We haven't had an offensive threat of his ilk in so long, I don't even wanna hear about defense!

Yep. I want him to be responsible, but not a work-horse. If the habs want to win the cup any time soon we gotta start having an offense that's feared. Galchenyuk is the keystone for such an offense. If he starts playing 5 on 3 PK duty, I'm going to **** a chocolate squirrel.

I completely agree with this.

Gally is a third overall pick who is already demonstrating that he could be expected to produce 70 points per year by his second year, and 80 or more by his third year. And 30 goals or more.

He will be facing teams third line checkers, or perhaps their first line, where he'll have to be better offensively than his counterpart, not better defensively. Let the other team's number 1 center worry about D for once, not ours.

I'm completely uninterested in his D ability, because he won't need any, or just some, when he faces Crosby. And he will not face Crosby that much, at home anyway. We will have a third line ace centre for that job such as Eller perhaps. Gally will back check as required, fine, but that will not be his job.

Habs have been so bad on offense, for so long, that many guys here have forgotten what true offensive talent and aggression is, and think the best we can expect is Pleks.

Back checking is hard work, but easy, he'll learn to do it when needed. Offense is rare talent, and it is what wins you cups.

I don't give a **** about Gally's D ability at this point. None. I am watching him intensely only to see if he might finally be a centre for Habs that can score goals.

Tell that to the fan who pencil Galchenyuk onto the Plekanec line.

If the Habs want to win the Cup then their best players have to buy into the defensive system. Much like the changes that Yzerman had to make on the advice of Scotty Bowman. Bowman asked him if he wanted to be a scoring champ or a Stanley Cup champion......the rest is history.

Yzerman had to becoming a scoring great first.

Agreed. I want him to focus more on his offense and less so on his defence. As long as he isn't a liability in his own end and cause turnovers, which he isn't.

No he didn't.

His past scoring feats were absolutely irrelevant. The only thing that mattered was that he used his skills responsibly. Galchenyuk isn't going to forget how to score if he is asked to adhere to a system that dictates when and where he is able to take risks.

Yzerman was a pretty incredible scorer, though, and wouldn't have been "Yzerman" if he didn't have that element to his game.

I'm pretty tired of relying on the defensive system, and insisting that our youngsters need to conform to it before they're given any sort of responsibility. For the last few years we've been icing teams who were terrible in the offense department, and simply needed to be unquestionably superior to their opponents defensively in order to win a game. That's ******** hockey, hockey that was engineered to make bad teams beat good ones. I want a good team. And the mark of a good team is that you can win a fire-fight, just like you can win a trench battle.

All of them, but I wouldn't jump at that yet considering there is a chance he never plays for Sarnia again.

Yeah, I know I wasn't planning on even considering it at this point. I've had HS before and liked it anyway, was just curious as to if they showed all the games or not. Thanks to both of you guys.

Come playoffs though he will be more likely to face opposition equal to or better than him more often and that's when you want him to be able to play just as well defensively when the ice isn't opened up. And winning playoffs means winning cups.

I disagree.

I am usually not one to exaggerate, in fact I'm probably the most neg guy on this board, but it is increasingly looking like come playoffs in 5 years, no opposition no. 1 center in the playoffs will be as dangerous as Gally, except for Sid and RNH.

Don't forget, all the other really good centers right now in the LNH are going to be 5 years older by then, and the younger guys who are drafted next year will not be ready.

As Agent Smith said in the matrix: 'This is our time.'

5 years is a long time of course. Anything can happen.

And it is stupid of me to predict this of course, but that is the way it is looking right now.

Loosen up and get used to elite offensive talent. It's been a long time, and Habs deserve it.

Anyone catch what Kyle Woodlief had to say about Galchenuk when he was on with Marinaro about 15 mins ago?

I was waiting for it all morning, then had to be called away at a meeting right when it starts :shakehead

Next time, quit your job and catch the interview. Get your priorities straight, for god's sake.

I remember really hoping Jean Beliveau would learn to backcheck along with scoring his 500 goals.

Wait. I don't remember hoping that.

Bowman just asked Stevie to back check once in a while, like he used to ask the Flower to do, with mixed results.

Otherwise Bowman shut his mouth and let his players play the game. Especially his offensive players. That's why he was the best coach ever.

And: Wait! I remember seeing Gretz live, at the coliseum, hanging out at the RED LINE waiting for the deadly stretch pass, with the rest of his team in his own end. While the Oil were killing a penalty.

And then I would watch the opposing D back out of the O zone, on the PP, every time, worrying about Gretz at the red line. 'Oh well, we'll score later, better worry about Gretz for now.' Oh. We lost. Oh well.

Man, Gretz should have been more responsible defensively.

Hockey is about scoring goals, it's about offense, and out skating your opponent. Always has been, always will be. Pure and simple. D is for weak teams without scorers. We just forgot that the last 20 years.

And if you're tempted, don't bring up 70's Habs. That was Dryden and Serge Savard on D, and 18 other guys who played all out offense, and hitting in the O zone, all the time, including Gainey.
