Out of every deal HuGo have made so far, it's the one I'm the most skeptical about. There might not be much upside to Romanov's game, but if he fulfills his potential, he's going to be a mobile, physical #4D. I'm not sure Kirby Dach will amount to more than that.

The question you have to ask yourself is 1 year ago (summer 2021) would you have traded Kotkaniemi for Romanov? The answer for most fan is probably no. So technically it's at worst an interesting "gamble".

Dach replace summer 2021 Kotkaniemi. He is half a year younger and was drafted a year after JK so in term of pro development he is 1 year behind. At minimum Dach has the same upside JK had one year ago.

While i was not a big fan of JK i must say replacing what we lost in JK with a prospect like Romanov is not terrible. Do i take this "gamble"? No. I think both JK and Dach settle as 3rd line center. But i'n not mad KH decided to take it.

And they didn't stop there. With the Monahan trade, they further addressed the center depth. An opportunity presented itself and they weren't passengers.
I think the opportunity at a first rounder just for taking in one year of the bloated salary of a player having suffered multiple significant surgeries, was the key. If Monahan can stay healthy, it’ll be a bonus let alone resume where he left off before his surgeries or even continue to play center.

With the team going nowhere this season, this is the perfect environment to experiment with a Monahan.

Agreed because Romanov has proven much more than Dach
Yeah, Romanov has proven to be durable and healthy.

Dach, not so much but it was a significant freak injury — it’s not as if he’s injury-prone.

Dach's numbers are very low. He shouldn't have that much leverage in negotiations.

Before the Romanov contract I was around 2 years at $2.25M. Slightly less than what Chytil got last year. After the Romanov contract, I think it's going to be 2 years around $2M. Less than $2M? Very possible and they might agree to 1 year but I think Hughes avoids that cause if both Dach and Caufield have break out years, he has a big headache on his hands.

Best to overlap Dach and Caufield at this point. I'm thinking 2 or 3 year term and 2 years is probable. 2 years at $2M is fair.

I don't consider it a gamble cause it's not like Romanov had a wicket break through last season. He had a good step forward in a really bad year where even a guy like Hudon looked good in the past.

Some fans are dwelling that Romanov reaches his max ceiling and Dach reaches his lowest. I bet the same posters though Romanov would get $4M this season.

Not like I think Romanov turns into a journey type D like Beaulieu but what makes Romanov better than him at the same age of 21/22? I would say Romanov is better in his own end but by how much? Points potential seems similar.

I think Romanov's value might have been the highest at the point of the trade. And for those who remember, I've been a fan of Romanov since we drafted him and we seen what he can do at the WJC (back to back years). Beaulieu don't have that kind of resume.

Wil be interesting to see what Romanov can do and how much better he can be from where he was last year. We turned a early 2nd to a top 3 pick who still has loads of offensive potential at center.

At this point what is he really a #4D or a #5D ?

At 2.5M its a good deal for the Isles
#4. He is giving so many hit (227), and this stats is valuable imo. I have doubt about his offensive flair, but I have always appreciated those player with a large numbers of hits.

Dach got big potential, looking forward to seeing him play

This. Dach has been progressing, all be it at a moderate pace. I think the Isles would have been better off trading the pick or whatever for Dach, rather than Romanov.

Right now, I'd have to say Dach looks like he will be at least a 2c. All though I still think there is room for him to become a 1C and even pass Suzuki, as unlikely as some might think that is.

While Romanov.... he's a sturdy 2nd pair guy. But I still honestly don't think he was worth trading a 1st round pick for.

Just like this years deal for Horvat.....

Lou just keeps trading away the future, for a "present" in which the Isles aren't winning a Stanley Cup. And I don't think Romanov and Horvat put them over the top. They need more offensive juice definitely. But then, trading Raty and a 1st for that offense in a year where the Isles are unlikely to win anything..... I just don't get it. Especially if Horvat isn't extended, but I have to at least assume right now he will be otherwise that was the worst trade possible.

Guess we will see how the future plays out. But I think Dach is doing just fine now for the Habs. He's clearly worlds better than KK ever was. And he's still developing. I have a feeling he's going to be a late bloomer, and within the next year or two, will have a relatively late breakout. How high he flies, can't say. But the potential to be a 1C is certainly still there as far as I can tell.

Not sure if counting HIT matters as much in NHL compared to fantasy. Sure, Romanov is a physical force out there. But without adding offense and superb D, that can be found elsewhere for less than a 1st round pick.

This is really irrelevant but NYI fans are not overly impressed with Romanov this year. I really don't care if he does well or not but worth noting.

Romy is doing as expected he projected as a ~25pts physical PK specialist. He will shine for them in the playoffs if they make it. Probably buddy with Sorokin too.

Already beat last year best 13pts with 15pts and 27 more games to play.

The guy not trending in this trade is Nazar due to injuries.

How long can his body hold up throwing that many hits year after year?

Did someone suggest Romanov was a #2 dman? lol, cmon was never projected as that even by the diehard homers here.
No. But he is often playing with their #1 D man Dobson.

I'd rather have Romanov than Edmundson or even Matheson. But Dach is proving me wrong, and I am glad about it.
