But my point is, even if he's "less special," he shouldn't be this useless.
He's not useless, he's proven to be not useless. He's a young kid that needs to figure out what kind of a player he's going to be. He was f***ed the minute that lottery ball with the NYR logo popped up because this fanbase was so starved for the 10A no one was going to have any patience or perspective. Every major sport, except for baseball because they have like 12 drafts a year, has that possibility. Just because you get 1OA, it doesn't mean you're walking out of there with Sidney Crosby.

He should be progressing like Kakko is at the very least, and he's not.

I'm pro-Lafreniere, btw. This is the person who is saying I would play him in the top 6 and power play the rest of the year and I don't care if it means we lose a few more games.

I'm trying to identify the reasons for what appears to be backsliding so we can reverse course and continue down a positive road.

They can't pawn him off for less than a young star player. Obviously that's never going to be a MacKinnon level player but I'm not even sure I'd deal him straight up for Meier.

Dont lie to make a point. Meier is a young star player. The cap may make it impossible but that's exactly the player they should trade Lafreniere for if they are at that point.

I'm not lying... I'm not sure I make that trade.

I am not an expert on the guy. He has put up lots of points but I don't know if he's a centerpiece.

Which is what I'd want.

Elias Pettersson, ok, I'm game. And that's not a trade I'd have ever made prior to this season as I still expected Lafreniere to be a 90 point stud.

That being said Vancouver would never make that deal which is one reason why he's not going anywhere. The Rangers have no choice but to pawn him off for less than what they'll need going forward, or to hold onto him and hope he turns into it eventually.

Laff is a year behind Kakko and Kakko didn't look great last season.

True.

And I'm not rushing Lafreniere off the team either.

Dont imply that the rest of us are "rushing him off the team" when most of the Lafreniere trade conjecture is being open to a move if it helps us win a Cup this year and going forward. I know you want multiple cups after all.

I'm not implying you.

Some people in the Lafreniere thread are quite open about wanting him gone though.

There's no rush with Laf. He's the only real 1OA this team has ever had. He was the consensus #1 pick, so there's going to be no one to blame if he ultimately busts. You can't trade him and risk he breaks out with another team. You just can't. So, like it or not, we're going to see this through.

There’ll be plenty of blame , just not with the scouts for once

Okay, but since everyone feels he's already very shitty, is there more room for sliding or for rising?
Bottom line is they wont trade him for anything that will put egg on their faces if he breaks out. That would be worse for them than him fading out of the NHL in three years.
I don’t see a trade coming but I will say the idea of trading an asset before they prove to be worthless is logically sound. Right now, there is a chance Laf could develop and someone might think they would be the organization to make that happen. If I’m 2 years he’s still putting up 30 points I doubt as many organizations will want him.

I don’t want the Rangers to trade him. I think they can and should give him a one year bridge deal. That way they can dump him next season if it’s still a mess.

Bottom line for Laf- if he’s not doing any better next year he’s going to struggle to get additional contracts from the Rangers. It’s hard for the organization to sit across the table from him again and want to give him more chances.

Meier is a stud. Adding him makes this team so much more dangerous. 2nd in the league in shots/60. Great play driver, silky hands and plays a heavy game.

Where is the kid who fought Steven Stamkos after a playoff game last year? Or fought Pageau in similar instance last year. Lindgren got boarded last night and Lafreniere was right there with his head in the clouds. That to me is more concerning than the lack of production. Compete level is non-existent
It didn’t look like a bad or dangerous hit at all, that’s probably why. We all saw the same replay and wondered how he got hurt.

And we all know if he had jumped him and took a penalty for it that the same posters would be crying over a stupid penalty he took.

No sane person would complain if he took that kind of penalty. Defending a team mate isn't the same as taking a lazy penalty in the o-zone on a PP.

I disagree. A handful of posters have it out for him here that they will complain about ANYTHING.

But, you did say no “Sane” person ;)

PIM complaints are valid. Especially when they negate a PP. ESPECIALLY when you're a struggling 1OA that put up more PIMS than points last season.

I don’t like arguing with fellow fans and, contrary to what it may look like, I don’t dislike Laf. I just don’t have any eggs in that basket anymore - I’ll be thrilled to be wrong, and it isn’t a vendetta or dislike of the player - for me, he just does nothing and I’m not a believer anymore. I’ll leave it at that.

However, when we have our next 1OA pick (in 2040, because why not), this guy will not disappoint. Promise. Although redden up those cheeks and throw a beard on him and he’s looking like Laf most games in this pic
