In the middle of this 20-4-2 stretch I feel we haven't been talking about Kerfoot as much as we should. He has 24 points in 33 games, a 60 point pace! He also has 17 EV assists which leads the team and is 2nd in EV points behind Tavares. He does all this while being the most versatile depth piece we have. He's usually a 2LW, but can play 3C and even jump up to 1RW as we saw last night.

What a year he's having. Arguably the most under-appreciated piece we have on the roster right now

Technically yes. But early on in the season there was a lot of comparison between the two forwards that has just drifted away.

The choice between Kerfoot and McCann wasn't Toronto's to make... McCann also has double Kerfoot's goals on an expansion team so it's not exactly a slam dunk.

Alex Kerfoot is the definition of a complementary piece. High IQ low skill. He is not going to impact play by himself, but put him with the star players and he will do his job. The chemistry between he and Nylander has been remarkable. Also a defensively responsible player. Also was one of the few who showed up last year

Being on an expansion team gifts him 2 min per game of PP time as a primary shooting option, which is the source of 5 of those goals and wouldn't be the case here. Meanwhile Kerfoot is a 2m per game pker on the leagues 5th best pk, while McCann doesn't have a role on the leagues 24th, with Kerfoot having nearly twice the even strength points.

The guys 29th in the league in even strength points for forwards.
Even going by all strengths points per game (players over 15 games) he's 96th in the league (borderline 1st line forward) with essentially zero PP time. That's downright incredible.

At this point I think the choice was to expose Holl as it's clear now that he was overrated.

Kerfoot isn't even a low skill player. He makes toolsy, crisp plays at high speed and thinks the game well.

Like I said, it's not a slam dunk either way you cut it. And there was a scenario where Toronto could plausibly had both, though the cap would have been a little different since some combination of Kase, Kampf, Bunting and Ritchie might not be here.

No doubt that being the furthest thing from the catalyst on his line has been beneficial for him. He still has absolutely shown that he belongs with players of high quality as he is unquestionably pulling his weight.

Kerfoot has been excellent. Definitely under appreciated but slowly opening the eyes of everyone. His IQ is really good, can play in all three zones and both special teams, can line up on the wing or center and is really liked by everyone in the organization. Literally can’t ask for anything more from a 3.5 million dollar player.

And he is plus 19 after 33 games, which is pretty incredible. I was all for trying to move him in a salary dump at the start of the year. They may still have to trade him due to cap issues, but at least now you know it would be a hockey trade.

Kerfoot has been a very solid top six player for the team.

Being able to play with Nylander and not have to play centre has been a big boost for him as he can finally show what he's capable of by playing alongside some skilled guys

He's a good complimentary winger, much like Hyman.

He's been great it's a shame he's probably the guy that will have to go to sign Campbell, unless they somehow get rid of Ritchie

The seemingly minor Kampf signing has had a great positive impact on Kerfoot. It's like magic how moving Kerfoot up in the lineup on the wing makes his weaker traits disappear. He's lifting his load now and in a suited role.

Playing with the cap calculator:
- subtract Mrazek
- subtract Holl or Dermott
- subtract Ritchie
- re-sign Sandin and Liljegren in the vicinity of 1.5 to 2 per player
- fill out the roster with ELCs and league min players
- sign Campbell long term @ $6M aav, keep Kerfoot

As I said in the off-season chat a million times.. we didn't need to truly replace Zach Hyman.. we just needed to give Kerfoot a chance to play his natural LW position. Sure he can play C/RW for stretches... but he was used as a winger in Colorado and found success Toronto... we used him as a centre and it capped his offensive ability.
