I don't think Laf looks slow. Watch him skate through the neutral zone with the puck, he's pulling away from guys and putting distance. His skating looks good.
His offensive szone positioning seems off which is probably partly because he's bouncing around lines and partly learning the NHL. It makes you look "slow" when you're constantly trying to get to a spot on the ice because you weren't there already and you missed the puck
For sure, that is why "slow" is in quotes because it's an illusion. Excited to see him develop, we are lucky to have him.

I’d also take into account that his linemates haven’t exactly been worldbeaters at even strength, and Laf is not with them on the powerplay.

He looked quite good in his first two games less so in his last two. He will be ok. Let's give him steady line mates and a steady position to play

Matthews got 4 his first game! The solution is to double shift him.

But in reality, like Kakko last year, he appears "slow". So far, Kakko doesn't appear as "slow" this year, and Laf probably won't by mid year. No one should be worried.
Regardless of what Matthew’s did in his first game, no one should be worried

yeah for the love of god it's time for the coaches to figure this out

He's not gonna do anything under Quinn. He creates the worst environment for young players to work on their game. He doesn't even have patience. Laf, Kakko and Chytil should have just been left alone in the third line and they would have been fine.

I know he's just awful with young players. Guys like fox, deangelo, buch, Lindgren, chytil all having varying degrees of breakouts... irrelevant.

It's those 2 young 19 year olds who aren't producing..that's where he's failing.

Sigh

There was a play in the 1st against Buff, puck dumped in behind the net on the left side. I think Howden is chasing it and engages with the Buff defender and loses his balance before even getting to the boards. Lef is near the left hash marks, 5 feet off the boards and 10 feet away from the Buff forward .Once it becomes clear Howden is going to end up on his ass Laf still stays in his 'ready to receive a pass' position instead of covering the Buff forward. The Buff D grabs the puck, passes to his open outlet on the boards that Laf is juuuust starting to head over to, and Buff is on their way. Laf needs to realize 'hey we're not winning this puck' and should cover the buff forward on the boards asap. Because of the wasted second Laf is late getting to cover the Buff forward along the boards and he tries to get in the passing lane, which fails. Buff gets another easy breakout. If he had recognized that we had 0 chance of winning that puck behind the net he could have pressured the Buff player along the boards before the puck even arrived and would make life much more difficult for Buffalo.

This is shit we were told he would be good at- smarts, IQ, etc. What gives?

I think Howden is chasing it and engages with the Buff defender and loses his balance before even getting to the boards. Lef is near the left hash marks, 5 feet off the boards and 10 feet away from the Buff forward, in position for a pass if the puck battle is won by NYR. However, once it becomes clear Howden is going to end up on his ass Laf still stays in his 'ready to receive a pass' position. The Buff D grabs the puck, passes to his open outlet on the boards and Buff is on their way. Laf needs to realize 'hey we're not winning this puck' and should cover the buff forward on the boards who is waiting to receive the outlet pass. Because of the wasted second Laf is late getting to cover the Buff forward along the boards and he chooses instead to pull up and tries to get in the passing lane, which is now his only option, and it fails. Buff gets another easy breakout. Once our guy is on one skate with his stick straight in the air and falling down, Laf needs to recognize that the play is dead and to get on his horse and cover the outlets. If he had realized that we had 0 chance of winning that puck he could have pressured the Buff player along the boards before the puck even arrived and would make life much more difficult for Buffalo.

The story here is that you don't judge players based off of one section of a shift.

Keep in mind that usually a #1 draft pick has a full training camp and plays in 4 of the 6/7 preseason games that an NHL team plays. Even though preseason is a step below a regular season NHL game, it's still at a much higher pace than a Q game.

Honestly we are basically looking at uncharted territory here and he hasn't had the ramp up that previous 1st overall picks have had over the past decade. Let's see where he's at by game 30.

Chytil was iced by Quinn too. What are you talking about? He still is.

Buchnevich took 5 years to get to this point.

I'll give you the defensemen which he had no choice but to play out of pure need and thus they developed. The fact we have veterans that are never held accountable on the forward side and even the defensive side lets be honest is the reason the young guys dont get ice time.
