He’s been reading the game at an Adam Fox level lately. Not only that, but he’s executing his reads to great effect. Some of the passes he’s making have been Panarin like. Just over the moon to finally have a young, fun player to watch grow.

he played a phenomenal game today. as others have mentioned, easily coulda walked away with 4+ pts. i don't think i've ever seen a goalie give up 7 goals and also be able to say he played a really solid game.

Does most of the Laf hate on the main boards stem from him being drafted by the Rangers? If he was drafted by say the Kings or the Senators would everyone just say, "he's still young, he'll figure it out."

Like many others have mentioned, he's making plays that guys just aren't finishing. He could probably have 7-10 more points on the season if those get converted. I'm just glad Laviolette understands he wasn't drafted to be a grinder.

Laf on PP1 could start to make sense. Zib's shot from the left wall is stale. Swap him out for Laf, let Bread play the left wall and give laf the right wall. Gus/Foxy top of the umbrella.

It’s kind of crazy how few assists he has, it seems like he’s been setting up grade A chances all year for his teammates. A little puck luck and he’s pushing a ppg.

As long as he builds off this and continues to grow, I can’t wait to see where he is in 3 years.

You want to change the entire structure of a unit that is 30% on the year? The entire PP doesn't work with Panarin on the left. Now Trocheck can't one time plays in the bumper. Now Panarin isn't on his strong side to pass to the bumper or left wall. Mika is hitting the net on almost the exact same amount of shots he has his entire Rangers career (16.5-18 shots.60 at 5v4 in 4/6 years) except he's shooting 6% instead of his usual 20%.

Panarin already swaps out to take the left wall occasionally. Zib has been the weak point on that unit. 30% is insane but yeah, I think you could make a change if it is merited...and I think it is. If you think Laf cant make a 6 ft pass on his backhand to the slot for Troch to one time from the bumper, that would be a whole different issue.

There is no weak point on the unit. The key is the unit as a whole. It's not one guy. You change one thing you change everything. The only somewhat replaceable piece is actually Fox just because the point role is easier since no matter who is there they will have relatively the same responsibilities. Changing Kreider wouldn't change the structure either but it would just make it a lot worse when you have a far worse net front guy there. I probably would not call the guy who was 2nd in the league in 5v4 goals last year the weak point anyway just because he has happened to get off to a slow start.

Im a Habs fan who was really hoping we could snag Laff over the summer, along the lines of Caufield + 2nd.. but that ship has sailed...

What's up with Kakko, is he salvageable? i'll turn my focus to him now, looks like he is getting 4th line minutes..

even fox brings a different look and dynamic to the powerplay that gustafsson doesn't bring...it still is more dangerous with fox on it

The line he's on sucks for everyone on the line. None of them play well together and Bonino is an offensive blackhole (disregarding his seeing-eye turnaround shot goal today).
He started the season play well with Zibanejad and Kreider but that line couldn't finish to save its life, and then started getting stale as all of them seemed frustrated. With Chytil injured and Wheeler swapped up to the ZIbanejad line, Kakko basically got stuffed on the line of misfits where no one really seems to have a good feel or role with each other, and at this point he's lost all confidence in what he's doing.

Chytil centering Cuylle and Kakko might actually work real well and get that line going but we'll need him to get healthy first. Right now no one on that line really carries the puck that well and Chytil could do that, and does a better job trying to hold onto the puck and create in the offensive zone.

Kakko himself needs to just shoot and take the puck to the net. You can tell he's lost his confidence because he's barely trying to puck handle anymore. The line is ugly but there's not a lot to be done right at this second

Kakko is definitely salvageable. He's having a tough year as he kind of got caught in a game of numbers and never found chemistry with anyone, where as other lines clicked and kind of stuck. No reason to think he won't get back--at least--to the type of production he had last season.

I can understand the take about Fox’s role being more “generic” in nature, primarily from the handiness perspective. However, Fox’s execution of this role is second to none which makes him irreplaceable.

Majority of hockey is played at ES. As long as he continues to play with 10 and 16, I am over the moon. They are reading off each other really well, and you can tell Panarin likes Laf on that other side. Imagine the confidence that must give a guy like Laf, to be playing with a superstar that thinks you read the game the same as he does. Also, RW is perfect for him because he's elite on the backhand, like, very elite. PP1 has been together for four years. It isn't changing, nor should it.

I was on the road (f*** I95) for about 14 hours yesterday so I missed the game. Fell asleep last night watching the "encore"... What I saw wasn't great. Hahaha. BUT I did see that one shift where Laf threw three really good hits including two where he CRUSHED dudes.
When he finishes putting it all together he's going to be a pretty unique player, and EXACTLY what you need in the playoffs.
