When that tight leash on Larsson is removed, he will look better. With all the veterans getting priority, Larsson isn't going to be "the guy" on defense.

Agreed. Confidence plays a big part in his development and play. Can't do too well for a 20 year old when you could get benched next game for making one or two bad plays, whereas the veterans get multiple free passes. I think it was a few games ago either against Philly or Florida where he just let loose and was throwing is body around and making plays.

I really do hope he plays every game next season, and they give him some more freedom offensively. He's on too tight a leash in that regard IMO.

The key with Larsson is he needs to improve each season. I think he looks better this year than last, and that's good news, but next year is important because he needs to take the next step.

I'd be worried if Adam was getting worse as he plays more games, but that isn't the case.

Well that will depend Lou because if we have 8 d-men next year, it's going to be a huge issue.

Yes he was on fire in both of those games which I loved to see. In my opinion playing multiple games in a row gave a huge boost to his confidence. The free passes the vererans get are appalling. Volchenkov never should have played last night, he was responsible for multiple goals against verses the Rangers.

I hope I didn't come off as "I think Larsson stinks and he'll never be as good as Hedman". I just think it's too early to compare the players especially when Hedman has distinguished himself as a terrific player already. Wait a year or 2 to compare them.

The main factor is Larsson is still too young to really be compared with any of these guys mentioned. I don't think any logical assessment of Larsson can be made for at least 2-4 years. Defenseman take time to develop, have patience people.

he needs to play every game...none of this bingo ball **** every night.

Greene, Larsson, and Fayne should be playing every night.

Adam is one of the best skater’s in this year’s draft -- he has excellent speed and mobility. He also has patient puck handling abilities and can surprise an opponent with a solid hit. His size and skating ability make him comparable with Tampa Bay Lightning defenseman Victor Hedman.”

Unfortunatly for us, as long as we don't move a couple of d-men, DeBoer will never sit a veteran for a long period of time over two "rookies" in Larsson and Fayne.

Both of those guys are going to get the raw end of that deal as long as Salvador, Tallinder and my favorite player of all time, Volchenkov, are still part of this team.

It sucks, but that's just the way it is.

I think that's partially due to playing on the big ice surfaces. When Larsson gets up to speed he has nice, long strides that are deceptively speedy. Larsson's problem is changing direction and acceleration to the point of the play. On the larger ice surface there is more time to react to plays so his slower start speed isn't as big a deal.

hf knows more than most scouts, i agree

Well you don't have to be a scout to see that Adam Larsson wasn't the best skater in that draft class. Heck, you can probably say that he's not that good of a skater today, and he's been drafted 2 years ago

-Larsson played 21 minutes per game and scored 18 pts in 65 games during his rookie campaign.
-Hedman played 21 minutes per game and scored 20 in 74 games during his rookie season.
Nothing to add

Yeah especially because the first year was never in the discussion to begin with. Let's just say their rookie season was quite close but I don't see the point here.

-Hedman, in his 2nd season, played for the 7th best offense in the league, 2.94 G/G and a 103 pts stacked with talent, Eastern Conference Finalist team.
-Devils are 28th offense in the NHL with 2.33 G/G
That's makes a difference of 2 more goals scored every 3 games for Tampa. Tampa never had to face in 2010-2011 a 8 defence-man controversy neither. Fayne, Tallinder, Volchenkov that was a complete confidence-breaker for all the dmen sitting. And no one certainly can blame a 20 years old dman to have trouble in such a context.

-Despite 8 dmen, Larsson still played 35 games so far this season but for a career total of 100 games.
-Hedman played 79 games in his 2nd season for a total of 153 games after 2 seasons.
Significant difference. that makes a 1/3 of more games for Hedman. Yeah Larsson's 2nd year is not even a legit 82 games season. Quite unfair.

So basically you are saying that Hedman played more in a better team. Thank you for adding to my point.

-Brewer, Öhlund, Lundin and Jones: 4 dmen were averaging more PK time/game than Hedman. Only Purcell and Kubina had more PP time than Hedman. Hedman was getting 50% offensive zone starts in his 2nd season.
How is that a key assignement ?

Hedman still played more than Larsson both in total ice-time and PK time. That is the point. And if you you really watched the Lightning at that time you'd know the answer to your own question as Hedman was a key player in the Tampa defense that year. I can hardly say the same about Larsson.

That's in his 3rd season that Hedman really started to be impressive, when he became Tampa's real shutdown #1 dman, still producing offensively and also taking A LOT of defensive zone starts. Larsson will have a tough time to match this kind of performance next year.

Not really. Hedman was a monster in the 2012 playoffs so we could say his breakout went at this time. The following year was more the confirmation than anything.

Look, I don't want to talk about this all night. The bottom line is simple, Hedman was an absolute regular on the 7th team in the league, playing 21 minutes a game and 2 minutes of PK a game, producing 26 points in the process. He was the second most used player in the team already while Larsson was barely regular in a team that failed to qualify in the playoffs. You REALLY don't see the difference here ?

And while I ask you some question, I'll add another. Don't you see the absurdity of this comparaison ? I mean, there is absolutly no common points between Hedman and Larsson in their style of game. Not saying this against you, but just because they were two swedish top-picks doesn't mean we absolutly have to compare them, really. Let's just support Larsson and hope for him to become the good defensman we need him to become instead of putting follish comparaisons just for the sake of it.

It doesn't take a genius to see he isn't anywhere near one of the best skaters from that draft. When you consider guys like Zibanejad, Hamilton, Murphy, baertschi, etc who are all exceptional skaters.

I fail to see how Jim is wrong. Not alk scouts are on another level of hockey knowledge that no one can approach....

if you think he's a good skater then my overall opinion of you as a poster just went in the toilet.

I never said he was a great skater, nor do I think he's a bad skater. I just think it's funny how people here can come up with a better 2011 scouting report in 2013, 2 years after the fact. People forget Larsson played on a larger rink where speed and acceleration isn't as important as an NHL rink.

And honestly, I don't care about how you view me as a poster. You called Zidlicky "not NHL ready" which pretty much summarizes the kind of poster you are. I don't really care about how most of HF views me as a poster, aside from a few people here. The few people that are capable of having an intelligent conversation about hockey get lost in the sea of overly dramatic pessimists who think judgement day is upon us.

Larsson is barely 20 and people are freaking out about his game. Show me where most NHL d-men are at age 20. I guarantee Larsson is way ahead of the curve.

The scouting report said "one of the best skaters in the draft " which, of course, is incorrect.

And I think there are numerous factors that go into that. To being a great overall skater. Acceleration, balance, stride, footwork, strength, etc.

I'm not doubting that, but I challenge you to find ONE POST from someone on the Devils board two years ago that disagreed with it. You won't find one.

You will find it now in 2013 though because hindsight as always is 20/20

I think Larsson is a solid skater.

Obviously not one of the best skaters in that draft class, but I think it's also obvious that he is much better then "barely faster then Volch" or "he can't skate backwards".

Even in the WJCs you could see he had issues with his footwork and dealing with fast plsyers which is a judgement/speed issue.

He's certainly a mobile defenseman, but he could improve his overall skating a lot. But like you said he's very young and has nothing but time to improve. Needs to be working on his lower body all summer along with power skating...
