I don't think Torts was the reason we lost last night, unless he was telling his players NOT to go to the net, which I highly doubt.
Del Zotto made some unforced, sloppy plays. Girardi made some unforced, sloppy plays. Boyle made some unforced, sloppy plays. You see where I'm going with this?
Last night was just a collective brain fart of a game. Simple mistakes led to goals against.

I call this state "fake contention." That's where I think we're at. Maybe we'll make the playoffs. Maybe we won't. It won't really matter either way. Dolan will get himself two or three extra games of revenue as the two moron Bostonian's and the cigar man buy themselves another year.
Ah yes, so we set our standards to that low of a level? We are a freaking original 6 franchise that generates the 2nd most revenue league wide. We have the best market to attract FAs. We have the resources to get a top notch scouting staff. There should be no excuses. A team in New York should be cup contenders year in, year out. Perhaps my expectations are too high because of the Yankees and Giants.
I didnt say a word about being happy about this season. Just calling you out on your BS and letting you know it could be worse, and it has been worse.
I don't really care about that long ago. I was just getting into hockey at that point. It shouldn't matter what happened in the past anyways.
Well, you should be aware of the past when you make outlandish comments like this is the worst position a franchise can be.
Imagine this with worse coaching (OMG can you believe that?!), no solid young players like Stepan, and no Lundqvist. A lot of us lived through that.

I don't think Kershaw meant to insinuate that this is the worst state the Rangers have ever been in. Rather, the spot this team has put itself in is not conducive to much other than disappointment. Nothing much to look forward to. No high draft picks, but no real contention, either.
It's the worst spot that ANY franchise can be in at any given time.
That being said, the team has plenty to build around. Nash and Stepan are going to be Rangers for a long time to come. So are McDonagh and MDZ (hopefully Staal). Best goaltender in the world. The pieces are there.

i mean yeah im sure he doesn't say not to go to the net, but he should be telling them TO go to net, don't you think? having all 3 guys below the goal line, what kind of strategy is that?
and DZ was in "del zaster" mode last night, i dont really put much of the blame on torts. he should have cut his ice time down though or split up him and girardi, their pairing was really bad.

I would be surprised if he isn't telling the players to go to the net. I mean, I'm not a fan of Torts, but I don't expect that level of incompetency from him. If he really is telling his players to just stay to the perimeter, than this team won't be winning a damn thing if he's coach. I'd hope management would realize that if that's truly the situation.

You're making his argument relative to the Rangers when it isn't. For any given franchise at any given time, being caught in limbo between rebuilding and competing to the point where you can't do much of either is a terrible position to be in.

The team uses the FA advantage and people whine incessantly about how they're not building from the draft.
As for "top notch coaching staff," say what you will about him now, but Torts has one of the most impressive resumes among current head coaches - a cup, a Jack Adams, 50 win season, most wins from an american coach and oh yeah, coached this team to it's best season in years. People complain about him a lot, but seriously, who is this "top notch" coach that's out there just waiting to be snatched up?
Lastly, there are more teams that should have "no excuses" than there are spots that people consider a success. Let's say making the conference finals is a success - that means 4 teams have successful seasons. There are more than 4 teams that have a handful of advantages and "no excuses" to not make it to that point. They lose. Other teams win. If the sport were so predictable that any team that seems like they have some advantages over others could waltz into a successful season, what would even be the point?

There is also a hard salary cap (VERY hard in the NHL compared to other leagues) that mitigates against a lot of the advantages we could have.

Free agency is only an asset if your management team is competent in evaluating talent and projecting the future of the player they're signing. This management team (well, Sather) has proven they're incapable of doing either of those things.
Hopefully Gorton and Schoenfeld can help fix this problem.

What serious problems have there been with UFA Signings? Gomez? Traded. Redden? Bought-out and did not hurt the team. Drury? Bought out at a negligible cap hit. Richards? He can be bought out. Gaborik? Traded for good young pieces. Voros? Traded for Eminger. Brashear? Buried and then traded.
Cmon Boyler? Just because Sather has an out clause with the signings means they didnt do damage to this team over the past several years?
I could list a whole litany of reason on how these UFA agent signings hurt the team, but the top 2 are:
1. these players were signed to perform roles they were simply incapable of filling.
2. Paying some of these players to go away takes resources away from other important areas, namely scouting
How in the hell can you defend what amount to some of the worst UFA signings in the history of the NHL?
