Maybe it will take him at least 5 games to become the franchise player we all thought he would be?
After four games, his previous projection was Sidney Crosby while his new projection is Alexandre Daigle.

Let's let the Kings have #2OA and #1OA, why not.

Vally really oversold him. I was expecting more along the lines of Stamkos or Tavares (point wise) — but there’s still a ways to go. Let’s just focus on the trend.

stamkos didnt score a point until his 8th game

then he scored 4 points in 2 games

and then he went another 8 games without a point

I’m talking about point totals assuming a uniform distribution. As you said, SS was quite streaky, and maybe that’s what well see from Laf. I just want to see him succeed.

well you're coming to the conclusion that he was "oversold" 4 games into his career lol

I think the only thing holding him back right now is speed of the game and confidence.

Regarding speed of the game, he hadn’t played a game at all in how long? And then he jumps straight to the NHL from juniors but with no preseason and a long lay off? He’s in the right places, he’s showing all the right qualities, he’s just a tick behind. He finds open space, good read, gets the puck, you can see he’s thinking shot and then a defender gets a stick on his stick or closes the lane just before he gets it off. He’ll adjust to that.

As far as confidence, I think once he gets on the sheet and gets the monkey off his back he’ll be a bit more assertive. Lots of pressure on the 1OA with big expectations. Once he gets the monkey off his back AND adjusts to the speed difference, I think he’ll look very good. He’s already noticeable, so I’m pretty confident it’s coming. I could see his last 35-40 games being pretty epic.

Laf and Kakko were both deemed exceptionally "NHL ready" when they were drafted, going into the season all the experts said they would be insant impact players. Now after year one for Kakko the new consensus is he wasn't NHL ready last year. Starting to see the same things being said about Laf now.

Laf looked real good games 1 and 2 and we were all marveling at how much of a vet he looked like out there. Now he's playing like a scared rookie.

Common denominator = Quinn.

But Kirby Dach was thought to take 1-2 years to make the show as well

While I’m firmly of the belief that Quinn is not an NHL coach - maybe a very solid assistant in a development role, but not bench boss - I actually hold pretty fast to my post about Laf above. I see the readiness. He’s feeling more pressure each time he doesn’t get on the board and his timing isn’t there for the NHL game, but he looks “more ready” than rookie KK did.

I saw a few flashes and emotion on opening night — which I loved. Hasn’t stood out to me since. Admittedly, I missed the second Islanders game, but I otherwise haven’t seen him get or produce a breakaway, produce a meaningful scoring chance for a teammate, make a big hit, take a dangerous shot, execute a difficult pass, or find ways to open space for himself or teammates. Either play him on LW (move CK or AP to RW) or send him back to juniors. He’s a kid and learning the NHL game; this isn’t the time to teach him a new position if you’re planning on giving him minutes. If there are no minutes available here, give him minutes elsewhere, or he just won’t develop. He hasn’t done anything to make me think “this kid is gonna be a star.” I’m sure he’ll develop just fine. I just thought the impact would have been more immediate — but that’s my fault for buying into the hype.

Put him back on the left side. Let him play with Fil and Kakko and actually give that line minutes

The common denominator of an 18 & 19 year old not being ready for the NHL is their coach? So another coach would have made Kakko into a 50 point player last year snd made Lafreniere record hat tricks after 4 games?
It’s impossible to prove but I believe if they were drafted by anyone else they would be killing it.

Matthews got 4 his first game! The solution is to double shift him.

But in reality, like Kakko last year, he appears "slow". So far, Kakko doesn't appear as "slow" this year, and Laf probably won't by mid year. No one should be worried.

I don't think Laf looks slow. Watch him skate through the neutral zone with the puck, he's pulling away from guys and putting distance. His skating looks good.
His offensive szone positioning seems off which is probably partly because he's bouncing around lines and partly learning the NHL. It makes you look "slow" when you're constantly trying to get to a spot on the ice because you weren't there already and you missed the puck
