Do players in the NHL actually do that? 99 is retired across the league, and I think using 66 would also be a bit rich.

66 and 99 are different numbers... they're about 33 apart.

Huberdeau wears 11, Mueller wears 88, Gudbranson 44, Jovo 55, Parros 22, etc., etc..

I think you completely missed the point -- 66 is Mario Lemieux's number. And while not league-wide retired, it's still notoriously Mario Lemieux. Arguably just as great a player as Wayne Gretzky.

You're right, I wasn't thinking about that. Technically it would be available to him. Though, there's only two players currently in the NHL that use #66, so there's obviously an unofficial rule not to use the number. It's all moot. 16 is available and he'll probably go with that.

I feel kind of bad about trashing the pick yesterday. I was saying it was a reach yada yada yada. But the more I read about this guy, the more I liked. I think what happens is we tend to look at what the so-called "experts" say about these drafts (not just in hockey but in all sports) and we trust sources like TSN to tell us who to like.

The thing is, we as fans are not privy to what goes on behind the scenes with interviews, combines, and such. I'm a big CHL fan so I typically lean towards players that go the major junior route, but just because someone is not from the CHL doesn't mean they aren't any good. It just means I am not familiar with them, making them seem like more of a gamble. Being a Miami Dolphins fan, and seeing how crappy they have been drafting (with the exception of the Tannehill pick) there really isn't too much to be excited about when it comes to the Fins. I'm just very used to being let down in drafts. However, Dale Tallon isn't Jeff Ireland, Randy Mueller, Rick Spielman, Nick Saban, Dave Wannstedt, or any of the loser GM's the Dolphins have had in the last decade. He actually seems competent and that he knows what he's doing.

Looking at what the Panthers are doing at the centre position, you can make a case that Barkov was their guy all along, even possibly over MacKinnon. I believe all of the teams centres are at least 6'3 so its obvious Tallon likes to go big at that position. Once the initial shock wore off of passing on Jones and Drouin, most hockey publications did some actual research and now the Barkov pick is getting rave reviews. I can admit when I am wrong about something, and I definitely think I was wrong to write this kid off as being a reach. All I can say is welcome to Florida, Sasha, and I hope you have a fine NHL career!

Barkov was also tired when he entered WJC's. Tappara had lots of games before the tournament and Barkov's ice time was huge.

This is exactly what I was thinking when DT wanted to acquire Colorado's 1st overall. He said in all the interviews that they heavily debated Barkov and Jones. I think they had a lot of trouble choosing and DT tried to ease the decision by being able to pick both of them. Barkov has DT center written all over him, not Mackinnon.

I think Tallon wanted to see what it would cost to get BOTH Barkov and Jones as opposed to Mackinnon.

I am excited to see Barkov play here. The kid is going to play very well at the NHL level. His skating is not a concern to me, most big #1 centers have skating as their worst attribute (Thornton, Spezza, Sundin, Staal, Getzlaf etc.) so this is not a worry in any way for me.

The kid seems to have incredible hockey IQ.

Great pick. People talk that he is Thorton/Kopitar type of player and that maybe somewhat true. But if we look at Sasha and behind hes size, witch is awsome, we have to think those induviduals who made impact in him. First of all his dad. Extremely good passer and playmaker. No doubt there has been father/son talks about bees and butterflys but hockey has been there always too, major influence for sure. Then there is Ville Nieminen and if you know Villes play style, that is everything else but a playmaker. He teached sasha to be tough. I remeber last fall when there were talks that he would drafted with high number and they were talking about it at the gym with other guys. Ville worked out and listened. He said to Sasha something like "You really think, that when you are drafted, it automatcally meens that you are NHL player? Now quit that mambojambo and finnish your workout!" After that Ville has stated often that you have to pay the price in gym if you want to be in nhl, if you wont, then you are not cut for it.

These two aproaches to hockey has molded Sasha to a player who he is today. Ofcourse there is talent in it too. What i am trying to say is that Sasha has given tools to make himself future hall of famer. Question is does he learn how to use them and last year in FEL it seemed like he is starting to learn.

Thornton level is pretty good, but he can be so much better. Imagine Datsuyk with size and with a better shot.

Barkov was indeed a disappointment in the WJC. I don't understand those arguments saying he was "unexperienced", "only 17" etc. while he played succesfully in the FEL. For example, Joel Armia had much more impressive showing in UFA. And yes, he is two years older. BUT then again the same people who say this, still claim that Barkov is not only the superior prospect but was/is much better already as the last season stats in FEL should show. I just think Barkov got a little exposed in WJC. He needs to find another gear (esp. explosiviness) before he is NHL ready. I mean if he is too slow to be an impact player in WJC how about the NHL??

1. Barkov played with scrubs in a defensive role

2. Tappara(his FEL-team) played european trophy and FEL and Barkov was the only youngster whos coach didnt rest him before the WJC, because of his importance to the FEL-team. You could tell he was tired.

What jersey number do you think Barkov will wear? He wears 16 in the Finnish Leage and 6 when representing Finland. I think the newly acquired Bobby Butler wears 16, So between Barkov and Butler for # 16, if Barkov doesn't get it I think he rolls with # 6.
If an established veteran in Madden didn't get #11 because it was Huberdeau's number, no way Butler gets #16.

Who is this troll?

I just said that Barkov's lackluster performance in the WJC (especially compared to his terrific season in the FEL) may rise some concerns regarding his NHL readiness. He may very well be ready enough come the fall but - as he has said himself - he needs to work with his skating/first strides before it's on a (good) NHL level.

Huberdeau is not an elite skater, nor does he have a very explosive first stride and he won the Calder.

Im a Vikings fan and Spielman's last three drafts have been lights out for us. Maybe its just the dolphins that are cursed.

Just so people are clear, simply stating an opinion on a player and trying to defend it is not trolling. When it becomes repetitive in multiple threads, including hijacking threads, and reaches the point of actual bashing, it's trolling.

So let's not have any more posts along the line of "so and so is a troll", I'm already tired of handing out flaming infractions.

I have to say, i am happy for you and you will be found this BPA, if you don't find that yet. It's not often that you found this kind of skill set and that big frame in pure "C". I just look past 10 years draft and there is only Sean Couturier, Jordan Staal, Evgeni Malkin and Eric Staal how has drafted top10 and it would be very cocky say that Barkov has best skill set of them (and hard to say that he would ever had), but i could say that after Malkin and Eric Staal, Barkov is next in offensive skills.

I admit he's been pretty good with the Vikings. He sucked royally here though. One of the dumbest moves he ever made was trading a 2nd round pick for AJ freaking Feeley. He obviously learned from his mistakes with the Dolphins and went on to be a decent GM in Minnesota.

OT here, but what is your deal with Ireland? He has had an amazing offseason, and still is in the lead to land Leach, which would be a huge upgrade for us at FB. He has also set us up, cap wise, where we will still be around $20 million under next year, even though some of that will go to a Jones extension. His drafting isnt the best, but he has been rock solid in free agency, and has given us more playmakers on both sides of the ball. He is much better than any other GM that has been here in a long time, even though that is not saying much.
