I do not think so.

It was just not a great spot for Debrincat for a couple of reasons. I do not think the playoffs would have made any difference.

IF Norris had not been hurt and they clicked and he had a very strong offensive year, that would have been much more useful in convincing him to stay.

Arguably we cleared 5.3M with the deal, so I do not see the deal as the reason Pinto was not signed. If we had kept Debrincat, we'd still be without Pinto and Tarasenko.

Using the 5.3 to sign Tarasenko, thats a different story.

Going to be a late first in all likelihood. Mid-first is definitely sugar-coating it

it was always a 1 year rental for a #7 (+) pick so Dorion can make himself not look like a failure. Or Dorion has no ability to plan.

We could have fit in DeBrincat for 8x8 had we not added Korpisalo, Tarasenko and Kubalik (11.5M).

He could have been fit in cap-wise, but my argument has always been that it didn't make sense to commit 8M or so to our 2nd line LW given it wouldn't allow us to improve in other areas. Trading as much as we did for him never made sense for that reason.

I don't believe Dorion thought he was likely to stay beyond this season. Plan was to rent him for a year, have him score 40G+ and help the team make the playoffs (helping Dorion's case for remaining GM), then be traded away for hopefully as much as we traded to get him.

Not a great plan, obviously. Blew up in his face and we're much worse off for it.

How are we worse off trading DBC, the team looks so much better than they did last yr? And they still have a few prospects knocking at the door & six picks in the first 4 rds of the 2024 draft. Once they get this Pinto situation fixed they will have plenty of cap space next yr & might be able to add another good player. Even if they were to lose all three UFAs they will have plenty of cash to replace them with a good player or two, they seem to have a very bright future.
