I just want to know what the hell our scouting staff has been watching all this time. I mean for years they have gone the opposite way of other teams scouting reports and frankly if you look at the draft history we've overlooked a lot of future NHLers even at our mediocre ranked picks. just saying - look at the draft history - You'll be disappointed.

How do you know they've gone the opposite way of other team's scouting reports? Are you privy to other team's scouting reports?

Using hindsight, you will find a lot of this, it means nothing because we really don't know what other scouts were thinking or projecting at the time.

Come on, using hindsight to blast draft decisions is stupid.

Guess what? We're not the only team that wishes they could have drafted different player. That's why they hold the draft in the first place.

I don't literally mean other teams scouting reports, but on a consistent basis we have missed what other teams have seen. So I'm speaking more figuratively. I know hindsight is not good but after so many years, there has to be some cause for question? I just can't help it it seems like the problem is with us.

Someone mentioned the "character" trait that Lou looks for. At what point do we say enough is enough with the character stuff, because we've also had a lot of these character guys walk out on us lol Does this mean Elias, Stevens, Daneyko, and Brodeur are the only good character guys we've gotten.

sorry for hijacking the Larsson thread I'll move over to offseason thread. who's coming lol

That wasn't what was being sold. Ryan Murphy was being sold that way. If you watched a single game of the world juniors that year or read one scouting report it was evident that he wasn't a dynamic offensive defenseman, but a strong two-way, positionally sound pmd.

I strongly disagree with you that his O ability wasnt being sold....I just went back and read the scouting reports on him and the majority of them tout his offensive ability and scarily his skating which IMO is holding his entire game back. . Here is one scouting report almost all of them are similar...As has become an annual tradition, the best defenseman coming out of Sweden must be compared at some level to Nicklas Lidstrom. Perhaps the most telling compliment to Adam Larsson’s versatility is that International Scouting Services has him listed as one of their best offensive defenseman and one of the best shutdown defenseman.....

So yes he was being sold as a solid two way but also as a very very good Offensive D man. I think he could be come the latter but I have seen nothing to make me think he will be anything but a 30 pt max D man and thats not what we were lead to believe AL would be.

You can always cherry pick players we should have picked like Carlson over Teddy(MT was ranked ahead of Karlsson in that draft) but its amazing how few players make a significant impact after the mid second round. Truly is a crap shoot

Plus take a look at just about 'any' good team similar to us (i.e. mostly mid-high picks) Pittsburgh, San Jose, Vancouver, even Detroit...not a lot of NHL'ers from their last several drafts either.

Detroit's drafting makes us look peewee.

Of course the last 4 years won't yield much yet, the kids aren't even out of their minor leagues yet. Although I'm ok debating if its drafting or developing cause we're slacking somewhere since 2000.

See, this is one of the things I don't like about the new NHL. If a guy doesn't make an impact at 20, he's a bust. People see guys like Stamkos, Tavares, and Kane and want the gratification of prospects immediately producing at the NHL level.

Those guys are the exception, not the norm. Most prospects don't become NHL regulars until around 22 or 23.

I've said for awihle now that our drafting has not been good at all recently.

That's probably an understatement. Look at out drafts since the late 90's and early 2000's. Yea we were picking late in the first back then but that's not much of an excuse to fail. We've been a little better over the past 5 years or so but not much. Henrique and Fayne are about the only impact players. The rest of the prospects are to be determined. With the exception of Parise, Zajac, and Greene our drafts in the mid 2000's were pretty putrid.

Yea I don't know if it's the actual players we drafted or the we way developed them but something wasn't right about a decade or so ago. We've gotten a little better at it but certainly nothing to brag about. Personally, I'm not a huge fan of Conte.

Corrente, Vrana, Tallackson, Ryznar, Pihlman, Bergfors... Conte was killin it back then

Add Suglobov, and Berglund.

Or one of my personal favorites from 01.
