If you think Trouba is dirty you arent paying attention. 95% of his big hits are clean as can be.

Trouba is dirty because he hits to injure.

Just because the league says you're allowed to turn someone into a vegetable because they admired their pass, doesn't mean you have to take full advantage of it. Otherwise we'd see hip checks all game long

Predictably the Canes fans (all.. of them) are in denial.
Hope they have something to whine about (that is more than they usually do) on Jan 2.
You have canes fans and fans of seemingly every other team (minus the rangers) in this thread in agreement that this was a complete nothing incident and that there’s no reason Aho should have had to fight for an incidental contact.

Then there are a few special rangers fans going on about the code and how Aho is a coward who will be targeted in the future.

To me, it looks like Fox extended his leg out, putting himself in danger. This really sucks...Fox had become one of my favorite players to watch. I wish him the best.

Jan 2 has come early it seems.

PS re "every other team" - yeah it DOES seem to be true that SOME fanbases are more apt at scolding the NYR than at rooting for their own FRANCHISE. Rarely if ever this is true for the NYR fans discussions. We bash our own.

Replace Fox with McDavid, Crosby, or Bedard and this board melts down on what a dirty player Aho is. But because it's Fox, and among other things, he is a player for the Rangers it crickets on Aho and the blame is on Fox. Typical.
I love Fox and I have him on my fantasy team but I'm watching the replay and Aho does not stick his leg out. It's just an unfortunate play that you are understandably upset about.

As a Rangers fan this felt accidental. Sucks that he will be out 2-4 weeks.
If that's the timeline then I'm breathing a sigh of relief for you guys.

If Aho had cross-checked him in the neck a la Dubinsky or elbowed him in the back of the head into the boards like Hedman on Crosby, you might make sense with the comparison...

If anything you could compare this to Tyler Myers falling on Malkin's leg in 2011 and wrecking his knee... something that wasn't, nor shouldn't have been, met with any outrage.

Intentionally getting in a players way does not automatically constitute interference. It can be legal if done properly.
No, intentionally getting in a player's way is always illegal. Being in another player's way for reasons other than trying to get in that player's way (ie. unintentionally) is legal.

One of the dark arts of any team sport is to toe the line of whether some form of disruption is intentional or just part of the flow of the game. It's that questionable area that creates "legal interference".

Speaking of someone running away when an opposing player steps up against him....

Laf couldn't get to the bench fast enough when Svech told him to get his hands off Aho

You clearly missed later in the game when Laf had him horse collared by the benches and Svech wouldn’t fight him and ran to the bench. Svech is the fakest tough guy in the league

All of Carolina is fake tough, actually

Why would Carolina want their second best forward to fight a Rags 3rd liner? That's an awful tradeoff for Carolina in a close game

Oh okay. Let's just wrap all the players in bubble wrap in that case. Or just maybe players should learn to keep their heads up and not admire passes. Something they've been taught since bantam. Crazy theory i know.

Unintentional contact away from the puck, if excessive, is still interference. Also if you leave your stick out and clip someones face or they trip over it it doesnt matter if its intentional or if they skated through it and you didnt move. I think a reasonable case can be made that that play is interference if no effort was made to avoid the contact. Its 100% unintentional, no chance its a suspension and Aho has nothing to really fight for about it, but it couldve been a 2 minute minor for interference if the refs felt like it.

And Fox shouldn't have stuck his leg out when trying to impede Aho
thats just plain stupid! I get your a Canes fan but geez!
Aho didn't knee Fox, he interfered with Fox. Mike Johnson on the NHL network put it best when he described the incident. He said it should have been a 2 minute interference penalty on Aho because it was away from the puck and Aho was impeding Fox from getting to the net for a pass, but it was weird because it happened at such a slow rate of speed. In most cases an injury like the one Fox received would happen when the collision is at a much higher rate of speed. As for Aho, I honestly lost respect for him because he wouldn't answer the bell against Lafreniere. It wasn't like it was Goodrow or Trouba challenging him. Think he put a target on his back by not answering the bell.

Certainly could be argued that Aho should have been penalized for interference. On the short clip, it seems like he changes his path last second to impede Fox's movement on the ice. Interference is not one of those penalties that automatically lead to game misconducts because it resulted in an injury, however. Like charging, a major is dependent on the degree of violence of the interference. Aho's turning and being in the way ain't it.

Why would a 1C fight a 3rd line player? That's not something any coach would tell you is a smart move. Heck it wasn't even a play worth fighting over anyways.

My take is this.

Only thing Aho really got wrong there was assuming his team would come up with the puck and produce a breakout pass for him.

He took a turn right on Fox’s lane trying to get ready for the pass and had no chance of getting out of in time, thus he braced for the collision. Unintentional, but still interference.

Fox had himself injured with that awkward way of sticking his leg out trying to avoid collision. Could have easily injured them both there.
