Couldn't find my thread about him from two or so years ago.

What is there to say, really? He's such a bland player. Not horrible or anything but so unremarkable and unexciting. Does not do anything for me personally.

When he scores a big highlight reel goal (that will be the day), we can celebrate it in this thread.

He's actually been one of the better playoff performers for this club. I like him as insurance for JT and Matthews injuries but if they're healthy, I have a hard time putting him anywhere in this line up.

It's not his fault he's being forced into a role he's not meant for. If he was just a consistent bottom 6 guy no one would care, he just gets forced up the line up every now and then and he's not up for it. It's like when we misused Bozak/Phaneuf. Totally fine and serviceable players but they weren't even close to being true 1C/1D.

we need to find values in players like him

gotta go

Bunting-Matthews-Nylander
XXX-Tavares-Kase
Engvall-Kerfoot-Marner
Simmonds-Kampf-Spezza

until we get the XXX figured out; I'd put Spezza there with Tavares and put Ritchie on the 4th line

you need 11 AAV players to raise the game of other players so that we can have three lines going creating match-up problems. Top 3 lines with avg 18 mins per game (keeps everyone fresh) with 4th line taking about 5 to 6 mins. From the three lines whichever line is HOT that night gets more than 18 mins for 19/20 mins.

If your 11 AAV players cannot raise the game/level of other players on your team then you don't need that 11 AAV player IMO.

I'd be okay with Bunting-Kerfoot-Nylander. That's where I saw Kerfoots real usage and became content with him stsying. This line is money especially because Nylander can't be stopped if it's not the other teams best defensive unit. That's not a knock on Nylander, only elite players have this trait. He literally is in his own tier on the ice when this line is together and Keefe gives him first line usage now when it's all said and done. He was often promoted to the stack line for some shifts, PP1 and then his own line which he's the boss for and gets to do whatever he wants with the puck.

Kerfoots underlying numbers throughout his whole career confirms the eye test as well in that he will adapt his game to support Nylander being the boss of the line. Nylanders skill game is unique. People generalize it to 50% cap spent on the same thing....it's not true. None of them have the same playing style. Kerfoots playing style is meant more for Nylander and the greasy rat is the missing piece to the puzzle.

Kerfoot is pretty meh otherwise. Jack of all trades who doesn't stand out in anything when he's in bottom 6. Doesn't gel with tavares marner or matthews either.

He's not flashy. And he is overpaid at 3.5 million. But there are lots of more pressing problems on this team than Alex Kerfoot. He is just quietly a responsible player, and hey, he was one of 4 Leafs who showed up in the playoffs last year (the other 3 being Spez, Campbell and Willy). I wish Kerfoot was making 2-×2.5 a year, because then we would really appreciate what he does.

Even when they're at their best. I tend to agree Nylander is the only one who made Kerfoot useful. Useful as in we'd care if he left. Kerfoot-Tavares-Nylander doesn't work. Has to be just Nylander and his minions.

One of the reasons I thought the Sam Bennett reclamation project would have been nice is Bennett gives you some bite and seems wired to enjoy the playoffs. Kerfoot is a vanilla player who plays a third line role and can be pressed into second line duty, but the problem is Dubas also likes his fair share of vanilla-ish players everywhere who kind of give you a lot of bland heaping of averageness. Over the past couple of years we've seen Brooks, Amadio, Vesey, Agostino, Boyd. So the lineup starts feeling really devoid of defining characteristics and entertainment value.

I agree Kerfoot is one of the most forgettable players I can (still) remember. Not a bad player, never really hurts us and has been productive in the playoffs. He is just so unexciting...could score a hat trick and no one would notice.

We want more defensive responsible players that actually work hard and get involved... Kerfoot is that kind of player. He's very noticeable when he's forechecking or fighting along the boards.

He's not as skilled as we thought he'd be probably by now and that is very disappointing, but he has completely evolved his game from being a soft PP specialist to a very good 2-way versatile player. The way he was able to fill into big big shoes in the playoffs last season and actually elevated his game was nice.

Is he replaceable? Most players are so yeah... of course. His production has stagnated and he's not a threat offensively. But I don't think he would be "easily" replaceable for his versality and efficiency defensively.

This is a complete myth. Nylander completely carried him.

How can something literally watchable on video be a myth? He was one of the only ones fighting for the puck and sacrificing the body...

The real "yawn" are the fans that say they dont care about anything until the playoffs, yet suddenly seem awfully concerned regular season points

He was like that last year and excellent in the playoffs.

I'm good with him.
