Does his usage of the 4th line bother anyone else? Not the amount of time they play but when they play. I can't prove this easily and maybe I'm wrong but it seems the majority of the time they are out is either:

1. After a goal by either team
2. Directly after a penalty

I don't see the reason for this. After we score they certainly aren't going to help us come back with a good shift right after and after we give one up they're definitely not going to help us come back right away. Additionally I don't understand why they are EVER out after a tv timeout or out taking an offensive zone faceoff when we are down. There's no need to use them after a timeout when every player just had 1:30 of rest and all our better lines should be good to go.

On a similar note today on one of our powerplays there was the shot that hit the post that went to review maybe 45 seconds to a minute into the powerplay. The review lasted a minute or two and then we came back with our second unit AFTER the review. Doesn't really makes sense - so what that the first unit was just out? They were given an opportunity to rest for a minute or two and should be good to go back out to continue the powerplay.

I feel the usage of the 4th line should be restricted to random shifts during the game or when we have a large enough lead late enough not to worry (not off offensive zone faceoffs, not when we are down enough that we can come back). The only time I can see them being used on faceoffs is maybe a neutral zone type situation after an offside or potentially in our own zone IF they are a good defensively responsible group.

My biggest concern is Tortorella putting out Richards and Clowe when we are stuck in our zone clinging to dear life in the waning moments of the third period in a crucial game tied 0-0. Seemed to me like he had no pulse on the game and kept throwing out the wrong players for the wrong reasons. We could have easily lost in regulation tonight if it wasn't for a few posts and crossbars. No communication, can't make a pass, and can't get shots through to the net in the offensive zone is inexcusable, but when your slowest players are in the defensive zone stuck in their end, well....that just spells trouble. I wonder how much Tortorella really knows about hockey sometimes. I know his resume, and I think he's a good coach, but very flawed.

I give you John Tortorella

Our best faceoff guy by far Brian Boyle is no longer taking faceoffs while the team is getting slaughtered every night in the circle. I think that sums up our head coach quite nicely.

asphyXy, you do realize that wings take faceoff's all the time in the NHL and then move back to wing after the draw right? You should know this. Dubinsky did it for years . It's almost like many people need to take a hockey 101 class. Wings who are good on draws skate a few feet over, then take the draw, then skate a few feet back to play wing. :sarcasm:

A good coach will always use his players strengths. Not having Boyle take faceoffs is beyond dumb. That's like putting Boyle on the PP. That's dumb. Oh wait. Torts does that also. To sum up. He doesn't use Boyle on faceoffs any longer when he wins 57% of his draws but puts him on the PP when he has 6 points. I hope his resume is ready to go for next season.

Ok, I gotta ask......

I see everyone here week after week bash Tortorella, " needs to be fired, he sucks, get rid of him right now" etc etc etc

Ok, then tell me who can come in here right now or for next season who can do better??? And don't give me a coach who's already committed to another team right now or resurrect a coach from the dead. I see all this negative crap on how this guy can't coach, but no one offers a realistic replacement. Anyone here smart enough to give this answer because I haven't seen a viable one yet. I like Torts, but I'm all for improvement anytime you can. Anyone??????

pierre mcguire. i stand by the belief that he'd coach us to a championship if guys in the room could get over his awkward- weird- sketchy- creepy- sex-offenderish- ness. the guy knows the sport even if he hasn't played it. he picks up on a lot of simple things that it seems like torts doesn't. he would be watching videos like torts-- but focusing on how to beat other teams, not how we should be playing. (i hate pierre. i'd probably never watch another press conference, but i think he's probably one of the most knowledgeable guys out there that might want to coach and he was the assistant coach to a cup winning team)

i await the flames.

/thread

boucher from tampa is avail still, no? idt he's an answer but he could hold til one becomes avail... there's the whole "in house" option of giving a new coaching opportunity(that i'm not for) leetch/graves/messier, etc.

a coaching change regardless of who could wake the room up. sometimes it's not about what's coached but how people receive it. (might counter that pierre idea lmao :))

I wanted the new Tampa coach but that didn't happen. My choice without question would be Dallas Eakins. He's turned into a fantastic AHL coach and the players love playing for him.

Why cant the Rangers poach someone like Detroit did with Babcock? NYRis supposed to be a premier franchise, entice some top level coaching and GM talent. Why do wemhave to pick from folks who are not employed only?

(Not advocating in season change here)

Try something new, something fresh, try Modo's head coach for the past two years, Ulf Samuelsson.

Because they're under contracts?

You can't bring in a rookie coach with a team like this.

I disagree.

I think a fresh approach from a rookie would be fine. This is not a team led by an egotist like Messier.

I would look to bring someone in that knows offence and can formulate an offensive scheme.

I semi joke about it, but I would look at Joey Mullen.

Has run the Flyers PP for a few years and done very well.

Coached a minor league team for a season with great results.

Get a solid Assistant COach that can game plan the defensive aspect, bring in Mullen to run the ship.

I'd have no problems bringing in a rookie HC. None at all.

I wouldn't mind a rookie coach but I just can't see Sather hiring one.

All the coaches he has hired in his tenure here have had prior coaching experience except for Trottier which did not work out so well. Too many of his hires are part of the old boys network.

I give you HFBoards, where if players can't complete passes it's the coaches fault, yet if they are in good position to receive passes it's in spite of the coach.

I could name 50 guys at different levels I would prefer over Torts. I believe guys are flat out worn down by his petulant ways. Other teams commentators say the joke around the NHL is the Rangers play blocky not hockey. This team wins inspite of Tort not because of him. When I see a guy like Cally giving a half effort and looking for shortcuts I shake my head. Tort has grinded the fun out of the game.

I just want to know why this head coach has a guy winning 57% of his draws and now thinks because he's on wing, he can't move him over to take faceoffs when the team is getting whipped in the dot. It's beyond absurd. Good strategy by Torts. Take your players best strength and don't use it. That's winning coaching.

Blockey! That's classic!!!

...Except last night the Rangers only blocked six more shots than the Isles.

And the game before that the Leafs had three times as many blocked shots.

Other teams commentators are pretty awful at analyzing the game, it seems.

You are exactly right.
