Well you pretty much sums up the trade.

Hits and blocked shots 2nd pair defenseman vs a potential 2nd (maybe 1st liner) center.
Potential is the key word here. One has proven he can play 20 minutes per night and the other is still living off of potential.

Do you think there is a chance they want to sign Dach long term?

There is always a chance but the AAV needs to be agreed on. Would he take a 6 year deal at $3M? Doubt it. Would the Habs pay him $4M+ on a long term deal at this point? Doubt it.

Bridge or one year deal is what they will come to terms on. I guessed that KK would get the Chytil bridge but the offersheet came. Now I'm going to try again with Dach... it's probably going to be 2 years at $2.3M ish. Maybe less and they agree on a one year deal at $2M

Not based on what he has accomplished which is very little. Everything points to a 2 year bridge deal.

Agreed. More or less than what Chytil got?

Mildly surprised Dach hasn't signed yet. It's not like he has any leverage or past performance to fall back on.
I think there is only 800K left on the salary cap, maybe they try to make some space, maybe discussion are not going well with Dach. He probably looks at a long term deal while Hughes wants a 2 years 4M bridge deal. I am just surprised we don’t have any news on that at all

Arpon Basu said both parties were busy since the draft, they just started talking about his contract so should be soon.

Out of every deal HuGo have made so far, it's the one I'm the most skeptical about. There might not be much upside to Romanov's game, but if he fulfills his potential, he's going to be a mobile, physical #4D. I'm not sure Kirby Dach will amount to more than that.

Kirby Dach plays a completely different position. The ones who made Romanov "expendable" are Guhle, Barron, Harris, Norlinder & Xhekaj among others.

And I put expendable in quotations because I don't think Habs were looking to trade Romanov. But the fact they have a lot of depth coming up on D, they felt like they can swallow trading him.

So at the time of the trade, they moved out someone in a position where Habs have a lot of depth to address an area where they don't (and with the acquisition of Monahan, they now addressed the center position even more).

I don’t think the criticism with picking Tkachuk came from him playing the right way. He was viewed as a “safe pick” with good but not great upside. Our franchise was starved for a potential star center. We were coming off a brutal year with Drouin playing as a number 1 centre and 5 years of Desharnais before that. It’s not really surprising a lot of people weren’t thinking clear and were willing to take a massive gamble on Kohtkaniemi.
Management back then drafted by need.

Current management too were faced with a need at center this summer but they drafted who they believed was the best player available even if he isn’t a center.

They added a center during the draft, via other means.

It’s a good thing Bergevin didn’t get his way and get Glass instead of Suzuki in that Pacioretty deal. It’s hard to imagine the team he left us with could look that much worse without that move.

And they didn't stop there. With the Monahan trade, they further addressed the center depth. An opportunity presented itself and they weren't passengers.

In hindsight, getting Suzuki was a blessing since Glass has had injuries that hurt his development.

But at the time of the trade, Glass had finished his season in the WHL with 102 pts in 64 GP. Suzuki finished his season in the OHL with 100 pts in 64 GP that same year. In the playoffs, Glass had 13 pts in 12 GP and Suzuki had 12 pts in 11 GP.

So really they were both Grade-A prospects that had identical seasons.

I don't think it's fair to throw that on MB. Lord knows there are countless other things we can use to show how much MB screwed up. But I wouldn't look at him asking for Glass first as something to criticize him for.

Agreed because Romanov has proven much more than Dach

I'm surprised Romanov and his agent went 3 years at that rate. 1 year would have made more sense. If he takes more steps forward, that's one very good contract and the last 2 season will be very high cap savings.
