we can't play him .. who are you taking out in this line up ?
Even if you take out Matheson and Savard he doesn't have room
Hutson-Ghule
Matheson-Savard
Wifi-Reinbacher
Struble-Mailloux
Barron, Bogdan
Matheson Savard will be gone.

Smooth as silk and a quick learner. He played on the right side a few times in preseason. I'd love to see him called up. I bet he fits right in .

There is a surplus of LD for sure that's why I see Struble and Matheson on the outs sooner rather than later.
Matheson would have been trade bait if Reinbacher showed Guhle level D awareness this season.
That's probably a year out at the very least and still with plenty of question marks surrounding it.
Hughes has to operate like we need a top RD to step in immediately just like he needs to fill the 2C position.

I can see him replacing what Matheson brings to that right side in a few years. He's definitely one of our kids who has played a decent amount of RD in the past. With Savard we need a likeness someone who can block shots play PK and lower the boom as a partner with Xhekaj. We have so many interesting pieces it's now a question of finding the best fit for some of them.

Already mentioned before that Engstrom is who we thought Norlinder would be. Norlinder's best season in Laval was 19 pts in 67 GP. With his OT winner the other day, Engstrom matched Norlinder's 19 pts, but he's done it in 37 GP.
That's pretty fair, there are definitely some parallels between the two, outside of being from the same country. We got to see both sides of the coin in regards to adapting to NA hockey, one managed a pretty smooth transition and the other one just couldn't do it. Engstrom still has a lot of room to grow too, he has yet to show some of his offensive flair with the puck the way he regularly did with Rogle. He can still be a lot better.

Engstrom is a case of great development that we are not rushing. He's on the Heineman track

Savard will be 35 next season. He's already struggling to keep pace. Maybe he has one more season in him but i would not bet on it. Wont be surprised any bit if Savard hits another major wall next year. It's crazy that people still think all players can play and remain effective until 40. I like Savard but he's very very very close to the end. Matheson is a very similar player to Petry and should age similarly to Petry. At 33 years old Petry was a cap dump. Matheson will be 31 next season.

Norlinder was evaluated for his skating and skill. Engstrom is more defensively sound and building his confidence from the back end out (not the other way around). Hutson types are anomalies.

Hockey IQ and will power to overcome the challenges (hunger to improve) is the best development ingredient. The other layer is building a strong pool so they can grow together. Something a guy like Nemec does not have right now. He's on a horrible AHL team and I feel for the kid

If he's on Heineman track then he should be in the NHL next season.

Heineman is 23, has 59 games of AHL exp and 127 games of AHL exp
Next season Engstrom will be 23, will have 70ish games of AHL exp and 95 games of SHL exp

I agree with Savard. The game speed is passing him and his savvy vet experience can only do so much.

Matheson is an elite level skater. Petry was a good skater. I think Matheson ages better than Petry. It's hard to compare Matheson to others because his skating is so good. We will cry and whine when we don't have his puck moving anymore. I'd easily extend Matheson to age 35 if he was open to a team friendly deal.

The good news is we will find out way more information for the rest of this season and next season (Matheson's term left). Engstrom, Mailloux, Struble, Xhekaj, Reinbacher, BK.

Why do people compare players will different junior stats just because they are similar players? Like people who compare Hutson with Mete? Norlinder'S best season in the AHL is 10 points -9 as a 20 years old. Engstrom's best season in the SHL is 22 points -10 as a 19 years old. Engstrom did not play in first division. He went from junior to the SHL. Norlinder playerd 48 games in 1st division (equivalent of AHL) over two years. Norlinder'S best seaosn in the AHL is 19 points -7 as a 22 years old. Engstrom best season in the AHL will be probably around 30 points and +15ish (projection) as a 22 years old.

Norlinder was never that great of a prospect. He was an interesting suspect but that's about it. Engstrom is a legit good quality prospect.
