I'd like to sign Mangiapane in the offseason. He's an excellent forechecker, strong defensively, a natural goalscorer, and has always been very productive 5on5.
I've always been a fan of Mangiapane. He's low key one of the best defensive wingers in the game. He's an excellent possession player too. That said, a natural goal scorer he is not. It's a toss up between him and Backlund on who was the guy who generates the most without scoring.

marner. i'd love to see it and i bet they'd do well.

They'd be great as 2 very high-end skill guys but they're 2 premium playmakers, need a finisher.

Problem for Ottawa is both lines (Norris and Stutzle) need to have Tkachuk and Batherson. Giroux is a legend but he turns 37 y/o in 2 weeks. Perron is also getting older and injured anyway. They miss a clear top-6 forward that would balance the top 2 lines

And that hole was created by Dorion with the DeBrincat acquisition. Staios did all he could to fix that situation (and the Korpisalo contract at the same time) but it's Linus Ullmark they ended up with in the end, not a forward.

Stutzle is a very skilled player, with a terrific all-around set of tools for offensive play.

He has burst acceleration, tight turns, excellent stick handling, sublime vision, heavy shot, and he’s not afraid to muck it up behind the net or along the boards. Now that he’s stronger and bigger, he’s throwing more hits the way he used to do in Junior.

But if there’s something about his play that uniquely stands out, it is his ability to maintain possession in tight quarters, such as near the blueline, and evade pursuit long enough to draw more and more opposing players to him.

He can almost mesmerize the opposition into chasing after him, opening up a lot of ice for his linemates.

At that point, he will find an open player with a pass for a very high quality scoring chance.

The ideal winger for Stutzle doesn’t have to be fast, but has to have the hockey IQ to go to the right places and be ready for the inevitable opportunity that Stutzle will deliver.

Anticipation and a shot with a quick release would be ideal.

Sometimes his wingers won’t expect the pass because he is creating offensive opportunities out of seemingly nothing, and they flub the shot or fail at receiving his hard passes cleanly.

Stutzle has the skill to maintain possession long enough for players to get into the zone and occupy quality positions around the net or as high trailers coming into the zone, so again, they don’t have to be speedsters, they just have to be smart and comfortable playing without the puck, ready to pounce when called upon.

Physical play would be nice but is not mandatory.

Pay Rantanen a bujillion dollars a year in FA next offseason. Problem solved.

Damn I wish

?????? - Stutzle - Rantanen
Tkachuk - Norris - Batherson
Greig - Pinto - Giroux
Reinhardt - Ostapchuk - ??????

But for that to happen, would need to re-sign Giroux for less han his current 6.5 AAV and to get rid of Perron (4.0 AAV) and Amadio (2.6 AAV) cap hits and you'd still need to find another winger for cheap who could play on that top line. I don't think they could afford to give Rantanen more than 11.0 AAV

Rantanen is literally perfect but the Senators don't have the cap space/assets needed.

I like the Rakell suggestion as (very) discount version as well. Him and Giroux would insulate Stu properly and the $ is manageable for a team (kind of) up against the cap.

What about Patrick Kane and Alex Lyon (retention on one of them if needed) for Anton Forsberg and pick(s)/prospect(s)?

Lyon is a lot cheaper than Forsberg and expires in the summer just like Forsberg. Between the savings from the goalie swap and possible retention on Kane (or Lyon), the cap could probably work.

If the Sens had a year or two of playoff experience I’d say we should go try to pickup Hall with some retention as I think he’d work cap wise and be a solid option as a shooter for Stu to dish to. He’s only got one year left, he’ll likely do better on a not bottom of the league team, and he can probably be had for relatively cheap right now.

That being said I’m still not 100% sure the boys have it in them to make the playoffs and until then our picks should be used on prospects because the pool is looking pretty barren at the moment.

The team should try to acquire a winger in the offseason instead.

Boeser would be a nice fit if Vancouver decides to punt on the season and go a different direction
