It's bad enough that people look at a roster that barely made the playoffs and got bounced in the 1st round and say it's fine...

But you're ignoring the elephant in the room. Chara's 40 with 1 season left before he's probably done. He's been holding together a defense that wasn't that great all year long, and their "depth" is a bunch of right handed #6's. A left handed top 4 defenseman is priority number one and there will never be a better time to get one with the expansion draft coming up. They're sitting on a ton of assets and they can't all fit in the lineup.

Up front they probably don't need a huge Landeskog type of addition with guys like Cehlarik, DeBrusk, Heinen, Czarnik, JFK, Senyshyn, (probably) Bjork, Gabrielle, etc coming up.

There's teams out there that are much better off in their own end than Bruins. That's why we have no worries of losing a defenceman like Quaider...I love his physical play but at 4 million per season and being injury prone, there's no way Vegas takes him..

If Sweeney signed Mcquaid to $4m a year, I'd still be picketing outside the Garden.

Tampa needs help on defense and might be willing to move Tyler Johnson, what would people give up?

No one we want to give up.

Unless their names are Charlie or Brandon, TB is likely not listening.

Krug may get it started, but that's counter productive.

If true that Kovalchuk wants back into the NHL - I'd pay a premium, even if he's lost a step.
Kovalchuk - Krejci - Backes would take a lot of heat off the 1st line and give the kids a few years to develop on the 3rd, 4th or AHL.

Would like them to resign Stafford and Moore as they're pretty much what you want out of 3rd and 4th line vets

Next year you could have your top 4 d-men
Chara - McAvoy
Krug - Carlo
for about $11M and all top 6 for under 15.

Gotta capitalize on that and spend some money (trade) for another top-flight winger.

I'd keep Backes on the third and play maybe Debrusk on that line but I agree, Kovi would be an excellent 2nd liner and give Krejci someone good to play with.

I can see Chara re-signing

Kovy would be awesome, but I don't think we have the cap space.

Chara needs to stay next season needs to help the influx of young dman
I think you can be comfortable that Chara will be in Boston next season to wind down his outstanding career.

He did a good job mentoring Carlo and McAvoy, and will continue with Mc next year to refine his talent to NHL standards.

Im not getting off the Oshie train. and I think Backes could help us get him (if he had a strong relationship with him which I think he did).

Marchand - Bergeron - Oshie is an upgrade over Pastrnak (for now) and this line would absolutely kill teams.

Cehlarik - Krejci - Pastrnak (They looked good in their games together, Cehlarik so snake bit)

DeBrusk - Backes - someone (Backes much better at C, DeBrusk is ready for the jump, Bjork would be nice)

Gabrielle - Kuraly - Acciari

I think its clear Vatrano can be a good player, but giving him 5mins a night in a nothing role won't help him, he needs to go play on the top line in Providence and get some seriouss reps, work on his defensive positioning and understand the game better. I think they have thrust him in the lineup and dont want to send him down cos they know he dominates it but its gonna be better for him getting 15/18mins a night in Prov than sit on the bench in Boston.

JFK - What to do, was there guarantees he is in the Bruins lineup? Was it just a one game promise to burn the year and he will go into top line C in Prov? He didn't look ready for the NHL from the limited time he got, he knows what to expect at least, hopefully they stick him in Providence for the year and he gets used to faster bigger bodies and can 'steel' himself for Boston's 3rd line C job in 2018/19.

Bjork - If he signs, I'd lock him as 3rd line RW out of camp, if he struggles, get some reps in Providence.

Gabrielle - I just put him there cos he has more upside than Blidh, I don't think he's ready yet but it wouldn't surprise me if he got 4th line duties out of camp.

DeBrusk - Hes ready.

Kuraly - I don't want to ride the hype train too much but his speed/forecheck and willingness to drive the net was a winner to me and I think hes earned a shot to stick as 4th line C.

Senyshyn - Needs at least a full season in the AHL unless he is literally tearing it up.

Free Agents -

Justin Williams along with Oshie are the biggest fish, can't see Washington letting BOTH walk.

Eaves - This years Beleskey?

Del Zotto is an interesting one, cheapish too.

Kevin Shattenkirk - Big no from me, and I think he will be surprised at the deal he actually gets. He won't get what teams would have been willing to sign him for before he went to WSH, id take that bet.

1. Marchand - Bergeron - Pastrnak

2. Palat/JVR - Backes - Oshie

3. Vatrano - Kuraly/JFK - Stafford

4. Acciari - Nash - Moore

OEL - Carlo

Chara - McAvoy

Krug - K. Miller

Rask
X

Krejci + something --> OEL

Oshie is UFA so we get him without trade.

JVR/Palat I do not know what another would get but it would be a good add in 2 line.

This is just a dream. :)
Reality: Someone bad trade will come
Krejci+ does not get you even close to OEL, especially if we are keeping McAvoy and Carlo

Wouldn't touch the D at this point. Charlo+KrugAvoy is has potential for a fine top-4. When Chara hangs his skates, there's Lauzon, Zboril and bunch of other guys on the wings.

Well this is kind of the point now. With the emergence of Carlo and McAvoy you have allegedly 3/4 of a top 4 going forward. You don't need every one of Lauzon/Zboril/Lindgren/C.Miller. You can be a little more flexible with these pieces now than hoarding them and hoping they pay off. May be time to look at moving someone.

Marchand Bergeron Pastrnak
Kovalchuk Krejci Backes

Thats one hell of a top 6

I would not want a 34 yr old player that will cost us 6.6 million a year or more.
There are better ways to spend our money.
I just looked and there are 3 teams left in the Stanley Cup Playoffs who's cap hit are in the top 10 in the league and 3 from the bottom 7.
Very interesting, with the right "good / young / cheap" players you can build a winner, albeit for a very short period of time 3-4 years.

What's the cap situation look like before they re-sign Pasta? Do they really have the cap space to make a run at a guy like Oshie?

It depends if you feel more confident about one of Zboril, Lauzon, Lindgren being a top 4 D or one of Cehlarik, Heinen, DeBrusk, Bjork or Gabrielle being a top 6 LW. Honestly, you want both a LW and a LD, but $$$ makes that impossible. I think either one works.

So rough estimates. That first line better kill people because it will cost you about 20.5-21 million a year to put it on the ice, and 2/3 will be locked up until 2024

Second line will likely be around 15 million, and that is with a complete wish an a prayer player at LW.

3rd line costs you just under 8 million, assuming someone is a low cost rookie

Add in buyouts, rookies for all depth and backup positions, etc. You are looking at a roster that is very close to the cap ceiling, and features 8-10 rookies

Haggerty mentioned that the Bruins offered JFK NHL-playing time next season specifically being the Bruins' 3C in exchange for signing an ELC before the season ended which Haggerty added, means game 4 was Spooner's last game as a Bruin. Here's the video: http://www.csnne.com/video/haggerty-which-bruins-should-be-back-next-season
