Not sure he carries any positive value at this point. Soft, one dimensional, missed a lot of time last year to injury and now just 2 goals in 9 games this year? With another 2.5 years left on his deal.

Wouldn't get any positive value but maybe a swap for another similarly struggling player. Like a Peyton Krebs or maybe a Kaapo Kakko(Though he's having a decent start to his year so maybe not).

One "bigger" scenario I could see playing out would be a Newhook+ for Zegras+ type of deal.

Why, exactly, do the Ducks entertain that offer? Zegras may be traded at some point but it’s not for a downgrade. It’ll be in a package for an upgrade, a player who fits whatever Verbeek is trying to build, or for a different position of need. Newhook is none of those.

I would loose him on the waivers and it would be the happiest day of my life. It's a AHLer that shouldn't be in the NHL

Habs aren't dealing him. They acquired him for a reason. He's either going to blossom and prove them sage in dealing for him, or he'll play his way off into a journeyman career that takes him to many largely non-exotic places.

He's not a "bad player". But he's not a "good player" either. He's just...a player who plays. Empty uniform guy. Doesn't terribly hurt you if he's cheap enough, but doesn't really help you gain much traction at all either.

Not really sure what he's good at. But he's also not glaringly awful at most things either. Avs scouting staff seemed to have a real knack for finding those sorta guys for a bunch of years there.

General rule around NHL should be to not trade for prospects drafted by Avs.

A Kaapo Kakko swap would be interesting, but I'm not sure Rags offer it plain.

His value is arguably low, just how low?

A 5th seems to be cynical at best.

Frustrating player. Can pop at times, showing speed through the neutral zone, decent hands, solid work ethic and he can put together partial season runs where he will grab 15 points in 25 games and you’ll think to yourself…”eh, not a band youngish middle six type”.

But he’s not a shot generator, his vision isn’t great, he has no real standout traits aside from at times his speed and he’s an absolute zero from a physical standpoint.

Habs fans here can argue otherwise - and this is not meant as a “victory lap” for the Avs who were the ones who originally used a fairly high first rounder on him (he’s not even the worst guy the Avs have picked in that range considering Jost is basically Newhook with zero speed) - but the complaints you read on the Habs board about Newhook are the exact same ones you would’ve read on the Avs board two years ago.

He’s a JAG at this point…even filler players can have runs of good form but there’s not a ton to suggest he’s got more in the locker than that.

A player swap seems the most likely way to move on quickly if that’s the goal, although I don’t think it’ll be for something as glamorous as Zegras, flawed and underperforming as he is.

Dude is gonna need to carve out a career as the 6th best player in a mediocre top 6 or AHL call up. He’s probably the 192nd best scoring forward in the NHL and I doubt that changes.

2019 draft class - drafted 16th

Games played- 6th
Points - 10th
Goals - 8th

Newhook is 23...
Cap hit (of all players 24U) - 39th

Zero chance KH moves him for anything short of a steep overpayment, considerably more than the picks it cost to get him.
I don't think this means as much as you think it means. He entered the league 1 year after being drafted. 3 of the top 15 were dman.

And until the last couple of seasons, there were a decent amount of those players viewed as nothing players going forward, or at the very least guys who haven't taken that next step. We're starting to see some of the players perform like 1st round player and contribute for their team. While Newhook is still young and can definitely turn it around carving out a good career, but entering a league 1 year after being drafted, and then raving about where he ranks among a draft class where some just started to put it together doesn't carry the same punch.

His value has only dropped since KH overpaid for him the first time.

Here we go. It seems like everyone in Montreal is allergic to depth.

No, Newhook isn’t a top 6 forward. He’s better suited on the third line and second PP but what (Habs) fans needs to understand is you need players like that to win. Not everyone can or should be a top 6 and it doesn’t mean they don’t have any value if they aren’t superstars.

Newhook isn’t going anywhere.

That's a great point. Often we are always shooting for the next great thing when a bird in hand...

Really ? Doesn’t Dach have a ton more potential ? Newhook is just a blah player . Reminds me of the Dvorak deal . Too much for a middling talent
Dvorak is literally the most vanilla player Montreal has spent good assets on in quite a while.

Newhook at least has some very good skills with his speed and shooting. It's not a lack of effort with him either, he's just not a high IQ player.
