If we're just disregarding the results we don't like, Skinner has very similar numbers to guys like Wolf and Oettinger since Dec 1st with a 12-6 record and a .910.
I don't think Skinner is the answer, but I *KNOW* Ned isn't the answer. There's a reason he's faced a starter's workload exactly once. If we're trading for a goalie I want it to be someone that can put Skinner in the back seat, and Ned's not that guy.
Oh, look at Ned's stats since Dec 1st, he's doing even better than Stu with a .913...on, it needs to be reiterated, a much worse team with a swiss cheese defense. Funny how you failed to reply to that comment with Skinner's last ten games. Is it because he's sitting at an .896 in that time? Hmm, you seem to be disregarding some interesting information yourself...
And watch how soon Skinner would join Schwartz's other pupil on waivers if he faced anything resembling a "starter's workload" in Pittsburgh...
And guess what? The Oilers might not have the option of another goalie. I'd rather have Gibson or Vejmelka myself, but do you really believe doing nothing is better than getting a goalie
currently playing better than Skinner? And I will keep reiterating, behind a
much worse defense...
And it wasn't disregarding numbers we don't like, it's showing that one goalie is playing better at the same time that the other is playing poorly. It's a good sign but not the sole argument. It was someone else's random post that I shared to bolster the argument. And as I will get to below, what you've "done for me lately" is more important than what you've done for me before when it comes to goaltending, especially since our window to win the cup is NOW and that window can close pretty fast. Also, if (when?) Skinner implodes again in the playoffs, wouldn't it be better to have someone closer to his level than below it stepping in?
Also, what if Skinner gets hurt and Pickard is our only choice? Wouldn't it be nice to have Pickard as our third option like he was supposed to be?
Not if you look at a wider sample size, and depends on where you look.
per Moneypuck
2024-25: Ned +1.6
2023-24: Ned -3.3
2022-23: Ned -8.9
Skinner:
2024-25: Skinner -1.7
2023-24: Skinner +2.0
2022-23: Skinner +6.8
Over the three year sample, Skinner is clearly better - and if he's a question mark, so is Ned. Why would we pay a 2nd, a 3rd, and Podkolzin just to still have question marks in goal?
If this were the Skinner of two years ago, we wouldn't be having this conversation...which made his implosion in the playoffs that year all the more surprising. Yes, he was clearly better in 2022-23 and 2023-24. He is not clearly better by any measure in 2024-25, but thank you for that completely irrelevant data since what actually matters is this season. This season, Skinner has performed statistically worse behind a much better defense than Nedeljkovic (especially after Pettersen left).
But if you want to randomly compare numbers in previous seasons for no reason, Ned sits at .920 in the playoffs for his career after 9 Games. And it was the first and last season he was on a playoff team. Skinner was definitely below that number after his first nine games, I don't even need to look that one up, and he's currently sitting at an .894 after 35 Games...
