OT here, but what is your deal with Ireland? He has had an amazing offseason, and still is in the lead to land Leach, which would be a huge upgrade for us at FB. He has also set us up, cap wise, where we will still be around $20 million under next year, even though some of that will go to a Jones extension. His drafting isnt the best, but he has been rock solid in free agency, and has given us more playmakers on both sides of the ball. He is much better than any other GM that has been here in a long time, even though that is not saying much.

The whole line of discussion is OT.

Guys, don't we have a thread for non-hockey discussions? Move it there, please.

What jersey number do you think Barkov will wear? He wears 16 in the Finnish Leage and 6 when representing Finland. I think the newly acquired Bobby Butler wears 16, So between Barkov and Butler for # 16, if Barkov doesn't get it I think he rolls with # 6.

Barkov will probably get 16, most likely Weiss leaves this summer making # 9 available. Butler wore 9 in New Jersey, he may take it, or is it too soon to be taking a great Panthers player number too soon?

"Passing up on Jones when you are the Florida Panthers, and you dont have an overwhelming array of defensive depth"

Soupy
Kulikov
Gudbranson
Petrovic
Matheson
Robak

Yeah, you are right Pierre, that list has nothing but a bunch of 3rd pairing dmen :shakehead

It is definitely a pleasure listening to Bob Mckenzie talk though. He knows a lot, and it really shows in times like this.

Pierre's an idiot. Always has been, always will be. I watched the draft on Sunday and to hear him rip on the Panthers for not selecting Jones, but to hear him proclaim his love for the Lightning and drafting Drouin was completely beyond me. If he ripped on the Panthers for passing on Jones, shouldn't he have ripped on the Lightning for passing on Jones as well? After all, it's not as if their defense is all world.

I think Pierre is a pretty biased guy in terms of who we likes and who he doesn't. It's clear that he doesn't like the Panthers for some reason. But Barkov will probably shut him up in a couple of years when he's playing 22 to 25 minutes a night, putting up a point per game and playing in all situations. Great, great, great pick by the way.

Serious question, what has Weiss done to be considered a great panther other than stick with the team through one of the worst decades in professional sports history? He's been a loyal player, but he was never a "star". He will be one of those guys who is fondly remembered like stu Barnes or bill Lindsay, but nothing more than that imo

He was consistently one of the best players on our team. And an offensive leader for a really poor decade of offense. He might not have been a star, but he is/was one of our 'stars'.

Trust me I know what you're saying... he never came close to sniffing an all-star game for example, but he still was consistently one of our best players.

I agree. You need to be both "great" and a Panther to be a great Panther. Weiss was only one of the two. If he is a great Panther, then we should hang our heads in shame.

because this franchise hasn't been shameful for Weiss's entire career or something...

because of the comparison's to great Canadiens, great Blackhawks, great Red Wings etc. he might be the best of the most recent Panthers, but he certainly wasnt great. id rather the franchise say we havent had any great players yet than say that he was a great player.

Okay well yeah Weiss wasn't a great Blackhawk. Or a great Canadien. Or a great Red Wing.

He's not a great player. But like it or not, he's a great Florida Panther. Just like Viktor Kozlov was a great Florida Panther. And so was Nathan Horton. Too bad so sad, maybe if we start icing a better team that fact will go away.

well, he can get a spot in the den of honor, all fine with me, but retiring #? idk... maybe not give it away to the next scrub though

Here's what I wrote on the prospect boards. (Habs fan)

As a draft junkie, this was an unexpected pick, but definitely by far, my favorite pick of the whole draft. (outside of Fucale to the Habs ). Barkov looks really sharp in that red jersey and he will become a huge franchise player for Dale Tallon and the Panthers alongside Jonathan Huberdeau. The Panthers under GM Dale Tallon will be a world class organization in a few years. Great prospect pool, great talent at all positions.

Barkov's sick in that jersey... I can't believe it.

Forget about Pierre's comments... forget about Jones. People judge him because they haven't seen him enough. Barkov is the youngest to score a goal in the World Junior Championship, beating Crosby. People forget that Barkov's 2 way game is so much more on another level than all of the rest of the draft class. People forget that Barkov has insane hands that can even be rivalled those of Drouin's. People forget how cerebral he can play the game. People forget that he's one of the youngest players of the draft. People forget that he dominated the SM-liiga...not the WHL. But unfortunately, people remember Jones because he's in the CHL. I'm a Habs fan and I have always loved how Dale Tallon works and builds a franchise. I love Bergevin's way of thinking and working since he has learned from Dale Tallon. Barkov is a terrific prospect and is a monster of a player. Nuff said.

I'm looking forward to NHL.com's Barkov puns! I'm so excited!

BARK'ING UP THE WRONG TREE!
BARK'ING MAD!
ALL BARK!

one of the interviews they have on the website they have the jurassic park song playing in the background...im gonna start calling him Jurassic Bark :P

you... i like you

have you seen him play or is this the word on the street? I've never seen him play a game, only highlights, and you're making me feel much better about passing on Drouin & Huberdeau winging Bjugstad.

Since scouting is not my job, I consider myself an armchair scout ... basically it is my passion to follow prospects through televised championships, youtube highlights and lots of reading on the boards and independant scouting services. I have watched most of Barkov's games with team Finland at the World Junior Championship for the past 2 years since his eligibility. When I first heard of him through HFboards about 3-4 years ago, I was intrigued by what people called "A Finnish phenom that has Jagr's size with Datsyuk's hands".

He did not have a tremendous tournament this past Holidays at the WJC and what separate him from others was that he was able to admit it after his team elimination after a strong showing in the pre-tournament games. He was a beast against team Canada and helped his team surprised team Canada. He plays a 200 ft game and is not shy to either go in the corners or in front of the net. His vision is out of the ordinary... the highlights of him this past season in the SM-liiga are phenomenal.

In all honesty, I have not seen a full game of him in the SM-liiga since I'm from Canada and have no idea how to watch those games. But I can assure you, it is my passion and hobby and from all the time I've put into my blog (hockeylobby.blogspot.com), I believe that Barkov is a tremendous player. Drouin is shifty and skilled, but he will never have the same impact on both ends of the ice than Barkov. I'm primarily a QMJHL fan and follower, and I have seen Drouin play live once this past season and it is very hard to project his dominance against men... comparing to Barkov who's already playing against men.

*Plus, drafting Barkov now gives you a potential 1-2 punch in the middle of Barkov-Bjugstad instead of having all your offensive stars on 1 line (Drouin-Bjugstad-Huberdeau)

There is couple games from Barkov in youtube. Which includes only Barkov's shifts.

This is from 8 months ago when Barkov had just turned 17. #16 with Golden helmet. Sean Bergenheim plays in this game against Barkov #84 red jersey:

Period 1:

Period 2:

Period 3:

Watch his board work in defensive zone. He simply ties opposite players on the boards so defensemen can just pick up the puck. He plays like man and with his body in all zones but isn't overly physical. Helps the defense out all the time.

I know novice hockey fans have a tough time watching the puck as it is now in the NHL, just imagine if they had advertising splattered all over the ice, like in these videos  That is the one thing I love about NA sport leagues, nowhere near the advertising as European leagues.

Do you think Yormark starts drooling and twitching when he sees all that advertising?
