Just seems strange to hold the auction now unless playoff teams see him as an add. I can't see contenders spending deadline assets on someone that might not be in their lineup. Makes more sense to wait for the off-season before his contract is up no?

Playoff teams may see him as an add, or non-contenders/bubble teams/everyone else might see him as a 22 year old that they'll have the rights to for 5 years and can integrate into their core.

Considering the Wild lose his rights in a few months, it's not weird at all for them to try to get something out of it.

And for the teams willing to pay for him, it's because they know he'll sign with them if they acquire him, and they don't have to try to compete with several other teams who would also want to sign him (and he wants to sign with them).

Usually RFA deals like this are in the early off-season unless it's a contender trading the RFA as part of a package for a rental, seems strange to cut off half the market by doing it at the deadline unless the Wild use him to bring in a rental instead of a pick.

Could use him to bring in a couple picks or a pick to trade for a rental.

Example, MTL trades 2x3 rounders for him, Minny turns around and flips those 2 3rds for another piece

They lose his rights this summer. As in, he walks for nothing. How is it weird that the Wild are doing this now? This is the ONLY time they can do it.

Other teams do it because he can play this season.

The draft is another time, but getting an asset now could help them in making a trade at the deadline.

They lose his rights weeks after the season ends, there's plenty of time to make a deal with the whole league.
