a keeper.

I'm so sick and tired of this team getting stonewalled by back-ups while we have players like Gaborik, Nash, and Richards on the team.

We got a goal. 1 ****ing goal. Yippee!
 
This is probably what TB fans felt like before he got axed. This system is so painful to watch... It's such an eye sore x100000000.
 
Nash wasn't even on the ****ing ice until the pp after the goal. Pulling your goalie on a pp is the dumbest thing in sports
