Toronto's boss was the only GM to receive multiple votes, likely due to the big-ticket contracts he doled out to core forwards Auston Matthews ($11.634 million), John Tavares ($11 million), Mitch Marner (10.96 million), and William Nylander ($6.9 million).

Interestingly enough, the GM voted toughest to deal with was Lou Lamoriello, who joined the New York Islanders when Dubas took over the job in Toronto.

Clarkson got a vote for the worst deal. That’s an X against Nonis.

Well thats not surprising after they saw the RFA deals he handed out
You mean where 2 of them were good? Nylander is a steal. Matthews is good value. Dubas shouldn't be 1st on this lst.
Again these results don't mean anything so whatever.

The Dubas vote I get but how is Lou the toughest GM to negotiate with considering he was generous with the contracts he gave to these guys:

Marleau 3x6M
Zaitsev. 7x4.5 M
Nelson. 6x6
Lee. 7x7
Bailey. 6x5M
Pageau. 5x5M
Martin. 4x2.5M
Komorov. 4x3M

It's really a terribly run poll. It's ambiguous and subject to interpretation. Like the first one, what constitutes a "great deal" for an agent's client? Seems like a lot of people immediately assume that it has only to do with the size of the contracts he hands out, but that is likely an incorrect assumption. Some agents may interpret it that way, but others may interpret it like the GM does everything in his power to make sure the client is well-taken care of:

- Dubas trades Leivo to give him a chance to play elsewhere when he could have decided to protect a valuable asset instead.
- Dubas visits Mikheyev in the hospital personally to ensure that he is recovering well and feels comfortable. Most GM's do not do that.
- Dubas set up a multi-tier development system which gives younger players who may need more time to develop an ample opportunity and resources to develop while also earning a competitive wage.
- He called up various Marlies over the course of the year to let them earn an NHL paycheck for at least one day, even if they never ended up playing (Bracco, Agostino, Gaudet, etc.). They earned 7x what they would normally earn in that day, which is substantial when you are making around 100k otherwise.

On top of the prestige and comforts that come from playing for a team that is constantly making the playoffs and spares no expense to make sure their players can be their best. All of these agents have far more clients who are never going to be able to demand a large money contract, or will be lucky to get any kind of contract they can get. So other things beyond money and contract terms typically matter to those guys.

If that poll wanted to know who was the GM who handed out the worst contracts, they should have worded the question as such. Or worded it literally like they did with the question about which contracts are hurting their teams the most right now... Funny enough, none of Dubas' deals received a single vote on that list.

How many agents have Auston Matthews, John Tavares, William Nylander and Mitch Marner quality players to negotiate for? I crap on Dubas enough but we have an enviable roster of elite players and they cost money. We aren't going out and making Milan Lucic, Kris Russell, Loui Eriksson and friends rich.

it would be more enviable if they weren't all overpaid

Oh I agree, 100%. But go around the league and look at guys like James van Riemsdyk, Kevin Hayes, Loui Eriksson, Bobby Ryan, Sergei Bobrovsky, Jeff Skinner, Jamie Benn, David Krejci, Milan Lucic and let's start naming some GM's.

Dubas DID get completely f***ed on the Matthews and Marner deals. These were RFAs, they had very little leverage. Star RFAs either get good term (5-6 years) but poor $$, or they get poor term (7-8 years) but good $$. Matthews and Marner both got good term and GREAT $$ (2nd highest paid C and W in the league), that’s basically unheard of for RFAs. Dubas did a terrible job on these deals, and deserves to be considered the biggest pushover of all GMs on contract negotiations, which is clearly the case from this survey.

I actually think Dubas is a decent GM overall, but he’s clearly a terrible negotiator, and I don’t see how anyone can disagree with this. Marner has the 2nd highest cap hit of any winger, despite being an RFA, nowhere remotely close to the 2nd best winger in the league, AND he got player friendly term. Matthews and Tavares are 2nd and 3rd in the league for centre cap hit - at least JT was a UFA, but Matthews was an RFA and got extremely player friendly term. No other GM is close to Dubas in terms of weak negotiation.
