Carrier was on IR, but he's cleared to return to play.

Carrier is 5'11 and signed for 3 years at almost 4 millions...

Barron sucked, but I would have taken picks.

Acquiring picks in deals is always nice. But in truth, Habs needed a body who can be in the line-up game in and game out, particularly a RD.

And Barron would not have gotten Habs picks in plural. If it was a pick, he'd get them a 4th round pick at best, but most likely a 5th.

I do like that it didn't take too long for them to say: Barron was not what we hoped for let's get the most value we can for him.

Not really a fan of another undersized D as a return but he's likely better defensively than Barron.

No no, not likely better. He is better defensively. A lot better, in fact.

We needed a steady RD defender and we got that. Matheson and Hutson are more than capable of generating the offense from the back end, and then you have Guhle and Xhekaj who both have good first passes and aren’t inept offensively.

I hope they learned some lessons here, after watching Barron each time he was sent to Laval, he mostly looked like total shit, just terrible decisions in his own end. So how is it they felt after trading for him that he was ready for the NHL, cause there is no way someone that looks that clueless in their own end has any business in the NHL at 21.

That said he does have some decent offensive skills but just way too many mistakes in his own end. I am surprised but glad that Hughes was willing to admit the mistake of trading for him.

They have two 1sts, two 2nds and two 3rds in this coming draft. That’s without trading Savard, Armia and Dvorak who are all surely gone. It’s time to upgrade the team, what are more picks going to do?
Do we have to spend 4 millions per year for 2.5 years on a 5'11 173 lbs 3rd pair D to dump Barron?

With Savard leaving you need a veteran D that can play the PK and eat minutes. You can’t just have a team of U23 defencemen with the only veteran being Matheson. That would be a disaster. Carrier is a good player
How do we know for sure they'll trade Savard? The guy is a rock on defense. Everyone is entitled to their opinions but if we trade him to bring a guy like Mailloux up we'll feel it big time. I believe it would be a huge step backwards.

I don’t get it man.

People want picks but they want the rebuild to be over? As you mentioned we got lots of good picks this year, we needed a steady RD to complement our offensive LDs and we got that.

Buys time for Reinbacher. It’s a good trade.

Then we should trade Mailloux as well because he is and always has been shit in his end.

We should have kept Kovacevic.

Because shit happens?

Nothing is linear in a rebuild.

Sure, I understand it. I just hate the price paid for Barron. At the time it looked good, but I was relying on what I saw in Barrons D-1 and some patchy viewings from his draft year. Posters said the pro scouting failed there and they were right. Every viewing this year I've come away thinking how dumb and soft Barron is. If you're giving away a leader like Lehkonen, make sure the cost is the right one.

Mailloux has been better offensively by a decent amount and with him missing 2 years of key development time to go with his past, I don't think he would ever hold the same value in a trade. Would be very risky to move him imo unless of course a team wants to overpay but with his history I doubt it.

Barron was really, really bad, but I'm still surprised they traded him away after what they gave up for him. Hughes is also leaning heavily within the ex-Quartexx clients and I'm not sure I like it. The one thing I wonder though is... why trade Kovacevic then ? What was the point only to trade Barron later ?
I guess he figured Kova was replaceable and wanted to give Barron one more chance. Giving Barron 2 years instead of one was the bigger headscratcher. At the time of the trade, it was Barron/Struble/Harris/Mailloux/Reinbacher/Xhekaj and Kovacevic all competing for the bottom pair. Barron never capitalized, Struble is having a horrible year, Harris got traded because that's who Trevor Timmins (lol) targetted for Columbus, Mailloux's defensive struggles are still severe, Reinbacher got injured for the year, and Xhekaj took the last spot. All of a sudden defensive depth was a need.

I kind of wish we got Fabbro as well, still not sure why we didn't take him if Hughes was done giving Barron chances.
