Dime a dozen 3rd line forward in the NHL. He's definitely getting traded for a pick this off-season to make room for Rielly's extension.

Problem is...Chiarelli is out of the league...who is going to give you something worthwhile for him?

Notice all 3 players that Dubas signed to medium term contracts that were supposed to be 'value' deals all flopped pretty much? Kappy, Johnsson and Kerfoot have not lived up to their premature deals in any meaningful way.

You don’t think Kapanen, whom we got a 1st and B prospect for and has been a fairly productive top 6 player for the pens, is worth his contract?

You also don’t think teams will see value in Kerfoot, a 35-40 point versatile W/C who is owed 750k next season?

I get you have a Dubie hate boner, but at least try a bit harder than this sad attempt.

Nope...I don't think any of those deals are 'value' deals...and that is what Dubas told everyone when he signed them. A value deal is where a player exceeds his cap number...do you see any of those 3 exceeding their cap?

Come on man, for Dubas classic overpay of three whole million dollars I'm expecting at least PPG+ and a couple shutouts filling in as backup goalie. At least!

Kerfoot and Kapanen easily exceed their cap.

What do you think you’re getting for 3-4 mill?

Kapanen has 34 points in his last 48 games. What do you expect from a 3.2M player? Johnsson had a poor year last year, but is off to a great start this season. and Kerfoot is a top 9 forward, with the added asset of being extremely versatile, which, these days, 3.5M is the value for that sort of player.

So I agree, that Johnsson and Kerfoot are fair deals, but trying to argue Kapanen is also not a value deal, is pretty nonsensical.

Kapanen will likely get in the 5M range his next contract.

That is only 6.2M of the 7.5M. Add in the expected 1M cap increase, and you are pretty much there though.

We also need to factor in Campbell's extension however.

It's an additional 1% of the cap for our best defenseman making 7.5M. It looks contained considering our back-end spending has been quite frugal. The only question mark salary wise is Muzzin and he's not exactly breaking the bank on term and cap hit.

You've gotta think Kerfoot is gone in the off-season. We can't afford to give a depth player like him $3.5 million. The only question is whether they get anything of value in return, if it's a pure dump, or if we have to tie something of value to offload.

More than most here, I try and get into the minds of other teams / GMs when trying to analyze Leafs players, rather than being consumed by our own circle-jerk of hype.

And with Kerfoot... I kind of struggle.

On one hand, do they view Kerfoot similarly to you? : a versatile forward that can play in a bunch of different situations, through different scenarios in your lineup, and on special teams?

Or, on the other hand, like me? : a forward who doesn't have a proper, consistent role or position on the team because he doesn't do anything extremely well?

Epic means long, not good/great.

He keeps you in the offensive zone extremely well. What the rest of that line does with that zone time is up to them, but they at the very least have a pretty good shooter/passer who will hound the puck on the boards and take abuse to keep it in. Works on a shutdown line, works on an offensive line, works on either special team.

HFboards, and fans in general, get excited about prospects, star players, or at least, players with some star-like qualities.

Kerfoot obviously is the opposite of that. He's good at basically everything, but great at nothing. He can play basically anywhere in your middle 6 -- offensive role, checking role, doesn't matter. He can kill penalties.

He's not a guy that's going to get a bunch of fans on HFboards excited -- because fans want "another goalscorer" or "another playmaker" or "more size"...however for a team that's perhaps a little shallow up the middle of the ice; or is looking to develop a young centre, he's literally a perfect fit.

Obviously, given the immense offensive talent that Matthews & Tavares hold, and not wanting to have to strike out on a repeat of the Riley Nash waste; they've made a concerted effort to go all-shutdown for their 3rd line with David Kampf; so Kerfoot hasn't fit into that... but I wouldn't be so suprised to see Toronto trying to keep Kerfoot through his deal, simply because they don't have the luxury of their 3rd line centre being able to step into a top 6 role.
