Once Newhook properly slots into 3C role he’ll be fine - which happens once Dvo is dealt by deadline.
He doesn't play active hockey enough to be a C. You've ever seen him fore-checking, pursuing the puck carrier effectively? I can't remember any particular sequence where I thought he was doing great at C.

I think our best bet is to find a hockey trade to a team who needs a fast scoring winger asap.

Carbonneau was not a slouch. He could score 20+ goals and get 50 points every season. + winning te majority of his faceoffs.

Ya but he was not raise in the mecka of hockey....the you S of A

Do i have to put the emoji........oh well, there it is :sarcasm:

Agreed - but his line was always viewed as a shutdown line matching up vs opposition top line. The way Boston Jr Eagles & MidFairfield play shuns the concept of a shutdown line instead focusing on constant offensive attack driven by puck possession - Chara coaches the Jr Eagles now and has continued the philosophy implemented by Hughes

Whether Hughes & MSLs approach actually works w Habs is TBD, but I’m positive that’s their current strategy

In his 3 full NHL seasons Newhook’s been consistent in 30-34 pts - last year he was on pace for 50pts

IMO it’s a bit early to say he’s fallen off the cliff w 70% of the season left to play

So much of creating secondary offense for this season's Habs team was built around having Laine in the lineup…

He would have to reach the cliff first

3rd line scorer with Beck and Roy. That’s how I see it long term.
He’ll have to learn to kill penalties.

Bottom 6 PK’ers: Armia Dvo Evans Anderson.
Non-PK’er: Gally Heineman

Need to keep 4 in the former group. At least.

For the people on his case:

Positives:
PDO is awful and so is 5 on 5 shooting % when he's on the ice.
His IPP is terrible.
His chances for % is up from last year.
Expected goals for is lower than what it should be.
Avg speed is higher than last year.
Fenwick is up from last year.
He's less sheltered for faceoffs.

Negatives:
His SOG is down vs last year. 1.3 a game is too low.
His separation speed isn't really there.
Needs to build an identity as a player.

So all signs point to Newhook being unlucky. He should probably have as many assists as goals right now.
4 13 18 23 34 46

Those are 6 / 49 winning numbers pals

21 goals, 40 points in his last 82 NHL games at 23 years old.

Will be interesting to see what his 24 & 25 year old production looks like.

If he only plateaus, 20g/40pts is still very good production at his cap cost.

If he improves 20%... 25 goals/50points... That's a great value.

If he breaks out...30 goals 60points? We're talking a huge steal.

I think many of the hot take critics are far too quick to assume a 23 year old has reached his peak. Newhook is ahead of the curve for his draft class, and there's no reason to assume he's going to regress or plateau the next few seasons.

Future is bright 😎

When 2 players have more than half of our goals you can't be serious. :dunno:
Yes I am, Newhook's production is not enough to make this team win. We need a 2nd C a lot more than another goal scorer. More, we're getting Demidov next season, so Newhook should be considered an expandable piece. He sucks far less than Dach, so ... We may be able to patch our problems trading him.

It stinks, but that's what I see. Not enough impact, not enough versatility to play C. We can do better developing other prospects.
