now that both young 1Cs have had their deals signed, sealed and delivered. who do you take going forward, including contracts.

imo Matthews>Aho, however, not sure if he is ~3.2M ahead. With cap-space being ever valuable is Aho the better value given the quality of player+contract?

Matthews. You pay 3M more for the better player. If Aho got 7 or 8 years it might be a different story.

even with contracts you can't spin this to Aho's favor. Matthews is the better player, he just needs to stay healthy for a whole season to get the h8ers off his back.

Matthews' point production per game was in the same ballpark as Aho's last year. I think in terms of player value he is not worth 35% more than Aho in salary. With adjusting for contract length maybe.

Definitely Matthews for me

You can maybe argue about Aho being the better value but i dont care about value id rather go for best player

Aho is pretty great - but Matthews comfortably ahead for me.

they're both the same length at 5 years. both start next season

Aho had 400 more minutes of ice time including a minute and a half more per game. That's a significant difference.

Matthews is gonna explode in produciton if he can just stay healthy for 82 games.

Auston Matthews.

I don't care about contracts. I'm taking one of the best even strength producer since 2016-17.

i'll take the guy that has the 10 point higher career high on a worse team,is better defensively, and makes 3.2 million a year less

yeah lets just ignore the fact that more than a minute a game of that minute and a half is PK time and punish Aho for actually killing penalties

Matthews has more ESP in 200 less minutes. the difference in points is their ice time.

I see a lot of both. Aho is damn good, I don't want this thread to become one is good or the other sucks. With that said, Canes would trade Aho for Matthews 1 for 1 if they didn't care about the actual cash. Matthews is bigger, stronger on the puck, better goal scorer.

Mattews got a little overrated when he was called better than McDavid a few years ago but since then has been very under rated on HFboards, with the fault of a few injuries.

It took until MacKinnon hit 23 to match Matthews season high goal total (and wasn't even close when pacing goals / gp) and until he was 22 to pass his point totals as a center (compared to his rookie year).

Matthews turns 22 next season.

Contracts aside they are close but Aho has less offensive support upfront. However taking contract into this how anybody takes Mathews is just being a homer. Aho is healthy to let's see moving forward what happens but I'm taking Aho.

Matthews has never been underrated here. He hasn't hit 100 points yet, but he is still a top 3 player in the league according to "some"...

I've already heard all the excuses so don't bother.

He is a phenomenal player, no doubt, but right now I can't think of any athlete in the history of sports that has been more overrated.

That's because there is more to hockey than what is on hockeydb

Just to be clear as I agree with you fully Mathews hasn't even hit 74 points in a season yet. He was the 42 nd in league scoring this year. Yes that same Mathews who some believe to be a top 5 player. Under rated Aho mind you was 21 in league scoring.

Matthews just slaps up Finnish players, look what he did to Laine.

This isn't close at all lol.

Matthews.

its aho+ top6 player vs matthews + bottom 6 player. Don't think matthews is that much better.

Matthews for me. Aho is awesome and he has better contract. But Matthews simply is the better player. I do worry about his injuries a bit, but Barkov seemed to be able to put them behind so I think Matthews can too.
