I feel like Makar is going to win the award most years moving forward, so this is Fox’s big opportunity. The only reason Makar isn’t the surefire thing is he got hurt. Makar may still win anyway. If Fox doesn’t win this year, he may not have another chance for a while.

I still don't think Makar wins it even if he wasn't hurt. Hedman had it at the 2 week mark this season in the bag. But totally agree that Makar is going to be the next "default". If Fox remains as good as he was this year, he may win when he's close to 30, Makar has a down year, and it will NOT be Fox's statistically best season.

People vastly overestimate how much the individual awards actually amount to in contract negotiations.

Considering he forced his way on to the Rangers I think that gives us some leverage knowing he wants to play here and only here. He’d want nothing more in life than to win a cup as a Ranger too, I think out of anybody he’d be the most willing to take a hometown discount
