Hopefully they'll do the decently respectable thing and just throw the games for these two leftover teams, leaving the remaining field of 6 real teams. I imagine that's when people will actually start watching and paying attention. Still stupid that some teams will be deprived of potential starters because of the YoungStars team...that's just absolute nonsense.

The hosts were such gutless collaborators.

"I'm really excited about the under-23 team! It'll be like a fantasy draft."

Ugh...

Sorry, it was probably already answered, but why do Team Europe players have to participate in this?

It is a part of their NHL contract?

I watched this, and regret doing so. Absolutely cringe worthy questions being asked on the stage.

It was telling that many Canadian players were asked, "how does it feel," and many of the players answered that there is "no better feeling than wearing your country's colours and representing your country." Meanwhile, Anze Kopitar and Zdeno Chara and the rest of the European countries not worthy of being there look on. What an insult.

I wonder how they feel about the thrill of not representing your country, but instead representing a frankenstein team that could potentially compete against your own country?

What would happen if a player declines, if he permitted?

In the previous tournaments players were able to opt out if they wanted. Bourque did so two times.

As a fan of hockey, I am genuinely embarrassed that this will actually happen. Just the thought of having to explain to someone why does an international tournament of hockey have the teams North American Young Stars and European Leftovers competing.

It is an NHL and NHLPA production...and all revenues go into HRR, thus the NHL players benefit getting their 50% share... even the ones who do not play in it.

and for the record I hate this format and I will not watch a second of it. but I will have fun ridiculing it for the next year.

I think this tournament will be a big fail. If USA wins then Can will say well if we had a player or two from our young stars team, basically all true patriotic passion that drives these tournaments is lost. Waste of time, player injuries etc. Big money grab, destined to fall on its face.

Quick scan through all the countries participating and coverage in those countries, slim to none.

Twitter reaction, on official nhl feed and journalists all say

''nothing but a joke''.

Reading here and other forums, majority saying, ''good luck,we're not watching.''

:laugh::laugh::laugh:

I hope the nhl is the laughing stock of the american sporting world come september 2016. It's already laughed at ridiciulously internationally, I can't imagine how funny it'll be when your own consumers laugh at the product you try to sell. And for goodness sakes it'll be the one and only time this tournament is held. Cancel it all together, there's nothing wrong with International Hockey, it's wonderful as is.

heh, I'm saving posts like this.

You should save it, and then bring it back up when this tournament will attract miniscule numbers in Canada itself. Let alone the failure it's alredady going to be all across Europe and the World.

I'm sure the nhl will be happy to attract viewers in las vegas and seattle and other american newbies though, since the league's primary vision is just to attract more americans to the game and and grow it there and nothing more, the same people who as the league says will complain when the players go to the Olympics because they've never heard of Olympic Hockey before and can't wake up in the middle of hte night because it's too much of sacrifice.

The Olympic Hockey final attracts more then 200 million viewers Worldwide. Just think of that number

200

TWO HUNDRED MILLION.

Do you think in Canada alone this cash grab will attract more then 50% of the country?

No chance.

it's quite unfair to compare the olympics with any kind of a hockey world cup. And I don't think the viewing would be any much different without the all star teams. Actually, they might get more viewers due to a high number of NHL elite players and uniqueness of the tournament.

Okay the U23 is an abomination against humanity and Team Europe is a terrible crime against international sports BUT....

I really like the change from recent Olympics and World Cups that only the top two teams advance and I love the best of three final.

People are being way too negative about this.... I will watch and cheer.

anyone who has been concerned about the KHL and the World Cup....this is official:

Will Kontinental Hockey League players participate in the World Cup?

Yes, according to NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly, which is good news for Team Russia fans who might have been concerned that the KHL regular season would impact the eligibility for players such as Ilya Kovalchuk and Alexander Radulov. The KHL season in Russia starts in late August, meaning by the time the World Cup begins it will be roughly three weeks old already. But the expectation is that one or more KHL players will represent Russia in the World Cup.

The bigger question is how many. Nine players from the KHL, including Kovalchuk and Radulov, represented Russia in Sochi. Similarly, Russia had nine KHL players on its Olympic team in Vancouver in 2010. Russia didn't make it past the quarterfinals in either tournament, and there is a valid argument to be made that it was because the chemistry was lacking between the NHL and KHL players.

As organizing world cup obviously has some influence on potential NHL players participating on Olympics it's very fair to compare these events in all aspects. Especially after so many posts here considering SOCHI hockey as a boring one...

It's quite fair. In some sports the World Cup is a bigger event than the Olympics, and the Canada/World Cup has had the world's best players longer than the Olympics has. The World Cup could easily become a better event than the Olympics, just by virtue of removing the IOC from the picture and always having the tournament in a place where there are hockey fans, but they are continually blowing it.

And I don't think the viewing would be any much different without the all star teams. Actually, they might get more viewers due to a high number of NHL elite players and uniqueness of the tournament.

Once again, I am amazed that some people actually buy into the crap the NHL puts out. Other than Anze Kopitar, what elite player will make this tournament that wouldn't otherwise? Are people going to turn out in extra numbers because of mass Kopitar fandom? Who in their right mind would tune in just to see the Young Gunz, but wouldn't otherwise watch? No on.

Additionally, even if this tournament did attract the same or a greater number of viewers, it wouldn't mitigate the damage done by having gimmick teams in what is supposed to be a best on best international tournament.

Okay the U23 is an abomination against humanity and Team Europe is a terrible crime against international sports BUT....

The best of three final is good, and shows one example how this tournament can be "unique" without resorting to cheap gimmicks.

Only Canada, USA and Sweden can produce a roster using only NHLers, while Finland, Czech and Russia will all need to dip into Euro leagues.

What guarantee is there that all foreign leagues will cooperate with this sham?

If they're smart they'll extract NHL participation at the Olympics as compensation.

Personally dont like the best-of-three, as it kinda ruins the whole country/world getting together for one glorious couple hours of watching.

I mean, who was really dying to see Canada-Sweden 1-2 more times? Teams actually have a better chance of beating Canada in 1 game so the suspense is a little better to me.

I mean, I just think it was more potential for dud finals personally than not.
