Alex Nylander is ONLY 21, has steadily and consistently improved in the AHL and up to the NHL. 4 points in 12 games doesn't sound like much but a .33 PPG winger at 21 (yes I know, small sample) is nothing to scoff at. If he had not been an 8th overall and not cost what he cost, any hockey fan would be ecstatic to have him as a prospect.
Is he better than his brother right now? No! Willy is on another tier. But Alex is also younger, and his playing style takes longer to peak.
If Alex was 1.5-3 years older and was putting up those stats, yeah I'd feel like you got fleeced. But 21 is very young developmentally and for his playing style and he's got SO much to grow into and has CONSISTENTLY IMPROVED.
Honestly, I was sad to give him up. He has above average but not quite elite speed (few players really do) his shot and especially hockey sense is extremely underrated. I don't see someone who's not trying, he's a player that only plays best with some confidence and has lacked much. He has the ability to accurately pass the puck to the right person at the right time, and can get the pass through.
Mittelstadt was on Sheary's line basically all season but it wasn't until Nylander joined their line when Sheary had consistently been able to get more chances when they've been together. No coincidence he added value to that line. NO ONE on the second line could get it to Sheary before Nylander. (It was extremely frustrating to watch). He's not an elite player but he is an elite prospect, to put it that way.
He's got ALL the tools EXCEPT physicality, the sky is the limit for him. He looked lost and borderline uninterested his first two years because he was rushed and his confidence was shot. He's made an effort in the AHL this season to be better defensively. What I noticed that last season was that he was the first player on the back check when possession in the O-zone changed to the other team while anticipating the play/transition very well. His father was an NHLer, and Alex has elite hockey sense and instincts. He was taught the game right.
I see no reason why he wouldn't get at least 50 points if he started on Eichel's wing this season. I had him pegged on the first line. The thing about Alex though, is that he can only produce with other elite talent. A very complementary player and will probably never drive a line any time soon. If he's with Kane he can conceivably get 50-60 pts realistically within at least a couple years or soon as next year with Chicago's excellent development program.
Did I mention he moves through traffic well, is shifty and nimble, skates very well with elite acceleration, is very hard to get the puck off of him, he always seems to make the right plays, is one of the better young stick-handlers in the entire NHL and has an elite hockey sense and pedigree?
He just should have went to juniors his d+1 season to bulk up and learn professional hockey.
There is NO reason why he still can't be better than his brother, as crazy as that may seem now for people who've bought into the Nylander sucks narrative. Some players just need longer to develop. It's not that he's a bust, he just hasn't proved that he's not one yet. I feel he will be a very good if not elite player.
This will be a classic "win-win" trade.
Who the Sabres got improves them long-term too. You had a lot of good young d-men.
Sorry for this randomness I was just super bored to kill time and wanted to know how Hawks fans think of him, I'd honestly be surprised if he doesn't get 50-70 pts once in his career if he's playing with elite talent. He has PPG potential ceiling on a top line.
