I would guess most "good" PBP people started calling games a lot earlier than on a whim in 2018.

She could be very good at her job if she started in the minors for 10+ years, but we'll sadly never know.

That's right up there with Doc Emmerick's "Driiiiiive!!!" and Pierre's "Double Dion". Leah has finally made it.
I prefer “WAHFFLEBOARDED” lol.

I don’t mind commentators having their signature vocabulary really.

There’s plenty of bigger more impactful things around the games people complain about, but some hockey fans get super nitpicky

I just don’t get how she could have got hired when she has had zero experience with PbP prior to gettig a job calling games at the highest level possible - NHL……..

Its insane and I cannot think of anyone I know that was handed a job while being grossly incompetent.
She is horrible…. And the doubled up on her by bringing her back this season? If they wanted her to continue with PNP calling , then have her practice somewhere else. Like everyone else in the business.

And apparently some people didn't understand it yesterday, but thanks for your input.
Watching the game with no sound isn’t much better if at all. Auditory and visual stimulation go hand in hand, like how feeding on crowd noise is a big part of why watching in person is so great (similar to the science behind why laugh tracks trick us into laughing at unfunny non-jokes)

Could say the best commentators in a sense channel or translate some of that energy through the TV when you’re watching at home by yourself

Not to mention the puck and other sounds. Watching the game without sound feels awkward

Would be nice if there were alternate streams more readily available, but it seems she’s gonna keep being the only option for some of us trying to watch a number of west coast matchups.

Do I think she’s good? No. Did she make a mistake? Yes. Does it matter? Not really.

I’m a Ducks fan and didn’t even notice what she said during the shootout. Who really cares. It’s not like she’s going to be doing high stakes playoff games. So what you gotta listen to her a few times in the regular season.

She probably makes less mistakes and takes her job more seriously then 95% of the people in the thread bashing her.
As a big fan of Doris Burke, AJ, and of course the great Sherry Ross, she sucks. And even she admits she isn't qualified. I will say the amount of hate she's getting is over the top. Listening to her speech was awful, and there is no doubt she's getting that hate because she's a woman.

I also believe people who don't like her commentary should just mute the tv and miss every other sound about the game. It's only going to be what, millions of people worldwide? This is a reasonable opinion because she is a woman right? That seems like the course to take over finding someone else (ANY GENDER) more qualified.

“Stolarz with a ‘lil fist pump” is simultaneously the worst, but also the most unintentionally hilarious call I have ever heard in sports.

Its understandable, but annoying, that anybody criticizing her has to first provide a disclaimer that they are not sexist.
More annoying, yet understandable based on societal views these days, that anyone criticizing her is deemed to be considered sexist simply because she's a woman, and not the fact that she just may not be good at her job. :dunno:

She's getting over the top hate because people don't like blatant nepotism and they especially don't like blatant nepotism disguised as moral posturing.

If her name was Leah Smith she most likely wouldn't have this job. If her name was John Smith she 100% wouldn't have it.

Nepotism happens everywhere in hockey lol. They call it the good old boys club for a reason. But you don't see Jack Edwards getting death threats

if you are using her as an example of nepotism in hockey...thats a strange hill to die on, since almost everyone working in a job in involved with the game of hockey got it through some sort of nepotism or old boys club networking.

Not that he’s told us. There’s also not a national level (sports) conversation around him because he’s local, avoidable, and gets hate for different reasons than her.

He’s bias as a local guy which is typical. He’s biased for a big market team lots of people hate, and the Boston accent doesn’t help perception probably.

He gets tons of hate for a local guy (pretty consistently spread throughout the year), but his voice is fine and he mostly does good calls. He’s just a jackass. He might actually get threats lol

It does help to read someone's post entirely before responding to them, or at least take the entire post into account when formulating an answer.

Hire someone incompetent based on nepotism -> people get frustrated (see Jack Edwards, the guy does get his fair share of shit thrown at him).

Hire someone incompetent based on nepotism, then tell the people complaining that they're only complaining because they're moral bigots -> people get irrationally frustrated.

People already know that nepotism is rampant and they're already mad because of it. When the nepotists also try to pass for holier than the plebs complaining that's when the shit hits the fan of you ask me.
